The Wii is just not Epic's 'thing' photo

Epic's Mark Rein has said that the Wii isn't his company's medium, and asking the studio to develop games for Nintendo's little white waggle box is akin to asking a sculptor to paint.

"No, we don't have any plans to make something for the Wii. That's like asking a sculptor when he's going to start painting. That's just not our medium," stated Rein, reiterating what I just said above (which he didn't have to do for me, but thanks). "That's not our area of expertise. Our area of expertise is the more high-end consoles and things that push technology higher. That's what we do.

"There's a lot more water in that well for us; when that runs dry then maybe we'd have to think of doing something else, but I don't think that well is going to run dry any time soon."

Fair enough. The Wii has moved beyond games consoles to the point where I think it almost inhabits its own space, and I can see why some developers just don't have an interest in it. Fans looking forward to Gears of Waggle will have a long wait though, unfortunately.

"I love how you use stereotypes of the average 360 owner while praising the Wii. Your bias is hilarious. I could give similar stereotypes about both PC and Wii owners. Like I said, your not acting any better than the "PS360 fanboys"."

Where do I praise the Wii? Obviously, I'm being biased here. I'm playing the role of the defensive Wiifan right now. What's wrong with that? If we were discussing the political ramifications of opening the doors of NATO to Ukraine and Georgie, I would try to be serious and unbiased. For this, meh, I'll screw around, thank you very much.

As a sidenote, how exactly have I become the main object of your ire in this thread? This thread is like a gold mine for ridiculously biased fanboy-fueled comments about video game systems and their primary demographic. What made me stand out? Was it my attack on your grammar? Don't let that get to you. I was just messin' around.

Also, Alex, you still went with the wrong form of "your." Different forms of your, while sounding the same, actually mean different things.

Your = Second person possessive adjective.
You're = The contracted form of "you are" - which is usually what "you're" looking for.

Wow your opinion of Jim is apparently almost as low as my opinion of you. Almost.

And good graphics does not make a good game, just like non-HD graphics dont make a bad game. In fact, past a certain point, graphics arent that important. Unless you have a fantastic design and are building a magnificent atmosphere with your graphics (which Galaxy and Metroid managed to do quite well on the Wii thank you very much) they dont impact too heavily on reasonable peoples ultimate enjoyment of a game.

Wii isn't old you are wrong btw. And i didn't hear 'Mark' shit on the Wii.

@ AClockWorkMelon Are you really arguing that it is more excusable to have no WiFi than no DVD player? If we are "pushing technology" it makes way more sense to include fairly up to date and standard technologies like WiFi (you really don't have that yet?) rather than formats that are on their way out. Sure, you could use an ethernet cable. You could also use controllers with cords, but no current gen console does. It seems way more likely that someone buying a Wii will have an alternate way of playing DVDs than it is likely that someone buying an XBox would prefer not to have the ability to use WiFi.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, are you saying Mega Man and Metroid are similar? Have you ever played any Mega Man games? I could give a shit about the Wii, but insulting Mega Man is just a step too far.

So what is Epic going to go when the Wii userbase surpasses the combined userbase of the Xbox360/PS3 later this year? What is Epic going to do when the Wii userbase is double that of the PS3/360 combined? Epic is not going to ignore the Wii forever. Epic is a business afterall, and their investors will demand that they develop on the Wii.

No clockwork. A system that improves technically on the entire previous generation, while running more efficiently, with far fewer technical issues than competitors, at a very low price point, and with innovative motion controls. These are FACTS, that describe a console that is not a 'piece of junk.' (i was kidding about you being missed, you obviously missed my smiley, you seem reasonable)

Also, i know you wrote IMO, but describing only very few games as decent (not even good, only decent, a very meager description) because you 'dont care' for others is a little silly.

Thunderball, 360 has wireless capability. And yes, I know it's expensive. I really don't give a rat's ass. My 360 is part of my entertainment system next to my computer. A cord stretching two feet doesn't hurt my feelings.

Also, I don't have a DVD player. Why not? Because I have a 360. Oh, and a PS2. And an Xbox. They all play DVDs. The Wii can't. You could even say they all do what Nintendon't. ;)

@ Killias2

If you're the type to believe that me saying I'm not interested in Mega Man = me insulting Mega Man, then there's no point in us having a discussion at all. And yeah, I have played the games. Some of them were shit (mostly the ones where you play small children engaging in grid warfare within a computer), most were ok (the side scrollers). Is it so evil that Mega Man just isn't my bag?

@ BigKev

Improving on the technology of previous generations...?

I heartily disagree. The "innovative" motion controls aren't all that awesome. A lot of the games seem clunky and unprecise when used with the Wiimote. 90% of my friends who come to play my Wii prefer using other controllers when those controllers are an option.

The system itself, hardware wise, is weaker than even the PS2 and Xbox. Graphics are weaker (yes, yes, I realize graphics don't make a game, I love the old school Final Fantasies), it can't have as many moving objects on the screen at one time as the other systems and the games themselves don't have the opportunity to be as LARGE as they are on other systems.

The only thing I can spot that enables the Wii to even deserve standing in the shadows of true next-gen systems is WiFi (which is great, but how can I comment on it when I don't particularly care about it?) and its motion controller... which uh. I can't stand the thought of playing BioShock with a Wiimote.

Yes. Yes it is evil.

Also, for the record, the Network games and EXE and all that do NOT COUNT AS MEGA MAN GAMES! I don't care how much they try to bastardize Mega Man into being the next Pokemon. IMO, they haven't made a Mega Man game since Rockman and Forte (Mega Man and Bass here).

Honestly though, I was more surprised by you equating Metroid and Mega Man. Whatup wit' dat homes?

I disagree that its weaker than the PS2 and the Xbox. I dont have it on me, but i used to have a detailed write-up of how the Wii was probably more accurately described as around 2 times as powerful as an XBox. And do you really think the Brawl disk holds less than an Xbox disk?

And i think Bioshock would be great with a Wiimote if someone wanted to make it. If you'd played Metroid you would realise just how viable a good FPS is on the Wii.

Also, the system doesnt produce clunky controls, poorly made games do. In GOOD games, ive had no problems with the controls.

Just from when I was younger, I guess. Mega Man and Metroid were both side-scrolling shooter thingies. I remember being entertained, but always going back to classics like Final Fantasy and Zelda. What more can I say? *Shrug.*

Want to guess what my favorite system is? ZOMG curveball! The SNES roxx my soxx. I currently own a GBA, DS, SNES and N64. I just happen to think the Wii isn't nearly worth all the hype it gets. If I were to wager a guess, I'd say it really is genuine love for Nintendo and the need to justify the purchase that makes people so defensive of the Wii.

It's a party system built for party games. I don't want to spend 250 dollars on a party game.

Besides, the zombie-rocker in Guitar Hero III for the Wii is inexcusable and an example that graphics CAN potentially break a game, especially if it's obvious that they were -trying- to make it look good.

Oh- and you're a fanboy and your mother's a cunt. ;)

lol Take it easy guys, been nice debating this stuff but I've got to head out. Leave lots of interesting stuff for me to read when I get back!

I would pay $60 just to shut Mark Rein the hell up, but at least he knows which side his bread is buttered on: graphics technology.

I own and enjoyed Gears of War, but the game is ridiculously overrated. The only thing groundbreaking about it is the engine (which is, admittedly, very impressive). The storyline and dialogue are laughable (I spent the game searching in vain for a single likable character), the color palette includes about 100 shades of grey and brown, and the gameplay, while relatively fun, was immediately eclipsed by the contemporaneous Rainbow Six: Vegas. In short, the game is soulless and uninspired in almost every way (except technically, of course).

So I think Rein is right: the Wii isn't Epic's "thing." The system obviously can't pull off HD graphics, so a game like Gears -- so dependent on its engine to carry it -- would flop on the Wii. But put the Wii's admittedly limited power in the hands of someone like Retro Studios (whose artists have almost invariably impressed me with their work in the Metroid Prime series), and the result is a game that truly pops off the screen, despite being technically inferior to a game like Gears.

Also, wow at the spelling of nostalgia ("nastagia") above.

"If I were to wager a guess, I'd say it really is genuine love for Nintendo and the need to justify the purchase that makes people so defensive of the Wii. "

Not really. I have a Wii because it fills some niches in my library: 1. Sure, it's "casual," but Wii Sports and Wario Ware and Mario Party 8 are lots of fun with a group of friends. 2. I didn't own a Gamecube. Oops, I guess I'm not such a Nintendo fanboy. I owned a PS2, and I figured this was a great chance to explore the Gamecube. 3. There are lots of great "hardcore" games that I can get for the Wii that I just can't get elsewhere. Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Super Smash Bros Brawl, No More Heroes, Mario Kart Wii, etc.

All of this for a measly 250 dollar investment. I already have a gaming PC, so there are only a couple of PS360 games I am interested in that I can't get. Heck, honestly, only Ninja Gaiden 2 really begs to be played now, and I'm still hoping Resident Evil 5 comes out for the PC. Not that there aren't other good PS3 or 360 exclusives, but there aren't any others that I am interested in. I have Metal Gear Solid for the PSOne, but never got more than halfway. I never bought any of the GTA3's because they just weren't my dig. PC has plenty of great FPS's, so I don't really give a damn about Halo.

That's why I own a Wii. I'm not an obsessive Nintendo fanboy. I owned a PSOne and a PS2. The PS3 is just too expensive, and it doesn't have enough exclusive games for ME to justify the price-tag. You might be different. That's cool. Have fun with it.

Epic games has the ip rights to some of the most notable FPS games in history.

The wii has the capability for 1:1 fps shooting as displayed by the amazingly fun Metroid Prime 3.

Conclusion: Epic hates money.

Anyway without having read the slaps of text. Has anyone thought that it might not be soly the graphics that he means?

Epic makes manly futuristic online shooters. Can you imagine 32 player online on a Wii? Ya lets all enter our 32 digit code every 5 minutes to start a game. It will take years before you get a game running between two of your mates let alone 32 people!

I have a Wii, I like it, dare I say it I even like Sports. But it's clear that an top graphics online shooter isn't doable on the Wii. Epic could make something like MP though, but then again single player isn't really Epic's strong point.

Because Dickhead Of All Trades decided to open his mouth and use the thread as a podium for some Wii bashing.

After all, real gamers wouldn't dare use a Wii, would they? (...as I look at my collection that includes No More Heroes, Okami, Need for Speed: Carbon, and Zak and Wiki)

People like that are the reason why we need "Block user" function. I don't mind people who don't like the Wii for whatever reason and are at least civil about it, but Dickhead of All Trades goes way beyond that.

Oh, by the way, I also own a PS3. I still play the Wii more.

I agree with Jack on some points. I am one of the few that got very upset with the Wii, but on the other hand I do realize that nintendo needed to make money from their huge Gamecube/n64 losses. And casual gaming for people who never played video games is a good thing.

So it is very simple, buy what you like, play what you like. If Epic doesn't want to dumb down their UnrealEngine, then that's fine, it might be a headache to do that.

They should release unreal 2004 on the Wii to satisfy the few wii'ers who would enjoy UT on the wii lol.

Nintendo did not lose money on the Gamecube or the N64. They made money.

In the over 20 years that Nintendo has been in the console business, they have only lost money in 1 quarter.

Yeah, the N64 was a massive success- but I had thought that in comparison to other consoles, the GameCube was something of a letdown. I was under the impression that once the initial "zomg new Nintendo console" wore off, it just sortof flopped.

In comparison to PS2, yes the Gamecube didn't do so well, but it did not lose money.

Remember, Microsoft lost over $1 Billion dollars on the original Xbox, yet Nintendo made money on the Gamecube on day 1 of the Gamecube. Same with every console/handheld they ever released.

Of course, PS2 made the most money lastgen, but the Gamecube in no way, lost money.
