The Week in Rock (Band DLC): 'Smokin' Boston six song pack

5:11 PM on 03.21.2008, Nick Chester 28 comments

     Xbox 360

It looks like Harmonix wants to put the new Rock Band Music Store to the test next week, as they've announced the addition of six songs by the legendary rock group Boston. For those willing to pay, joining the Boston song that already appears on the retail disc ("Foreplay/Long Time") will be: "Hitch a Ride," "More Than a Feeling," Peace of Mind," "Rock & Roll Band," "Smokin'," and "Something About You."

Guitar Hero fans will recognize "More Than a Feeling," a cover version of which appeared in the 2005 hit game. In 2008, all of the Boston downloadable tracks are master versions, so purists should have nothing to complain about. Like the Grateful Dead six-pack, the songs can be purchased as a package for $9.99 (or 800 MS Points on the 360) or as individual tracks for $1.99 (or 160 MS Points on the 360).

Boston are a legendary arena rock n' roll band, and their songs should lend themselves well to any Rock Band set list. If you're not a Boston fan, though, you're out of luck. As usual, the tracks will hit Xbox LIVE next Tuesday and PlayStation Network on Thursday.

Hit the jump for some of my random thoughts on how Harmonix are releasing DLC. Or don't. I won't get mad!

I think I'll personally be picking up the tracks next week, but I'm starting to wish that each week brought not only more songs (three is starting to feel unacceptable for some reason), but more variety. I realize Harmonix probably doesn't want to empty the well too early, but choices with more variety each week could be a good idea. Pumping out theme- and band-specific packs each week is an interesting model, but if the theme or band doesn't hit home with some users, they might eventually tune out. While it's impossible to please everyone all of the time, it might help keep people interested (in spending money!) on a weekly basis.

What say you, mighty Destructoid community? Are you guys happy with how Harmonix have been handing out tiny slices of themed DLC weekly (perhaps allowing your wallet a break)? Or would you rather the selections be a bit more random, upping the chances of you wanting to buy at least one song out of a batch per week? Let us know, and since we don't make any of these decisions, it won't mean a thing ... but it'll be fun to argue about!

Oh, man...this is gonna be awesome. I was just listening to “More Than A Feeling” last night and was thinking, “This song would be great in Rock Band!” I will definitely be picking this up!

As for the post-jump portion of your post, I agree with you. I mean, yeah, it’s good for my wallet — this will be the first week since the middle of February, when I picked up “Interstate Love Song” and “El Scorcho”, that I’ll be giving EA/Harmonix my money. And I can understand their desire not to blow their wad early (they also probably want to keep themes and artists going, so they can do the song pack thing). But more variety would probably bring in more customers (as if they haven’t already gone sextuple platinum...).

I havent been too big on the theme packs. There hasn't really been a theme that I've been excited about.

Until now.

This is the best rock band news I've heard since the game released. I can't wait for next Thursday.

as long as the theme is interesting (and based on genre) I have no problem with it. Band packs aren't NORMALLY awesome, but the Boston pack gets a pass with me ^^

I don't mind the way that new tracks are released. I think it helps on 2 fronts. While they may not all be winners for me (and thus allowing me to let my wallet cool off) it does kinda give me a little hope that when they announce a band that I really do want, it will be fan-fucking-tastic!

Awesome.
I love the way Harmonix has been handeling the DLC. Hopefully they don't do something stupid to mess it up.

Personaly I really want them to fucking release this thing OUTSIDE North America... by the time Us Non-Yanks can get a hand on it for probably 250 € (which makes total sense, since the $ ain`t worth more than Turkmenistan Rubel anymore, but hey...) they will have Rock Band 2 announced already.

Anyways... at least it`s nice to see that they keep up with real good stuff for DLC.

The theme/band packs have kept me from purchasing anything for nearly 2 months now.
Not that I have a problem with that (I dropped nearly 30 bucks when DLC was finally released in Canada), but yeah, if they mixed things up I'd be more likely to buy on a weekly basis.
