Last week we went over Next-gen's list of the 50 greatest gaming innovations, noting that they forgot tentacle porn in the line up. Now they've put together a list of gaming's worst ideas ever, and again, tentacle porn is missing from the list.
They come out strong with a two-hit combo to Nintendo by listing the much-hated friend codes and the DS Microphone as entries No. 1 and 2. We tip our hat to Next-gen in agreement, and we're sending over virtual high fives for adding 3D goggles to the list.
They start to lose us on memory cards and backwards compatibility, but some strong points are made for both entries. The only thing we see missing is an entry for the fake currencies like Microsoft Points. They're just as stupid as getting five tokens for a dollar, except that Microsoft's case it seems more like we're getting three tokens for a dollar.
Head on over to Next-gen to read the full article.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Jesus did they ever have some shitty options.
NES Advantage was my tried and true in the end.
Man I wish I could have that controller on the Wii.
I'd trade my Classic Controller for that any day of the week.
Memory cards weren't some terrible thing, they were the only way gaming companies could've done memory storage for the period they existed without having to charge people hundreds of dollars for a HDD - remember, they were much more expensive back in the day.
And backwards compatibility is a terrible idea? Screw that. Next-Gen fails.
And thirdly, GTEs are not a bad thing either. God of War was a great game, but the GTEs made it even better. That is what set that game apart. Other games have done it, maybe not as well. Don't blame that on QTEs, blame it on shitty designers. It is proven that QTEs can work, and they can make a game great when used correctly.
Really now... you won't play those old games with the newer ones out? that might work for most genres, but god knows the RPG genre which is played for their story and characters and not their gameplay or graphics is a massive exception to that. the entire genre relies on either backwards compatability or remakes... and most rpg's are not made by square enix, so remakes don't happen like every other year. Until like every great game ever made becomes available for download BC is a must to play older games; though i would not mcuh like the idea of needing to re-buy a game i already owned. Hell, one of the things that's gonna help keep my PS2 alive is that fact that their are still many old PS1 games i have still yet to get around to playing.
This article blows for not having the power glove either.
Also, while the QTE is starting to feel like a gimmick, I still like it as long as it’s executed well and in a way that makes sense, such as in the God of War games. Tapping square as fast as I can in Heavenly Sword to stay on a moving rope was dumb, though.
+ Handheld-to-Console Connectivity (Execution was poor, because connectivity should not be a requirement for fun, but don't sacrifice the idea in general.)
+ Backward Compatibility (So we are supposed to be willing to by the games again, via a download service, Next-Gen? That is retarded! If you already own it there should be a mechanism to authorize your ownership)
+ Memory Cards (So we weren't supposed to save our game...? Again, that is fucking brilliant!)
+ Downloadable Mal-Content (This is 100% execution, think of a game you get for free but you can add stuff at a cost)
+ Dreamcast VMU (So you didn't want to save your game or play little minigames? Great Idea!)
+ Nintendo DS Microphone (uhhh...WHAT? Sure there are many games that use it badly, but you don't blame the feature of the system you blame the devs for sucking.)
Booo Next-Gen! Try harder next-time.
