The Week in Rock (Band DLC): Sorry, but Blondie doesn't qualify as classic rock

8:36 PM on 04.11.2008, Samit Sarkar 30 comments

     Xbox 360

Next week, it’ll be back to the older stuff, as Harmonix will be bringing us the “Classic Rock Pack 01”. I guess their definition of “classic rock” includes any music that uses guitars and was made before in or before 1980. But frankly, I wouldn’t really consider The Police or Blondie as part of that genre; when I think of classic rock, I usually start humming songs from artists like The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton.

However, Harmonix doesn’t give a damn about my opinion, unlike you guys (...right?). So they’ve lumped in those two bands with a classic rock staple, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The three songs on tap are Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” (1973), “Message in a Bottle” by The Police (1979), and Blondie’s “Call Me” (1980). Like Nick, I lament the continued lack of Journey, but I’m perfectly happy with these three master tracks.

This will all be available on Xbox Live next Tuesday, April 15th, and since the PlayStation Store will finally be updated next week, PS3 owners can get these three songs, along with the last two weeks of Rock Band DLC, on Thursday, April 17th. Each song will cost 160 Microsoft Points ($1.99), though as usual, you can pick up the three-song pack for 440 MS Points ($5.49). The press release is after the jump.

Actually, yeah, I'd say Blondie is classic rock. At least, they're about as classic as The Police.

I'm kinda over the classic rock. Those songs are way long and sometimes suck. Playing a 5 minute song that sucks..well..sucks.

As much as I love this pack "Classic" doesn't quite sell with me.

"Classic" would be Rolling Stones, The Who, and David Bowie. Just off the top of my head some bands I know they could get. Of course "New to RB" bands are welcome. For classic rock (within reason aka no Beatles or Zeppelin) I nominate Aerosmith, Queen, and AC/DC. I mean AC/DC isn't that "delicate" about licensing.

Well "Call Me" and "Message in a bottle" would be very nice to play, if Rockband was available was available and affordable in the EU ( 180€ for the instruments PLUS 69€ for the game, for a total of 249€ (393.9927 U.S. dollars), I mean I can almost buy a whole fucking PS3 PLUS game for that price in the USA!!! )

@mistic: Not quite. The cheapest PS3 in America, the 40 GB version, goes for $400, and it doesn’t come with a game.

As for me, since I was going to pick up the Skynyrd and Police songs anyway, I’ll just buy the whole pack.

@samit

not necessarily! if you buy it used on ebay you can get it for much cheaper :) i got a 60GB PS3 about 5 or 6 months ago for about $340, and i just picked up rock band for $80... $420 together... had i got them now, it could have been around $350 together, if not cheaper...

Who is sting blowing at Harmonix to get this much exposure? Sure, I like the police, but fuck, hook us up with some new bands that haven't been played yet.

Dude that song is the closest Blondie ever got to "classic rock" but also WAAAOOOO BLONDIE IS SO GOOD.

ok sorry, carry on.

(oh, and the article says "The Call" by Blondie-- should read "Call Me")

They can stop putting in Police songs as soon as they add in Every Breath You Take.

That is all.

Is it really that big of a deal that they're not classifying the songs under the genre you think it should be? My god.

Blondie started out as Punk Rock, believe it or not, before they went disco. LOOK IT UP LAZY ASSES.

They can stop putting in Police songs as soon as they add in Every Breath You Take.

Amen.

I call this the "Should Have Been Pack" because it Should Have Been "Blondie - Hangin' on the Telephone," "Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird," "The Police - Every Breath You Take."

Still buying the pack though :p

Yeah, a lot of bands that we no longer think of as "punk" actually started out in the early punk movement. Blondie, The Police, even U2. Frankly, I think those bands were more genuinely punk than the Ramones or the Sex Pistols.
