The Week in Rock (Band DLC): I must be woefully out of touch with the cool kids photo

Two weeks have gone by since Harmonix rocked our world with the first full album of Rock Band DLC, and it appears that they’ve exhausted their lineup of “triple-A” songs that everyone has been requesting. So instead of more Judas Priest, some Muse, or, I don’t know, anything else, we’re stuck with two songs I’ve never heard of, and one lackluster song by one of my favorite bands.

Next week, Harmonix will be bringing you “Date With The Night” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and “It Hurts” by Angels & Airwaves, two songs that I’m not familiar with. And to be quite honest, after listening to 30-second snippets of them on iTunes, I’m glad that I’m not familiar with those songs.

The third track is Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race”, the hit debut single for their third full-length album, 2007’s Infinity On High. Now, I’m a huge Fall Out Boy fan (yeah, yeah...sue me) — I have been since Take This To Your Grave way back in 2003 — but really, I could think of about ten songs of theirs off the top of my head that I’d rather play in Rock Band. Oh, well...at least they’re all master tracks.

Anyway, the songs will be available, as usual, on Xbox Live next Tuesday (May 6th) and on the PlayStation Network next Thursday (May 8th). The standard pricing is in effect; each song will cost you $1.99 (160 MS Points), or you can pick up the three-song pack for $5.49 (440 MS Points). Hit the jump for the press release. And if, for some crazy reason, you’re actually interested in the Fall Out Boy figurines pictured above, you can order them online for the low, low price of £44.77 (that’s almost $90)!

ROCK BAND™ Media Alert

FALL OUT BOY, YEAH YEAH YEAHS AND ANGELS & AIRWAVES MAKE THE SCENE WITH ROCK BAND

Harmonix and MTV Games announced today the latest additions to the ROCK BAND™ downloadable content catalog: a “Scene Pack” featuring Fall Out Boy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Angels & Airwaves. Fall Out Boy, who already have a track (“Dead On Arrival” from debut album Take This To Your Grave) in the game, add a second song to the ROCK BAND™ track listing with 2007’s hit single “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race.” Yeah Yeah Yeahs (who also have a track in the game with “Maps” from debut disc Fever To Tell) add a second track from that album with “Date With The Night.” Angels & Airwaves, the band founded by former blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge, make their ROCK BAND™ debut with “It Hurts” from 2006’s We Don’t Need To Whisper. Each track will be available for $1.99 per track (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) for the three-pack.

Release date:
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 (Xbox LIVE® Marketplace)
Thursday, May 8, 2008 (PLAYSTATION®Store)

Tracks:
“This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race” (Fall Out Boy)
“Date With The Night” (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
“It Hurts” (Angels & Airwaves)

(All three tracks utilize the original master recordings)

Price:
$5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) per pack or $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) per track

Locations:
Xbox LIVE® Marketplace and PLAYSTATION®Network

** Dates for Rock Band game tracks are tentative and subject to change **

I was a tester on the original JUICED for four LOOONG months. "Date with the night" was one of the five songs available in an early build of the game. I swore I would gouge my ear drums out rather than listen to that song again...but my girlfriend has been waiting for some more songs with female vocals (such as they are) so looks like I'll have to drum with gritted teeth.

....even if I had Rock Band, I don't quite think i'd want Fall out boy. The band that apparently were sell outs (or so my friend says.)

Either way, i'm not big on rock and whatnot, but I hear enough Fall out boy on the radio and at work. Don't wanna hear it when I start playing Rock Band.

Personally, I'm glad it's NOT Judas Priest. Muse would have been welcome though.

Also, "Date with the Night" is an awesome song.

Actually, I wouldn't mind some more Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They're the only indie-esque band I can stand listening to.

Honestly I can't believe that Samit likes Fall Out Boy. I mean, you read someone's Internet posts for a while, and feel like you get to know them, and them BAM, they've got terrible taste in music.

Oh well, guess I'll be picking up "Date with the Night"

@everyone: Whatever. Apparently, admitting that you like Fall Out Boy is like suicide nowadays, and I never like being one of the people who go, “I LISTENED TO THEM BEFORE THEY SOLD OUT” — because frankly, I hate the term “sell out”. If you’re one of those self-conscious “underground” or “indie” types who’ll stop listening to a band just because they sold a few million copies of their latest record and your mom’s singing their hit single in the shower, then you can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.

Sure, being a struggling artist is an admirable concept — but it’s only admirable from the outside. If you’re in the music business, you’re almost certainly there to make money (I’m not saying that’s the only reason people get into it, but it’s usually a big part of it).

Fall Out Boy didn’t change their sound to “go mainstream” or anything, and in fact, their musical stylings have evolved since their first album. Don’t discount my (or anyone else’s) taste in music just because they like a popular band — everyone has a few guilty pleasures (though again, I don’t feel guilty at all about liking Fall Out Boy).

@Samit:

Well said my man! I too hate people who say "I liked them before they were big" because they are just pretentious fools who care more about what others think of them then what they think of themselves.

Every band wants to make it big so they can make a living off their music and people who don't support them when or if they do make the big time are not real fans of them or their music in the first place.

I wouldn't say FOB have necessarily sold out but they (or at least Pete Wentz) seem to be more about the MTV celebrity life style more than they used to be, even when compared to the "under the cork tree" days....

Back on topic though Date with the night is an awesome song and one that should be great fun on Rock Band and This ain't a scene... may not be one of the strongest tracks for the game it's one of my fav FOB tracks (yes I'm a fan as well, not a huge one though) A&A is meh though but still better than Judas Priest imo

I can't say i've ever heard of much of Fallout Boy's stuff, so I can't rightly say whether I like them or not.

But what I can say is that radio/tv edits of songs irritate the hell out of me. I do like a very large variety of music on my Rock Band - but I think that if this Fallout Boy is edited to remove the "god" from "damn" then I will skip it.

That irritates the hell out of me about the GH Franchise and Rock Band. They have free will to change the rating on the game, just use the original lyrics.

@Dennen: I hate edited versions of anything, too, but don’t forget: they want to sell as many copies of a game as possible, and an ‘M’ rating can be a real turn-off to parents looking to pick up a game (of course, there’s also the whole people-under-17-can’t-buy-M-rated-games thing).

@Samit: Yeah I see the money made in selling outside of an M rating. But does a single word such as "God" or "Damn" cause enough ruckus to rate it M? Naah. I'd say a Teen rating at highest. And Teen rating means "Titles in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language." - Rock Band also is rated Teen

So i'd say the songs should not be edited to remove curse words. Or at the very least, offer a filter for parents who do not want kids to hear.

@Dennen: I can’t think of any T-rated games that would get away with lines like I wish I was special / You’re so fucking special. And while a filter or option to turn explicit songs on or off is a good idea in theory, I don’t think it’s as simple as that — i.e., they’d have to include two versions of explicit songs (one edited, one unedited) on the disc. And I think that’s more trouble than it’s worth for EA/Harmonix.

Samit, let me explain why most people don't like Fallout Boy. It's not because they "Sold out." Otherwise people wouldnt like Radiohead. Radiohead makes tons of money, but they make good music. No, the reason people don't like Fallout Boy is because they suck.

What exactly is offensive about I wish I was special / You’re so fucking special?? Is it the use of the word fuck?? Have these people been raised in a closet by nuns?? Watch out when you go outside teenagers, people use words that will not be censored by your local concerned adult.

I never really thought about song editing to take out 'offensive' language, makes me less inclined to get Rock Band, I want to play the song as it was recorded, not as it was edited to protect people from words that have been somehow imbued with a mystical level of badness by the morally retarded.

Also, Fall Out Boy is just plain bad.

I'm gonna put it out there that Fall Out Boy are a very guilty pleasure of mine. That being said, their newest cd is the punishment from an angry god. They went from "kinda catchy" to grating in one cd. And they somehow got more popular from it.
"This Ain't a Scene..." is a horrible song as well. FOB are the last people who should be criticizing the now shittyness of the emo scene seeing as they are part of the problem. Cursive did it bigger and much better with "Art is Hard".
/end tangent.

I will be buying the Yeah Yeah Yeahs song though.
Hopefully my roomates won't bitch too much about having to play it.

"Date with the Night" is the first song I ever heard from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and it introduced me to what is easily one of my favorite bands right now. It's a definiite purchase for me (would have loved to have had the whole Fever to Tell album, though I guess that doesn't have a huge chance at happening). Though it will be odd when I try it on vocals, because of the orgasm part and me being a dude and all.

Also, about the game's using radio edit versions of songs... play vocals and you can swear up a storm if you want. No punishment if you do. Everyone I know does. So feel free to add in some of your favorite explitives if you'd like! Especially in Wanted Dead or Alive.

"I've seen a million faces, and I fucked them all!"
