Look around. You'll find no shortage of people that hate on the iPad. You'll also find no shortage of people that have and love the iPad. The love side was enough to have Apple's tablet computer sell out everywhere. And by everywhere, that means everywhere. It's so bad that the rest of the world will see a delay on the release of the device.
The international release has been delayed from this month, or "late April," to the end of May. Apple blames Americans for buying half a million units in one week. May 10th is when availability and pricing for the rest of the world will be laid out. For those that are waiting, the wait is now a bit longer.
For those that did manage to nab one, I have a new iPad game round-up coming up. My favorite in the new bunch is Knights of the Phantom Castle. This game is polished, and console gamers will feel right at home. More on this and others soon.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
In fact, I rank the iPad up there with Activisions $15 DLC for MW2. It just proves that people 1) have too much time on their hands, 2) too much money to burn, 3) compulsive needs to buy everything even if they don't need them at all and 4) are far dumber than any company could ever have expected.
Can't a person desire/enjoy/purchase a product these days without being called a fanboy?
I own a 360, PS3, Wii and iPhone, and I'd probably buy an iPad if I had more money saved up. Does that mean I'm a MS, Sony, Nintendo and Apple fanboy, or could it be that I just like playing games?
I'm sticking to my original thought that Ipads are for:
a. Techies
b. Tools
The way that the ipad doesn't support features nearly a decade old and justifies it by saying "Oh, you'll be using HTML5 in a year anyway..." either means the machine came out far too early or I'm right in feeling like Apple's taking more than a snooty approach to their "culture."
Can't a person desire/enjoy/purchase a product these days without being called a fanboy?
You! You are my fucking hero!
So, in short: IMO the only people that would blow the obscene amount of cash on something as irrelevant as the iPad are probably only in it for the "shiny! new toy!" feeling as opposed to something with some actual functionality.
Plus, they're releasing a new model with built in 3G so that the iPad can be even more like an iPhone with elephantitus. And then on top of THAT it's been hinted at that they may begin charging for OS updates.
This.
The term fanboy is being pushed around like a two dollar hooker at a frat party. Annoying.
And the haters, Jesus, I swear these lowlifes just run around looking for Apple and Microsoft threads to complain in. They don't know why (probably have never even used said product), they just know they have to hate.
Anyway, don't have the bones to pony up for this device, not sure I need it either to be honest. But it looks pretty cool to be sure.
Stick me with the people who are holdouts, I'll probably buy an iPad at some point but definitely not this gen.
Multitasking, or task switching, is coming to the device later this year. It was announced for the iPhone last week and it was said it will come to the iPad later this year, I assume iTouch too. So yes you will be able listen to Pandora and browse the web at the same time.
> irrelevant as the iPad are probably only in it for the "shiny! new toy!" feeling as opposed to something

Translation: Since I don't find it useful, no one else should either.
> I won't call you a fanboy, but I will point out that the iPad is roughly the size of a sheet of paper,
> which is way too huge for a convenient mobile device (iPhone, PSP, etc) as it doesn't fit in a pocket
> and not big enough to compete with a laptop's power, plus they're absurdly expensive.
Wrong on all points. It's not meant to be a pocket sized mobile device or a laptop replacement. If you want a pocket sized mobile device, there's an iPhone. If you want a laptop, there's tons of those too. Tablets have failed miserably in the marketplace until now exactly because they were marketed as laptop replacements rather than what they should be, computing appliances that fit the gap between PDAs and laptop computers. All of the previous tablets were a usability nightmares because they tried to squeeze a full blown desktop OS and application suite onto a small device rather than design a new OS specifically for a tablet/touch screens. Apple is the first company to do it right, and I'll accept your apology when the iPad sells millions and all the PC manufacturers under the sun are releasing rip off after rip off that will also fail.
You probably poo-pood the iPod and iPhone too when they came out.
- Word
From my own perspective; The iPad has basically replaced my pad and paper for everyday work tasks. It can sync my server email accounts, my Google accounts and work Exchange accounts too to one place, which is transportable. Task management, Twitter tools and a fully featured browser all at my finger tips. That's only 50% of it's usage.
My wife reads all her (cheaper) yearly magazine subs on it now, no more corner paper stacks and no more lossy recycling. From this one feature alone she wants her own.
The rest of my usage is gaming. To be honest, I both didn't think the games would look good and that they would have awful controls, thankfully on both points I was wrong. They're not all perfect, some could use UI improvements, but on the whole 'touch' gaming is fun. I'm not about to replace BootCamp (for gaming) any time soon, but I'm yet to be turned off by the iPad.
People ask me daily "any regrets" and I have to answer "no".
"Also, i think you have yet to find out how taxing diapers are on the wallet."
Don't remind me! I have to pick up another pack on the way home from work!
Jesus, I'm fucking old.
Back on topic. Don't get me wrong, I understand why people find the iPad unappealing. Like Syn said, it's big and bulky, and certainly isn't as convenient as a DS, PSP, iPhone or any other gaming device or laptop for that matter.
However, I don't think a person should be labeled a fanboy or a sheep just because he wants one, even if it is just the "ooh, shiny!" appeal that drives his desire. After all, we're gamers. Do we really need any of the crap we collect?
That's mostly the point I was trying to drive home.
And if you guys want to fling around the "poor people can't buy it, so they're hatin'" argument, try answering these similarly stupid retorts first:
1. Why are you guys talking about this being more convenient and portable than a laptop? If you're not some scrawny little girl, a laptop should be just as light and convenient (I can carry mine one-handed, easily :/ ). Try hitting the gym, guys aren't supposed to have twig arms.
2. There are better "rip-off" tablets coming up. More features. Same size. Better pricing. So why are you buying this again? Oh, because its SHINY. I forgot.
Again, these 2 arguments are about as stupid as the poor people durr hurr one.
Still of the personal opinion that the iPod (not that nano sh*t) is the best MP3 player on the market, so don't whine at me for being a hater. When Apple makes their next "iPod," I'll gladly buy it like I did last time. Just not sure when that will be exactly...
That said, this won't really affect me too much, until OS4 rolls out and I'll have to wait for it to get hacked. :(
Thank you for posting my thoughts for me. Saves me the trouble of articulating all of that.
Incidentally, No, a $500 laptop-sized device is in no way a competitor with the DS. If anyone says that this PS3 expensive, non-handheld service centric device in some way competes with the $150, handheld, gaming centric ds, they have no idea what they are talking about. Especially if they are analysts, journalists, or industry veterans. It takes an idiot to try to pit handheld gaming devices as direct competitors to tablet PCs, and I mention this because I've seen it done, not because it was done here.
And honestly, saying that it's just a big iPod touch is like saying that a Ferrari is just a fast Volkswagen. And it's not supposed to be as portable as an iPod, but it's definitely more portable than a laptop.
I will say though, while I do highly approve of the ipad as a whole, I don't agree with apple's attitude toward flash and adobe. Their refusal to support it is frustrating to me.
And Australians don't get iBook access. We don't. No e-books for Australian users at all. So, yeah. If you live down under, probably should re-think about buying the iPad.
The iPad appears to be a netbook, but with all the restrictions of a music player. To be honest, I kind of want it to fall a little flat on it's face. I think the device is very well designed for a lap top and would kind of like to see it become a standard. A lot of those restriction keep any form a virus protection from being necesary as well, I imagine. But the problem is that the thing is a closed platform. Every program you run on it must be approved by apple. There is massive monopolization potential here, but more importantly, computing is limitted in how much it can evolve if the programs they run must be approved by the computer manufacturer, expecially if that manufacturer has a monopoly and a vested interest in said monopoly (the app store). I have similar complainst against microsoft, as a new computing revolution would, by definition of revolution, require the overthrow of the old players. A worst case scenario involves a decay into obscurity, which occurs when there is no replacement for some reason (hello Vista).
You can't have a Wii among computers if there is no method by which a competitor can screw up the revenue stream. You can only have a fall into decay as the companies continue to exert more and more control over their customers.
Ironically though, I actually do think that this thing is perfect. I'm guessing it doesn't crash, is easy to use, doesn't require virus software, and for a laptop (not a netbook) it's affordable. I hate that Apple is becoming anti-consumer with it, though. And I still think that it is a terrible i-gadget, part of the ipod line in name alone, and I think that naming it the ipad will cost them quite a lot in lost sales from people who, like me, think it's a big ipod touch. Heck, I still think it's a big ipod touch, but I figure that since I only use my computer to surf the web anyway, it's good enough.
Sidenote, I own nes snes segagenesis ps1 ps2 ps3 dreamcast n64 gamecube wii xbox xbo360 iphone ipod psp AND a DS. A FANBOY OF ALL!!!
Anyway,
like I said just got ipad and it is really.... get ready for it...
are you ready...?
ITS REALLY A BIG IPOD!!! YeahHHHHHhhhHHH (balloons fall)
End of story. Its not better, cooler, sleeker, blah blah blah
Just a big fucking ipod!
Oh and a laptop (shitty 400 dollar one) can let you download video game emulators, steal music, steal movies, STEAL STEAL STEAL, watch porn, and I can still call friends from a landline (or my iphone).
You have an ipad? Please tell me how my opinion is wrong.
BTW - I didnt call anyone an idiot for buying or make fun...
So if your are gonna troll back, heres an early go fuck yourself!
haha jk I love destructoid!
How is something I use everyday for a large amount of tasks, a waste of money?
It may be a waste of money in your mind, but that's no reason to send over bad vibrations, conversely I hope you have a wonderful day!
