Best of 2013

The frustrating thing about these game of the year posts is they all follow the same format. First I'll tell you about what a great year 2013 was for games. Then I'll briefly talk in vague terms about the category in question, which in this case is platformers.

Next I'll give you a refresher on all the nominees for the Best Platformer of 2013, as you furiously scroll to the bottom of the page instead of reading this text.

This is the part where I reveal the winner.

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World is amazing. It's my favorite Wii U game of the year, bar none. I had a smile on my face virtually the entire time, as I scrambled up walls in my catsuit, chased bunny rabbits around in circles, and took in countless nostalgia-filled homages to more than a quarter century of franchise history.

Hats off to the folks at Nintendo EAD Tokyo. Super Mario 3D World looks gorgeous, the multiplayer is sublime, and it's just generally a great deal of fun. Get yourself a Wii U and check this game out. Seriously. Do it right now.

Super Mario 3D World also took home the number one spot for our community poll section. It was followed by Rayman Legends, and Tearaway.

Hardline 29: Destiny's lukewarm reception, first taste of Smash Bros., and the world is a vampire

Hardline is back! For this week's episode, Max filled in to speak with me and Bill about Destiny and how the game fails to live up to Bungie's pedigree in some areas. Super Smash Bros., on the other hand, is just plain great...more

Playthrough: Destiny's Mars has cars, but not a single hot dog in sight

I've come down with a bad case of Dumpster Mono, and Max Scoville is terrified of germs, so he made me stay home so he could play Destiny and call it 'work'. But, without my responsible guidance, he got tricked into playing ...more

Max and Bill must kill the Moon-Princes

Man, Destiny. I seriously can't remember the last game that I felt so ambivalent about, but was so completely hooked on. Here's me and Bill dicking around on the Moon and discussing our general thoughts on the game, and killing the Moon-Princes with a big dumb sword. Is it a "Let's Play?" I don't know. But we're enjoying ourselves, and maybe you'll enjoy watching our enjoyment.more
