There might be AMD chips in your next Xbox photo

The word is that AMD has struck a deal with Microsoft to put their chips in the next Xbox product. In a way, your current Xbox, the Xbox 360, has AMD chips in it, as the company merged with graphics chip company ATI awhile back. It seems that Microsoft liked the 360's GPU so much that they were happy to work with ATI again.

Oh, and there's supposedly backwards compatibility built in these new ATI chips. That'll be nice, won't it?

So when's this new Xbox coming? The rumor is 2012, so let's hope your 360 keeps on ticking.  Hey, I've got a related question on the new Xbox: WHO IS WORKING ON THE COOLING AND RELIABILITY?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new xbox is incredibly solid and takes a hell of a lot to break. MS must want to get as far away from the area of 50% failure rates as they can.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new xbox was just as bad with fail rates as the old one. Microsoft will completely forget about reliability in their rush to release their new system first again

So Microsoft and Nintendo might be coming out with their new systems first and Sony is just getting warmed up on their PS3. I wonder how things will roll out.

Haha, I think MS will be out of the console business if they don't get it right this time. I just hope it won't come out until the end of 2012, I'm just not ready for a new investment.

I hope it comes in 2012 or ever before then... no offense at all to console games, but ports of them are looking ancient on the PC at this point. A new generation will kick things back into overdrive again and we can start seeing some new, amazing looking worlds.

Unless of course they go the Wii route... which would suck.

I feel this gen is just getting started. Theres hardly any RPGs out compared to last gen and considering the price of development, there sure isn't a lot of risky games.

2012 sounds about right. This generation of consoles has much longer legs than previous ones. Backwards compatibility is crucial, though. I don't want to worry about playing my Xbox 360 years down the road and having it crap out, only to be stuck buying a used machine that I have no idea how close to dying it is.

@Scroll way better, original Xbox was only 2001 - 2005, so this will give the 360 a 7 year lifespan compared to a paltry 4.

So it has begun. This is very exciting, but I don't care about the 720 at all past the mild interest I have in seeing consoles leap ahead of PCs again. I'm much more interested in the DS2. Playing 358/2 right now, and I can't stop thinking about what the game would be like on a more powerful handheld.

Well if MS can slap in their new console one of the intel i7 chips then they would have as much power as the PS3. Now my worries is were are they going to cut corners...

Are you joking or being serious? I can't tell. Do you really think the 360 was ever more powerful then a PC could be? Come on man.

Please back up your statement on how they'll be out of the console business when they seem to be doing just fine.

I really hope it is backwards compatible. I'm also pretty sure it'll have Blu-Ray. Who knows, maybe by 2012 we'll have Live for free! I can dream, can't I?
I also am excited to see what the new red-ring will be. VERY excited. Or maybe they'll be like Playstation when they moved from their 2nd to 3rd console...they'll fix all the nasty problems (my PS2 has broken more then my Xbox 360 has, for the record).

I'm not ready for another gen, this one just barely took off so I would hold off on buying the new one( not to mention when ms rushes their products out to beat the competition, the RROD tends to happen, and since everyone went on. Buying 360s anyway there is really no incentive for them to change their policy)

Also I'm interested in seeing how thwy handle their format problem, were about to get rid of dvd and it seems MS is still allergic to blu-ray.

@ Shadowiii,

Ouch.. I'm still using my PS2 from late 2001. Granted, it suddenly seems as if it's stopped playing DVD movies for some reason, which is odd. But, other then that it still works great.

@runtheplacered

Yeah...I got the common "disc read errors" for a while on my PS2Fat, but I managed to figure out how to fix them for the most part. That worked great (just had to open the PS2 every few months and mess with the laser) until the disc drive died completely.
Second ps2 did the same thing, this time I couldn't fix it again.
I'm on a PS2-Slim now I've had for about three years, but the damn thing loads freaking slow and won't play DVD movies anymore.
Compare that to my Xbox, which I've had for about a year and a half, and it's never broken, even with near-constant playing.
Go figure.

Shadowiii:
I'm talking about the generation after the one that has yet to come, obviously I'm speculating. With the luck of having a great software collection, reforming its customer support and the fact that the first Xbox was solid, when it came to reliability, MS has managed to avoid a lot of bad PR. However, if the next one is just as unreliable, the X360 will stand as a precedent, not only legally but psychologically to a lot of customers.

I should have mentioned too that having Windows 7 and the Zune as a reference, I doubt MS will commit the same mistake.

I think the usual five year gap wouldn't work for this generation, especially considering how much more it costs for everyone that's a part of it. 2012 doesn't look bad for the next generation of consoles to start, especially considering how the original Xbox barely had a chance to get it's feet wet before Microsoft decided it had enough.

Too bad the world will end during that year on December 21, because there's undeniable proof backed up by top scientists around the world to prove this and not just what some ancient people thought. There had better be great launch games to tie us over before we all die, instead of the usual "get good games later on during the console's life span".

I wouldn't be suprised if it comes with a blu-ray drive and no hd capabilities. Besides since they've dropped the HD requirement most of those games look like bad PS2 games on big screens.

there are so many SKUs out right now, sony and microsoft should BOTH be ashamed. nintendo is the only company that seems to have understood. they released ONE sku, and have stuck by it. I'll buy and xbox360 when they get around to actually finish designing the console that they duct-taped together 3-4 years ago.

Well if anythign we have learned from the XBOX & 360 generations....Microsoft actually listens to its customers and delivers on its promises. As long as they continue to focus on the content & games and not the frilly doodads (cough...SONY)....they will do fine.

I know I will be inline day 1 to purchase whatever they come out with......but then again I am there day 1 for all systems.

I seriously doubt Blu-ray will happen in any consoles other than Sony's offerings... The format was actually created by Sony, wasn't it? They wouldn't let their competitors utilize it like that.

In addition to no doubt winning some sort of bid war, I think it would be in Microsoft's best interest to keep the same general GPU architecture in the next xbox for the sake of backward compatibility, and the most affordable way to do that is probably to get the CPU and GPU from one place. Hell, maybe they'll be integrated together. As long as they get rid of the Fisher Price Experience I'd be happy to buy one.

@Pedrovay2003: Actually. Blu-ray was created by a consortium of various companies INCLUDING sony. Not to mention, why wouldnt they license it? That means sony makes a profit off every ps3/4 and every xboxwhatevernumber

Its a win/win for them.

While the blu ray association consists of a a lot of companies now I believe the founding fathers of blu ray are phillips and sony and everyone else were just partners that joined up along the way if memory serves me correctly. Its safe to say sony has a heavy say in what happens concerning the product.

Thers also another issue in that MS (and toshiba)was offered a chance to settle the whole blu ray HD dvd and turned it down, so if they do want blu ray now it seems they would have to clear some bad blood first(that's not exactly something MS is know for).

Sony wasn't the only company they pissed off when they did that,A lot companies had to burn money fighting that HD svs blu ray fight and thanks to the recession I doubt they made it back. So as far as the blue ray association is concerned they might have more enemies than freinds there.

But I do think sony would license blu ray to MS, they would just get the short end of the stick as far as royalties are concerned.Somthing that's pretty bad for MS because if they get shorted to much they will end up fueling a lot of their rivals productions, damn near ensuring sony would have superiority any way you slice it.MS made their console to have influence in the gaming world, not give it to another company.

So blu ray sounds like the obvious option but don't be surprised if MS's new machine is download only or still using DVDs,cause the blu ray path is inaccesable to them at the moment and the toll might be to high a price for them to pay.

And the kessin of the day: don't burn bridges you have to use.
