THE Xbox LIVE system update hitting November 17th photo

THE big Xbox LIVE System Update is dropping on November 17th according to Web site Fast Company, who reportedly received launch confirmation from LIVE general manager Marc Whitten.

This is the update that adds Twitter, Facebook, and Last.FM support to the service -- its not one of those prep patches that keeps you from playing Dragon Age: Origins or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for a precious fifteen minutes.

As you’ve seen in our video preview of the update (or yourself if you’re one of the lucky ones in the beta) the update doesn’t allow Tweets or FB messages on the fly; rather, users have to jump into an application which makes this the second most pointless thing ever. The first most pointless thing, by the way, is my autographed portrait of Dennis Rodman.*

* Just joking, Dennis. Keep being as bad as you want to be. Just, you know, stop with the drunken antics please.

Is this the one kicking off all the unauthorized cards?

The Last.fm feature is the only really nice thing about this. Im tired of this facebook and twitter nonsense. How long can you listen to people who have nothing to say?

Am I the only one who notices that major updates occur on launch days of "Left 4 Dead" games. Last year was the major overhaul of the dashboard on the day of the first "Left 4 Dead". This years new additions will be on "Left 4 Dead 2" launch. Conspiracy I say.

L4D2 and MW2 > Twitter and Facebook. I concur with Trinkwasser on this one.

I hope this is the update that will make my 360 feel like a game console again instead of a mii-wanabe, buy our latest crap, advertisement machine.

UGH. . . if you have to jump in the application then it's useless. LAME. Will you be able to listen to Last.FM while gaming? Or do you have to be in the application for that too?

@ JLanphear,

Yes, you'll have to access the Last.FM application in order to listen. No cross-functionality with games.

What is last.fm and why should I care about any of this? I bought an xbox to play xbox games, not fucking tweet and facebook. /oldmanfrown

So, what, I have to launch all these from my game library like Waypoint?

That really kills the point. Not that I ever cared much in the first place.

@ElectroZack

It feels like an xbox 360 when you set it to boot to disc, and then never quit to dashboard.

Occams electric toothbrush has the right idea, and an amusing handle. I can honestly say that the Facebook functionality sucks. This is only good if you want to treat the xbox 360 like the kind of family media hub thing like in their crappy Natal adverts.

If you want a console to be a family media hub, a simple one to use, get a PS3 or set up a computer to do it, because the xbox 360 is best at playing games.

Yeah, doesn't having a separate application kind of stop it being the easy access device they were hoping for? It's not as if you can have fb in the background as you play games, like you could on PC. Seems a bit misguided. Or lazy.

Darn, now I can't act like a pretentious ass to my friends who didn't get in the beta.
