The winner of Destructoid Game of the Year 2007 photo

Picking the Destructoid Game of the Year was no easy task, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly varied community response to yesterday’s list of nominees. It seemed like each one of the five finalists garnered an equal amount of support: “Pick Mass Effect!” “Super Mario Galaxy is easily the best!” “COD4 FTW!” “BioShock, hands down!” “No competition. The Orange Box!”

This high praise is well deserved, as all of the games are destined to be classics in their own right. And trust me when I say this: it was a very close race (between three in particular). But what game emerged the victor and will forever wear the green robotic crown?

First things first: To set the “awards show” mood, I just put on a tux, am standing on a stage built entirely of old Super Nintendo and Genesis cartridges, and am about to speak the following through my well-worn Snake Mountain microphone:

Without further adieu, the nominees for Destructoid Game of the Year 2007 are:

BioShock
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Mass Effect
The
Orange Box
Super Mario Galaxy

And the winner is ...

*ripping envelope*

BIOSHOCK!

BioShock was surrounded by heavy praise and accolades the minute it unleashed its beauty on the world. No doubt you have all heard many of the same things mentioned over and over again about this genuine masterpiece: gorgeous graphics, revolutionary FPS storytelling, breathtaking atmosphere. I will try not to repeat the same things. While they are all true, there is so much more to this game than just simple aesthetics.

Almost all of the editors had BioShock at the very top of their respective lists of favorite games of the year. Beyond just the superb quality of the package, we all felt there was an experience that transcended basic gameplay. To play BioShock was to experience something that few gamers had ever experienced before. It was this immersive originality that elevated the game above all others.

Between genuine moral decisions, the game never held your hand with pointless exposition or useless cutscenes. For one of the few times in videogame history, you really felt like you were the main character (not just controlling him), entering the memorable world of Rapture and unlocking its numerous secrets as you went along. Instead of playing a narrative (as you do in so many other games), you actually were the narrative. From the opening plane crash to the emotional ending, BioShock never missed a beat in enveloping the player in its next to flawless world.

Even all these months later, we here at Destructoid still revisit BioShock just to experience its hypnotic spell again for, what feels like, the first time. It truly is a game that will stand the test of time and be talked about (and played) for years to come. A genuine one of a kind.

So, there you have it: our Game of the Year for 2007. Now, in no way does singling out BioShock signify it was miles better than any of the other exceptional offerings of the year. 2007 was a stellar year for videogames on all systems; any of a large handful of games could have taken the prize and most us us here at Destructoid wouldn't even have batted an eye (in fact, in my special little world, Super Mario Galaxy was the winner -- shhhhh).

Congrats, BioShock! Go out and celebrate!

____________________

Editors Note: On a personal note, I just wanted to say a few things to wrap this all up.

To arrive at our Game of the Year, each of the editors compiled a list of their Top Ten games of 2007. There were absolutely no stipulations. If you loved a game and wanted to put it on the list, that was all there was to it. No one was required to play anything we hadn’t already played or research things on systems we didn’t own. Basically, there were no questions asked.

From those lists, the nominees and eventual Game of the Year were decided. We aren’t a professional news site who feels some moral responsibility to play every single videogame in creation to make a fair and balanced decision. Being a blog full of extremely passionate gamers, we just wanted to have a little fun and elicit some exciting discussion about our favorite games of the year. Hopefully we did that.

Now, here’s to an even better 2008

-chad.

If Halo won game of the year that would be straight up nonsense. The only reason it would even be considered game of the year would be the sheer numbers and units it sold.

Since thats not what its about here at destructoid (thank ODIN/BUDDAH/GOD/MOHAMMED/JESUS CHRIST/ZEUS/CHRISTOPHER WALKEN)
Game of the year around these parts seems to praise innovation, creativity, fun factor, etc.

All of which Halo 3 has none of.

Its fun as fuck, I lvoe gatting people, but anything new? NOPE

Whoa lord, here come the fanboys. "SOMEONE'S OPINION IS DIFFERENT FROM MINE?!?!?!"

I don't care too much about GotY awards, but to be frank, even though it's a good game I find/found Bioshock MASSIVELY overrated. People act like it's the most revolutionary game of all time, and will change the face of FPS forever.

Oh well. Different strokes.

ShadowXOR: And you spent 5 posts in this topic bitching about how shitty different aspects of the game are.

Congratulations, You've stated your disagreement and opinion

Cry a river, Build a bridge, Get over it.

Bioshock was only my number 2 game. Not my number one choice. I don't really care what they think. My GOTY is Mass Effect. Even still. I'm not going to cry because my game didn't get first.

Seriously though, Bioshock wouldn't be MY number one, but it's DEFINITELY deserving of the praise it recieves.

And anyone out there (the post above mine comes to mind) that has lost respect for Destructoid just because they shared their opinions is a racist. There, I said it.

@frozenbabylon:

I'm not crying about anything, you're being a whiney bitch. I was having a discussion with other members, so would you kindly go fuck yourself?

The reason I brought up the things it did badly is because everyone treats it as a perfect game glossing over some pretty major issues it has. We understand everyone loves it, it's nice to hear differing opinions once in a while rather than a giant circle-jerk for Bioshock. If there is one place to discuss our opinion for GotY I would think it should be in the GotY article.

@-the-mole-:

I'd say Deus Ex: Invisible War was the biggest disappointment of the century. Bioshock was a good game that would have been much better if they didn't label it as a spiritual successor to SS2. That set the bar too high, not to mention the game shares very little with SS2 so I'm not sure why they bothered bringing it up.

Invisible War was a bad game no matter how you look at it, Bioshock just wasn't what they labeled it as.

For me Bioshock was the "Best Interactive Media Representation" (or something like that), with Portal (or TOB if you want) and Mario Galaxy battling for "Best Game" (as in, fun to play).

@Action Bastard
Well, it IS the official award of the site. Even if the staff didn't play all the games that came out in the year, or even all of the "big ones", it still is the site's choice. You could call them unprofessional, but I think Chad already addresses that in the post.

@Niero
You should have done (somehow) 3 different pages with a different GOTY picks ( that would have appeared random to users) so we could've seen people complaining about every choice.

@ShadowXor
I could never get System Shock (either) to work =(, not years ago when I had one of my first gaming PCs, and not this year when I wanted to play it before Bioshock.

I agree 100% with Colette and Necros. Get over yourselves, people. God forbid that someone’s (or some blog’s) opinion differ from yours.

Remember, kids...

opin·ion noun : a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter
courtesy of Merriam-Webster OnLine

See that whole “in the mind” part of the definition? Yeah, that means that each person is going to have his or her own idea of what the Game of the Year should be, and that’s perfectly logical.

P.S. Chad, my mind is forever scarred by that horrible image.

Portal would be my GOTY, and SS2 was indeed one of the best games ever made. I've only played the PC demo of Bioshock though, so I can't really judge it, except that what I've heard of it makes me disappointed at the lack of RPG in what is claimed to be an FPSRPG.
System Shock 1 and 2 are both notoriously difficult to get working. ;) Maybe I should make a blog post detailing instructions to run them on a modern XP machine, I've got both up and running right now.

I have to agree with this decision, it was just an original, awesome game (a rarity now in the fps genre).

Mario Galaxy + Orange Box + COD:4 were close behind, but i think for sheer jaw dropping moments, Bioshock pips it.

I don't quite understand the praise that Bioshock receives. It's an eight hour long series of fetch quests (nothing but fetch quests) that reward your playful obedience by giving you one of the absolute easiest boss fights ever followed by an ending that is both awful and terrible.

Seriously though, people. Fetch quests. The entire game.

- Possible spoilers -

I don't quite remember how the very beginning of the game goes, but I do remember it from this point:

- Inventor dies. Fetch these items to finish the Lazarus Vector.

- You want inside? Fetch pictures of these things for me and I'll let you in.

- You want to hang out with me? Fetch pictures of these three people for me. One at a time, though -- be sure to bring them to me one by one so we can make this as long as possible!

- Another inventor has died! Guess what you'll be collecting? That's right: crap you need to finish it for his sorry dead ass.

- You want to be a Big Daddy? You're gonna need, six of these, four of these, two of these and one of these.

- Not a fetch quest, but now you get to escort a goddamn little girl through a sea of enemies that have no intention of actually hurting you -- if you get hurt during this part you're clearly an idiot. Just stand in front of the little girl with a wrench. Why does the wrench two-hit every enemy at the end of the game?

What's worse is that they tried to make the fetch-quest story related. What a plot twist that was! "Oh snap, son! You got played, but thanks for getting my groceries for me!"

End spoilers.

Anyway, I guess I'm done. For the record, my GOTY was Persona 3, WarTech: Senko no Ronde or Virtua Fighter 5 Online.

BioShock? Pfft. Predictable bastards. :) The ending was mostly terrible, so a lot of the game's awesomeness was negated, in my opinion. Meh.

I really haven't played many of this year's games, for obvious reasons. No Mass Effect, no Mario (I don't even know anyone with a Wii), and no COD4. Halo 3 is an okay game, but it doesn't deserve any GOTY accolades, and I say that as a Halo fan. So, I'm going to have to go with The Orange Box. Since a collection of five (or three) entirely seperate games apparently qualifies as one game, this one is the hands-down winner. I don't think it gets much better than this.
