The Xbox Exodus: How the PS3 could become a promised land photo

As Xbox Live continues being a disaster, providing headaches for gamers everywhere, tension is running high. A trip to the Xbox.com forums shows gamers with pitchforks and torches, storming the company's virtual castle and demanding satisfaction for their stressful gaming experiences. As people becme increasingly frustrated with Microsoft's XBL problems and shoddy hardware, all that Microsoft can do is shrug its shoulders and say "we know, we're great."

Why should it do more than that, though? It's not like these angry customers are cancelling their subscriptions in droves and going over to Sony. The Xbox 360 currently has very little to fear in terms of customer retaliation because it's still the best thing on the menu, despite leaving a bitter taste.

What if, however, something more palatable finally arrived? What if Sony cooked us a meal so delicious, it took away the aftertaste of yet another Red Ring of Death mixed in with another session of Halo 3 that saw you get booted halfway through? What if we stopped all these food metaphors? After the jump, I explain how we could one day see an "Xbox Exodus," a time when people finally have an opportunity to go elsewhere and a day when a true rival emerges.

It is safe to say that the Xbox 360, despite becoming the console of choice for core gamers, having the highest software attach rate of the current generation, and generally being a decent piece of kit, has had its fair share of problems. In fact if we're being honest, the issues that gamers have had with this system have been abysmal. Between shocking hardware failures, bad customer service and a multitude of concerns over Microsoft's crown jewel, Xbox Live, it can sometimes feel like gaming with the 360 is tantamount to very hard, very stressful work.

I had a PS2, and even though there were tales of its hardware failures, I never experienced a problem and it still runs after all these years in my brother's house. I've owned GameCubes, Megadrives, all manner of systems, and never once have I had a problem -- until I bought an Xbox 360. First I managed to buy a (brand new) console that had been flagged for banning on Live, then I bought two in succession that had disc read errors. Even without hardware problems, I've had issues with shoddy customer service, bad discs and the recent Xbox Live faiure that has made a multitude of players very angry indeed. This is my fourth console ... and that makes me one of the lucky ones.

Yet for all the problems, we keep going back to Microsoft like battered wives, and why? Most consumers would have given up after the first broken console, let alone the fourth, the sixth, or even the eighth. The answer of course, is simple. While most consumers would indeed switch loyalties to the competition, Microsoft HAS no competition. As I read complaint after complaint from enraged gamers who couldn't enjoy a crippled Xbox Live during the holidays, one running theme was found in their complaints -- If the PS3 provided everything the 360 did, these people would have given up on Microsoft by now.

That led me to a very interesting thought -- when/if Sony finally gets its act together and the PlayStation 3 starts proving to be a significant rival, will we see a mass exodus as burned gamers move away from the 360 and return home to Sony?

Let's face it, if the PS3 were anything like the PS2, we'd all own one by now, without question. The PlayStation 2 was, and in many ways still is, the best console out there. Affordable, easy to use and with a huge library of games, it was always a wonderful machine, even with its faults. In many ways, it is the Xbox 360 that has essentially become the new PlayStation 2. Where the 360 differs, however, is in the sheer amount of headaches it can cause for gamers, people who by now have expected technology (especially technology costing hundreds of dollars) to make their lives more convenient, not provide hindrance and anguish.

However, it's a pain we must endure, because for all its faults, the Xbox 360 is the only complete package right now. Providing a wide plethora of games, an as-yet unmatched online console service, and pure accessibility, it's a simple fact that the 360 has what the core gamer wants. Both the PS3 and the Wii are fine machines in their own respective ways, but they currently lack the kind of pure gaming potential that we crave. The software attach rates alone show this.

But what if the PlayStation 3 started to give the majority of gamers what they wanted? A solid core of first party exclusives flanked by third party titles that looked better and played better, a PlayStation Network that was as lively and had the same type of killer multiplayer titles as Xbox Live, and a price point that most consumers found acceptable. With both the extra technical power and the comparatively robust, more trustworthy hardware behind it, would you be tempted to give Microsoft the finger and return to the Sony camp you once so lovingly danced in?

The PlayStation 3 needs to do three things (all no-brainers) in order to become a viable alternative choice: It needs to be less expensive, it needs a bigger game library and it needs a PlayStation Network that can match Xbox Live. The first speaks for itself and will come with time. As for the second, this is another issue that will hopefully be resolved as the months pass. This year sees at least one important release for Sony's console -- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Whether this will remain exclusive or not, for the moment it is officially only going to be available on the PS3 and that is going to give the machine some leverage in 2008. One big title simply isn't enough however, and MGS is no mainstream system pusher like Halo 3, as much as I prefer MGS. Those waiting for a huge library of killer titles from Sony are going to just have to be patient.

As for the PlayStation Network, this is where things could get interesting. Right now, those who argue that the PSN is already superior do so on one major point -- it's free. While this is true, millions still pay for Xbox Live, and it's simply because Xbox Live offers more for the money. You can play more games and you have more people to play against. The PS3 has very little in comparison, and this is why it's free -- it's simply not a service worth exchanging money for. However, should it improve, Sony will charge for it. Those gamers currently showing off that the PSN is free will have to swallow a bitter pill if and when the service finally becomes worth paying for. If you believe that Sony won't charge for something that people would willingly buy, then you are very naive.

But the question is this: Will the PlayStation Network ever be worth money? Right now, it simply is not and Sony knows this because it's not charging. Furthermore, it does seem that western companies make more strides in online console gaming than Japanese ones. Nintendo took years to adapt to the idea of online games, as the Wii makes baby steps, and Sony's consoles have never had a strong presence on the Internet. In contrast, western console developers are the frontrunners in online gaming -- Rainbow Six, Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty -- all western.

However, the advent of Home and Metal Gear Online should go some ways to bridging the gap, and from there, it just needs some good developers to back the service even more. The PSN has all the tools to make it, provided the people behind the wheel are paying attention and keeping their hands on the wheel. If Sony makes the PlayStation Network into a service that people value and will break out their credit cards for, then I think it will be the sign that Sony has arrived to bite back at Microsoft.

Which leads me back to the question at hand. If the PS3 ticks the right boxes and the PlayStation Network becomes a worthy rival to Xbox Live, will people put down their 360 controllers and embrace Blu-ray en masse? It's hard to tell for sure, but right now I'm going to say there's a strong possibility that an exodus of sorts could happen. Right now, Microsoft doesn't have to do anything to provide an excellent service, because gamers have nowhere else to go. However, people are neither forgetting nor forgiving, and resentment toward Microsoft bubbles under the surface of many gamertags. It is, in fact, very possible that some customers are just waiting for the day that the PlayStation 3 becomes something they want. I certainly am waiting for such a day.

The trust and loyalty of gamers can be a weak currency, and it's one that Microsoft has been spending with wanton abandon. As it does so, however, Sony still lives, and this generation still has everything to play for. While Sony has faltered and floundered, its potential is unquestionable and its rise to power is still attainable. 2008 is said by some to the be the year that the true power of the console is revealed, while the Xbox 360 seems to have only flaws left to show us. For Microsoft, the clock is ticking, and while it may be impossible right now to predict where this generation will ultimately lead us, it's quite clear that the Xbox 360 has a lot of customers just waiting for another option, and a rival that has the means to provide that very rival.

To Jim,

This Blog made me sign up after viewing this site for a longtime. Jim your on the money with this one. I am one of those 1st 360 RRODs, happened 2 weeks after I bought the console returned it and waited 6 months after PS3 launch to grab a PS3.

I basically compare the original Xbox to the 360. Microsoft went from a quality console to cheap plastic junk. Since the 360 release the amount of problems with this console are outright unacceptable.

I look at many 360 forums filter out all the fanboy other console crap and compare them to the PS3 forums. The amount of failures and breaks on 360 forums are ten fold the PS3.

Jugger there is no excuse anymore, its been over 2 years now. I consider Microsoft is beyond a Multiple Class Action Lawsuit the PS2 had.

Working at a retail game store, I'm tired of broke DVD drives, RRODs and even the daily ringed games returned due to crappy hardware.

The saddest part is you people that decide to get a 3rd and beyond 360. I seriously wonder if it was possible out of the 360 sales the % of rebuys alone.

Broke once... acceptable. Broke 3x or more... drop it

My Wii... Quality piece of hardware
My PS3... Quality System and Blu-Ray player

as an adult with a job, I don't need to migrate. im going to become and stay a proud owner of all three "this-Gen" consoles

once PS3 is cheap enough. could i grow tired of any system and start to favor another? oh hell yeah. my Wii has become a damn paperweight

Interssting read Jim. The whole reason I like the PSN is the free part as spending 50-150 a year rubs me the wrong way, I don't play SCFPSMMORPGS due to the fact of the monthly subscription as they can pull the plug when they want, now the game is 100% useless.

My PS2 is a cockrach along side with my nes and snes!

I think the price of the PS3 now is decent for what it comes with, the lanuch price was very high mind you. The PS3 is now $399 (no backwards compatability) and that comes with Blu-Ray. Pick up a 360 with the HD-dvd add on and I guarantee you that it costs much more. $449 will get you the 60 gig with backwards combat so it's not a huge difference.

I was thinking about picking up a 360 on boxing day but I can't force myself to buy a system with huge issues (RROD), I wouldn't buy a faulty car or MP3 player so the same applies for a system. And I HATE sending things away back to the company as that's down time.

The 360 does have tons of games but only Halo really interests me at the moment and MS doesnt' have (or get) any decent RPG titles based on the histroy of the XBox and my 0 num,ber of titles being RPG. Plus I play the larger 360 titles on my PC.

I hear game developers are actually starting to like the PS3. Too Sony is coming out with the "Second-Life" like Home on PSN. PSN arcade games are superior to XBLA ones (90% of all XBLA games are just rehashed crap). Too the PS3 allows for a better cache of game data. Mass Effect suffered considerably for all the stupid constraints M$ put on Bioware.

The Ps3 will probably never overtake the 360, but unless Sony turns into a retarded monkey and doesn't do anything right, it will gain market appeal.

Blu-ray is not so much of a reason right now, but with time it will become the main advantage over the 360. Blu-ray is likely to win the HD format war, and with more and more people owning HD sets, Blu-ray capabilities will become very attractive.

As far as online, The release of Home, and Little Big Planet, along with updates to functionality, (The Official PSblog had a poll on what features people wanted not so long ago.) should beef up the PSN considerably.

@Bleep The format war is over. It would be very foolish of Microsoft to announce that they're including HD DVD drives in their SKUs. Warner Bros. has announced that they are exclusively going Blu Ray. Warner makes up almost 20% of all DVD sales. They will continue to produce HD DVD up until May, where they will stop all production and just make Blu Ray.

Overall the problem is not resolved. The 360 still has issues, cheap drives failing, XBL downtime, and more.

This issue won't be resolved until hard nosed 360 owners get out of la la land and realize their console is an unacceptable piece of electronics. As Microsoft just sits there and throws money at ways to avoid things. People rebuying 360s and pressing friends and others to buy the console = Microsoft sees no problems due to sales, so why change anything but throw a new Sku out there with the same issues(aka Arcade).

What if nothing. With all the problems 360 has had over the years, it's still light years ahead of that bloated paperweight the PS3. It's not fluke that Sony is coming last in this generation of console wars.

Spot on article. I like to see it this way, when the 360 works, it's a beautiful thing.

Offline, it has the best library of games. Online, it has the best service. Even with the outage it has the best service, because the outage isn't an ongoing problem, it's just a NOW problem.

PS3 can still win the console race by... beating Microsoft in the offline and online department. SURPISE! no not really. If the PS3 has the games factor like PS2 did, I'd be on it like a fat kid on cake. And Jim's right, the Japanese companies don't really get Online like North Americans do. IMO, Sony has to first deal with their offline problems before even approaching their online problems.

But the xbox can counter any sony strat by just making an improvement in their QA department. Think about it, If Sony started fixing their problems, what's to say Microsoft can't fix their own. Why would you leave Microsoft if it suddenly giving you what you want?

Exodus feels like the wrong choice of word. An exodus seems to imply that gamers would buy a PS3 and then triumphantly set their 360s on fire just to watch them burn. That skews close to the ridiculous notion: "I'm leaving the country if candidate X wins."

@SubOrbital First think outside the box of the "console war" trend. Bloated paperweight for hardware thats not in its prime, is an incorrect term and biased. Given the life of past Sony consoles and its support. The massive hole Microsoft is in with zero profit in this console division. Eventually stubborn people reach an end with the constant problems.

I don't consider even after a year the PS3 has been out. When titles on the scale of Gears of War and Halo 3 aren't out for PS3. Maybe after MGS4 and FFXIII type titles are released your comment based of its performance can be true.

Great article. There are several reasons I do not own a 360 and the hardware issues are a large part of it. When I buy a system, reliability is a big issue for me. It's the reason I bought a Gamecube over the PS2 in the last generation. What good is having a billion games if the system craps out frequently? As of now, I only own a Wii. The PS3 has too few games and I have no desire to buy a Blu-Ray player and the 360 has too few Japanese games and hardware issues. The Wii was my only option in the home console space.

yeah, psn needs some games first, as one of the few people who has both a ps3 and a 360, I know this for a fact. now, I really really like psn, as it is not laggy, like xbl, even while I play against zaqu who has a connection going over a 900mhz phone connection(aka total shit) and with invitations now... all the psn needs is movie downloads, and xmb access while in game. thats it, they will be equal. so then once the ps3 drops in price... youve got a pretty attractive console.

one thing I didn't like about this post though jim is that you only own a 360, and thus do not know how far psn has come.

if you mess around with it even for half an hour youll find some things in there that are clearly pointing to an epic serive... subscriptions, services, a video tab on the psn store... all being unused, or barely used right now... expect more in 08. but I'm not going to lie, I still like my 360 way more than my ps3. it just has more games, and when it comes down to it. thats all it needs. however since xbl has been shitty I've only been able to play rockband online... out of the twenty games I own... only one working online is pretty bad.

xbl. get fixed naow. my online gaming skills are getting so rusty... please...

Well, I've never experienced the differences of Live. I have only played with friends a few times and the Marketplace lacks a lot of what makes it great in the US. No TV Shows, movies, most demos don't make it here (BioShock, Eternal Sonata were the ones that made me cry), and DLC is very very scarce.

I won't get rid of my 360 because obviously, it's got the games and I already bought it. I am, however, buying a PS3 as soon as I go to the US (No way in hell I'm gonna pay the equivalent of $1050 USD for a PS3) and will probably make it my online system.

Also, I am not saying that a big Exodus is *going* to happen, this article is mere theorizing and analysis and is supposed to make you think and debate, which I'm glad to see it's doing for the most part.

Finally, a question for those of us ready to go the PS360 route:

To be serious, I don't remember Sony ever charging for the meagre online service that the PSdouble provided. Now, they really don't need something as robust and accessible as Xbox Live - they don't need matchmaking, they don't need Gamertags, and they could most certainly survive without a universal content delivery service.

PC gamers have done the same for years with a simple server browser, and it works fine as long as the user is competent. In fairness, though, I guess that's why it generally doesn't work on X360. lulz

The PS2 is, in my opinion, the greatest video game console ever (don’t flame me; I never owned an SNES). You’re missing out on innumerable great titles for what’s on the damn face buttons? That's a big 'IF" Jim. Sony's been touting free online since the medicre start in PS2. But I'll humor you..I would get both. But if the services were of equal footing this is easy one..PSN.

It all boils down to reliability and actual content.

Really the real question that should be asked is: What would the 360 be without it's great online service %100 of the time?

Without online the 360 is incomplete at best.

Y0j1mb0: Sony has already stated it may one day look into charging for the service, and as I said, there's no way in Hell that Sony, or any other corporation, would let you have for free something that you would pay for. It's the only reason why Xbox Live is subscription-based -- there are enough people justifying it with credit cards. As soon as Sony is confident it can get those same credit cards, it will attempt to charge.

Christ, stop whining over XBL's downtime, its worked flawlessly for years, now its having issues with the massive influx of new users thanks to Halo 3 and Christmas, give it time.

Play something else, talk with your family, play with a pet, so what if you can't frag someone today, camp in Halo.

Guess it doesn't bother me that much because I just don't give a shit about multi, I play with friends and friends only and even then my choices are limited to Gears(which I hate) and Halo 3.

Still, I can take comfort in the fact that no multi will ever be as bad as call of duty 4's, now that was a shitpile.

In a way, I'm sad that I have no desire to own a Wii or a PS3. I'm not an MS fanboy, it's just that MS has everything I could possibly want in games and service.

Microsoft really needs to pull their crap together and get it sorted out, because I'm beginning to think they're hanging by an ever-thinning thread. @Jim: Thats a good question. If I get a PS3 (which I might over the summer) I probably wouldn't subscribe to the PSN. I love XBL and the only reason I'd buy a PS3 in the first place is for the Bluray and maybe a few exclusives. So I'd probably not subscribe to the PSN if it cost money.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
