While working on the most epic YTMND ever this past Thursday, I came across this YTMND that had the comic seen above. Who would have ever guessed that Sonic is blue because of the cobalt effect! You know, the cobalt effect! It's when shock waves hit you when you smash into the sound barrier, duh!

Apparently, this comic also explains the origins of Dr. Robotnik. Which happens by the doctor holding an egg and getting hit by lightning ...

What do you think? Do you like being given some kind of official back story to your favorite characters no matter how stupid the truthiness is? Or do you just not give a damn?

Also, Rrrriiccccooo Sssuaavvee.

(Update: Forgot to thank Heywood for showing me the comic. Also, thanks to Zero_Tolo and Heywood for showing us the the full back story of the comic. Still looking for the rest of the comic pages though!)

This is pretty cool actually, despite how corny it is. I wonder where it came from. Gamepro?

Ya, I guess I should mention that if anyone out there knows where this came from, or where we can view the rest of the comic, please let us know!

He apparently was also a porcupine in his pre-blue life.

How does the cobalt effect work when you aren't actually moving?

Heywood, that can't be it. The Sonic on that cover is quite a bit different than the one from the panel. Plus, there are other Sonic comics.

IIRC that comic was an advertisement for Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis.

I think it was found in the old Archie published Sonic comic as well as others.

Hate to piss in everyone's cereal but here's a link to a site that gives the details for the comic and what it says.

Magesx, it's the right comic. From the Sonic the comic wiki-

" This origin story established that Sonic was originally a normal brown hedgehog, who burrowed his way into the underground laboratory of Dr. Ovi Kintobor, a scientist who wished to rid the planet Mobius of all evil through the use of powerful gems called the Chaos Emeralds. In addition, he helped Sonic increase his running speed using a special treadmill, until the hedgehog eventually broke the sound barrier with a sonic boom which turned him blue. However, an accident involving the unstable Chaos Emeralds and a rotten egg transformed Kintobor into the evil Dr Ivo Robotnik, leading to the events of the games Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The accident consisted of Kintobor accidentally knocking over a bottle of lemonade into a machine he was working on, that had the emeralds inside (while holding the egg), while he was explaining to Sonic what he was doing.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. In the last frame of that page it says. "Doc created a snazzy pair of frictionless shoes for me to wear!" Now I may still be in High School, but wouldn't it be hard to run if there was no friction? Just figure I'd point that out.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. In that whole page, the hedgehog is talking. Now, I may still be in High School, but wouldn't it be hard to talk if you were a hedgehog? Just figure I'd point that out.

Nothing ruins a fantasy creation like trying to paste on pseudo-science.

I must say, though, that it makes overly pretentious science-fiction movies entertaining. "The Core" was hilarious -- probably the best worst movie ever made.

I had that comic when I was a young 'un. It wasn't the one posted above though. Then again, since I live in Australia, that's to be expected. I think it came free with a gamne magazine.

I have this comic somewhere in my house. I've had for as long as I can remember and I have no idea where it came from. It's a thick book with some interviews and some sonic stories. One of them is this one but a little changed and drawn a lot better. If I can find it I'll scan it but my last attempt was unsuccessful.

I believe it's from an old EGM. Though don't quote me on that. I remember having it, it was a two page spread on some game mag and the only subscriptions we had back then were EGM and Nintendo Power. Though we did buy the occasional GamePro(but I really don't believe it was in there).

The comic was made by sega and sen out to be published on it own to go with your copy of sonic 1 at launch then it was sent to other publications.

This is the original comic I posted above, it came out 2 weeks before sonic 1 on genesis did.

the dude at counter said they was free even though it said a $1.50 on it, I think he was just being nice though and gave me some.
