The winner of Destructoid Game of the Year 2007 photo

Picking the Destructoid Game of the Year was no easy task, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly varied community response to yesterday’s list of nominees. It seemed like each one of the five finalists garnered an equal amount of support: “Pick Mass Effect!” “Super Mario Galaxy is easily the best!” “COD4 FTW!” “BioShock, hands down!” “No competition. The Orange Box!”

This high praise is well deserved, as all of the games are destined to be classics in their own right. And trust me when I say this: it was a very close race (between three in particular). But what game emerged the victor and will forever wear the green robotic crown?

First things first: To set the “awards show” mood, I just put on a tux, am standing on a stage built entirely of old Super Nintendo and Genesis cartridges, and am about to speak the following through my well-worn Snake Mountain microphone:

Without further adieu, the nominees for Destructoid Game of the Year 2007 are:

BioShock
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Mass Effect
The
Orange Box
Super Mario Galaxy

And the winner is ...

*ripping envelope*

BIOSHOCK!

BioShock was surrounded by heavy praise and accolades the minute it unleashed its beauty on the world. No doubt you have all heard many of the same things mentioned over and over again about this genuine masterpiece: gorgeous graphics, revolutionary FPS storytelling, breathtaking atmosphere. I will try not to repeat the same things. While they are all true, there is so much more to this game than just simple aesthetics.

Almost all of the editors had BioShock at the very top of their respective lists of favorite games of the year. Beyond just the superb quality of the package, we all felt there was an experience that transcended basic gameplay. To play BioShock was to experience something that few gamers had ever experienced before. It was this immersive originality that elevated the game above all others.

Between genuine moral decisions, the game never held your hand with pointless exposition or useless cutscenes. For one of the few times in videogame history, you really felt like you were the main character (not just controlling him), entering the memorable world of Rapture and unlocking its numerous secrets as you went along. Instead of playing a narrative (as you do in so many other games), you actually were the narrative. From the opening plane crash to the emotional ending, BioShock never missed a beat in enveloping the player in its next to flawless world.

Even all these months later, we here at Destructoid still revisit BioShock just to experience its hypnotic spell again for, what feels like, the first time. It truly is a game that will stand the test of time and be talked about (and played) for years to come. A genuine one of a kind.

So, there you have it: our Game of the Year for 2007. Now, in no way does singling out BioShock signify it was miles better than any of the other exceptional offerings of the year. 2007 was a stellar year for videogames on all systems; any of a large handful of games could have taken the prize and most us us here at Destructoid wouldn't even have batted an eye (in fact, in my special little world, Super Mario Galaxy was the winner -- shhhhh).

Congrats, BioShock! Go out and celebrate!

____________________

Editors Note: On a personal note, I just wanted to say a few things to wrap this all up.

To arrive at our Game of the Year, each of the editors compiled a list of their Top Ten games of 2007. There were absolutely no stipulations. If you loved a game and wanted to put it on the list, that was all there was to it. No one was required to play anything we hadn’t already played or research things on systems we didn’t own. Basically, there were no questions asked.

From those lists, the nominees and eventual Game of the Year were decided. We aren’t a professional news site who feels some moral responsibility to play every single videogame in creation to make a fair and balanced decision. Being a blog full of extremely passionate gamers, we just wanted to have a little fun and elicit some exciting discussion about our favorite games of the year. Hopefully we did that.

Now, here’s to an even better 2008

-chad.

OH GOD CHAD!! Why would you put a link to that picture?!?! My eyes, they burn now.

Also, as much as I wanted SMG to win, I kinda figured Bioshock would pull out the win. It's a worthy candidate.

If not for shady business practices the game you would be announcing instead would be System Shock 3.

Personally I'm torn between Orange Box and Super Mario Galaxy for my "personal" GotY.

If you want to play a game better than Bioshock go pick up System Shock 2...it's way better.

@Sheep - "That's because your hands were chained... and that's all I have to say about that."

Oh, like any linear game. Neet. Next time you decide to post, don't be so fucking stupid. You probably thought it should to go TEH HALOZ 3!!!!11!1!

@neiltc - I think it's a testament to YOUR mediocrity.

@Shadow - Incorrect. Bioshock is in fact better. What makes bioshock isn't really the gameplay, for me. I mean, it's original, it controls wonderfully, (much better than SS2), but the thing that makes Bioshock GOTY is the world it's set it, and the story it follows. Though I know you haven't finished it, who would ever finish a game they thought was bad? But you can't actually comment on it until you've seen it's exciting conclusion. Confronting Andrew Ryan is one of the most compelling moments in the whole of the videogaming pantheon. SS2 had nothing like that.

I'm confused. Why are people naming this choice right or wrong? It's neither, it's a tallied result from a series of ballots. No one is right or wrong, it's all a matter of personal choice. Just because you have a different choice doesn't mean that ours is wrong.

*confused, goes to get soup*

I am a very ADD gamer. I love games, but rarely ever finish them. I even find the episodes of HL2 to be just right in length. The point is, I was compelled enough by Bioshock to finish it; and for me, thats saying something.

@TheStripe:

Bioshock is not "in fact" better, it's your opinion. SS2 had plenty of better moments than meeting Andrew Ryan, such as meeting Polito who turned out to be Shodan.

I did in fact beat Bioshock and purchased the collector's edition. Your ignorant fanboyishness is what makes you say such stupid things. You claim I called Bioshock bad in which I never said anything remotely like that. It's a great game but highly overrated and I still feel SS2 is far superior. Stop making assumptions since it makes you look like an ignorant fool, and feel free to check my achievements next time so you aren't talking out of your ass, I beat it shortly after release and picked it up the day of release. I was very excited for it.

TheStripe - Bravo, took the words right out of my mouth. When taken from start to finish, Bioshock's storyline was far and above anything we've previously seen in videogaming, including System Shock. For this, it deserves GOTY.
covah's Avatar
covah at 12/28/2007 12:33
Don't agree. After I was done playing it for the first time and the hype wore down, I played through it a second time and thought while still a AAA title by any means, it isn't GOTY in my view.
ShadowXOR's Avatar

ShadowXOR's Avatar
ShadowXOR at 12/28/2007 12:38
Yeah, let me mention that before you accuse me of even more shit, I saw both endings as well. The "good" ending was probably the better one overall...I guess. It's like picking the lesser of two evils because they both sucked.

Bioshock was friggin great, dont know if I would personally consider it game of the Year, but again, from a technical and storyline stand point. It was definitely a contender.

Although I cant help but think you had a hand in swaying some votes Miss Bennett. I know Id stick a fork in my retinas if you asked me nicely.

And to everyone else who is hating on Bioshock, get over it. At least HALO didnt win. THAT would be a fucking travesty.

@ Colette

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's all about people's preferences. And I could see why Bioshock was people's number one. No other game has had three words make such an emotional impact on me; "would you kindly."

@Mr Junko

And what if Halo did win? What if Halo was people's favorite? Halo certainly isn't my game of the year, but it's in my top. Before I thought things through, it was my number one game, and there should be nothing wrong with that at all.

My list:
1.Orange Box
2.Bioshock (Despite the fact that I haven't re-played it)
3.Halo 3
4.Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (I never played it on PSOne so it's fair)
5.CoD 4
