The Xbox 360 can save lives too, says Peter 'Sony who?' Moore photo

In true salt of the earth fashion, Peter Moore is making it clear that Microsoft is very much open to the idea of doing their part to help out the research community with a Foldating@home-like project of their own, powered by none other than the Xbox 360 and its subsequent installed base.

"If we truly believe that we can in some way marshal the resources of a much larger installed base of Xbox 360 owners, with a processor that's of equal power to the PS3, then you have my commitment that we'll look at that," commented Moore, corporate VP of interactive entertainment at Microsoft, to The Mercury News.

And if we believe we can add value to solving a gnarly problem such as medical problems and the health problems that Folding@home seems to be doing, then we'll certainly look at that very strongly."

The last time anybody bothered to take a count, the total number of PlayStation 3 users who were participating in this numbered in the 250,000+ range. Whether or not this is making a real difference is being monitored closely by Moore and the crew.

"I'm not quite sure yet whether we're seeing real tangible results from the PlayStation 3 Folding@home initiative. We continue to look at this and see whether there's real value," he added.

I'll go on record as saying you can bet the farm that if Sony starts seeing some real results from this, then you will see it (or something like it) on the 360. Expect Reggie to burst on to the scene too and throw the Wii's name into the mix in some capacity. Since their hardware is a bit limiting for this sort of work, there is no reason why they can't be involved in great things -- on some other grassroots level.

Let's see ... how about donating a ton of Wiis to various nursing homes or children's charities? Nevermind, I got it! How about a Celebrity Deathmatch between Reggie and our own Robert Summa? Admit it, you'd pay big money to see that one take place.

The next console race is going to be about who can fold faster.

Hell Yeah!
I'd pay to see that.

The next "pat on the back" move will be finding alternative power sources for your "PSQuattro". Maybe they will use a Fuel-Cell, Cell based processor next time.

I'd pay to see the Celebrity Deathmatch. I think Reggie would take Rob apart though.

I think Reggie would take us all out. That man means serious business. Rob would make him cry though.

Oh god. The pic was funny enough, but I burst out laughing once I scrolled down a bit and saw “Sony's blood” on the mug. Priceless.

Regarding the content of the post...well, considering that the computational output of PS3s running F@H amounts to nearly twice the teraFLOPS of all the other CPUs combined, I’d say, yeah, the PS3s are indeed helping out.

I would love to see this turn into a pissing match between 360 and PS3. "Who can take the largest market share in Folding@home computational volume". That would be great.

Did I misunderstand - or did I just see him claim the 360's processing capability are equal to the PS3?.... If that's the case, i'm sorry - but he's full of shit. The PS3 may not be the best gaming console at the moment - but that is undenyable.

Someone said it somewhere before me, but, Unless MS can match or surpass the PS3's folding speed, its doubtful they will release a Folding@360.

There might be an issue with the fact that Xbox360 doesn't really connect to the internet in general, but instead has a secured and dedicated connection straight to the XBL servers. Maybe they could get around this limitation with another firmware update, but if they can't then all F@H data would have to be sent through Microsoft's own XBL servers, rather than the various F@H servers. Even the video marketplace is on a separate service so as to not interfere with games, patches/updates and demo/XBLA downloads, but it works because it's still controlled and maintained by Microsoft. Because of this, I don't think F@H is a very good fit for Xbox360.

Sorry Rob, gotta side with Reggie. You have a name, therefore you are vulnerable to his "SUPER NAME TAKE" attack, and everyone knows what that's preceded by.

Foldating at home?

@Poetic Justice

It's the new craze. Forget about helping out research. Folding@home is all about scoring with the opposite sex.

But people actually have games to play on the 360. Folding on the PS3 works because PS3 owners have nothing better to do with it.
