The wacky minigames of Virtua Tennis 3 photo

A few months ago, the thought of a tennis video game did not automatically fill your brain with flying remotes and sore elbows (for those that didn't get The Memo). So how does a tennis game compete without carpel tunnel action?  Do what comes natural: just play with your balls when you're by yourself!  This is the case with Virtua Tennis 3, the high def followup to the amazing Dreamcast franchise from Sega. Apparently there's more to this game than sweat and visible neck veins -- there are super wacky mini games filled with ultraviolence

We've spotted five of these so far, which you can view in high definition in the gallery below.  Among them is target training game, similar to a dart board or the skydiving stage from Pilotwings. In this game, ball machines pelt you and you try to bounce the ball off the floor. Ok, rough start. Next! The second seems less boring, as is consists of you vs. an army of megaball cannons.  The implied goal, judging by the tennis court explosion, is to attempt to blow these things up with a succession of backhands. Hopefully McEnroe is a selectable character in this game.  Next!  Knock down stacked barrels, Street Fighter 2 bonus stage style ... Next! Here we have a bowling pin setup ... sigh ... NEXT!

Jackpot! Now we have a winner -- they've been smoking Katamari and lost their minds. For some reason, there is a level in Virtua Tennis 3 where you must avoid fruit and large balls coming out to get you, just like I used to do on South Beach when I was in shape. I'm not sure what else they snuck in there, but it's very nice to see more than viagra-laced graphics showing up on the court.  The game should be bouncing in sometime around the second quarter of 2007.

I love it when game designers are clearly on drugs while producing their games. It makes for some of the best play experiences.

I've never had the opportunity to play Virtua Tennis, but everyone seems to have nothing but good things about it to say. What made the game so great?
