As you may have heard, MotorStorm was recently delayed and then officially crippled from a 1080p 60 FPS pie-in-the-sky to a 720p 30 FPS reality. One of the comments by Toneman in the discussion pretty much sums up my thoughts: in the back of our minds, we all knew it was coming. So what does the new game look like? ThreeSpeech released a handful of new screenshots this week that look just as good as the stills from months before. Only one question remains ... but does it suck? Fingerpointing to other disappointments and ranting in various directions follow below.
While it must be a huge ego blow for Sony to accept the system's development liminations for a first generation game, I commend them for doing the right thing. If you reference checks their asses coudn't cash by executive marketing spokesmen you love to hate, this game isn't "true HD" anymore -- their tails must be nailed between their legs on this one.
On the bright side, we're better off with a game that has solid frame rates and solid multiplayer than a gloriously pretty slow game only supported by less than 10% of consumer televisions. That's not to say we won't ever see true 1080p games that deliver cinematic experiences. It just won't happen any time soon, judging by this title.
As for the
MotorStorm chapter of this saga, it seems we'll have to wait until March to get our muddy little fingers on it. The game has good odds of becoming a breakaway hit, even if it's not the show pony Sony sold it out to be. We are also waiting with arms wide open and feet furiously tapping for a
Killzone announcement of the same vein. If they prove me wrong, I will run into a bingo hall and do the hokey pokey on a table. I've always wanted to do that, and just might regardless.
THIS IS THE FUTURE!
eh... I might play it.
Why is gaming getting so friggin expensive... I don't have a 360 yet, and I'm hoping for a price drop, its gonna cost me $500 to play Halo3 (being a sucker for the legendary pack).
That probably won't happen considering none of my friends own a PS3...
Nice to see the game has a Lancia Delta Integrale, All it needs now is some sense of speed and rumble would be nice too. All that rugged terrain can't feel to smooth.
Motorstorm is the Next-Gen Excitebike
no lag multiplay and realistic mud :D
plus...laughs
simple, because the game compnies are trying to market new technology far too quickly... if microsoft and sony waited a few more years the market their new consoles, we might be seeing the same console only $100-200 cheaper. I mean, let's look at the wii, graphic and power wise, the thing is much weaker than the 360 or PS3, it's only a little better than the gamecube... as for the wiimote, i think the technology to create such a thing has been around for a while, it's just that no one decided to pursue such a thing... In the end, by not seeling the most gorund breaking technology, the wii can be sold at a relativly low price; as opposed to the 360 and PS3 which are trying to market the lastest technology before it can become cheaper to make and thus lead to high price tags.
If you think PS3 and the 360 are hitting the market too quickly, then don't buy it. Obviously there are those out there who are willing to pay through the nose to get the stuff, but I'm definately not in that number, and I'm perfectly happy about it.
My PS2 still has a lot of life left in it.
Of course it doesn't have the online multiplayer, but that should be the only difference between the two versions.

I read the COD3 Review and compared to the 360 version it the PS3 stumbled in graphically intense areas. I think there really is alot of truth to the PS3's video card lacking bandwidth. There was talk before the launch that PS3's graphics card couldn't handle as much 1080P as Sony touted the "Cell" was capable of. This is another intance of Sony Hype.
Sony: "Cell can do this, but we forgot to mention the video cad has trouble keeping up !"
They too also couldn't have expected developers to get round 8 (?) cores to balance the workload which on their competitors machines was pretty much a second thought.
Perhaps the recent spate of delays is an indication of Sony working closer and with improved SDK tools to clear up these issues. However, forgetting the misty future where everyone predicts Sony dominance will return. If they don't manage to clear up these performance problems in six months why would anyone really consider doing much more than ports on the system.
Just to add information not demonstrated by previous posters (as a ps3 holder)... I want to add that the kiosks are horrendous. They have the ability to go online and update/download new demos and videos, but do they... no.
The point of this is, and it doesn't get much press. Your demo version of Motorstorm which you play at the kiosk is different then the version I or my intrepid ps3 owners download from the ps3 store. No different options or tracks, but just a much more impressive build. Graphically it is more solid, runs faster (framerate wise, load still bites), and is just generally a bit more fun.
I look forward to this game incredibly, but am skeptical about level design. I love the "concept" of mudding as much as anyone else, but I'll need variety to keep me playing.
Thanks for popping my destructoid cherry.
Can't wait for this game.
And remember that the only multiplayer available is online. The developers admitted they couldn't get split screens running at 720p/30fps.
