The Telegraph's top fifty games of 2008 list is actually interesting photo

UK newspaper The Telegraph has listed its top fifty games of 2008, dubbing this the "year we all became gamers." While one can question that statement, considering some of the "games" these newbies are playing can hardly qualify for the label, The 'Graph has still provided a fairly interesting and unpredictable list.

Interesting because Lionhead's Fable 2 has won the crown. While a rather good game and one of the Xbox 360's premier titles, it's not one you'd expect to see top a year of blockbusters such as GTA IV, MGS4 and Gears of War 2. In fact, this whole list is not what you'd expect at all from a mainstream British newspaper. It even has No More Heroes in the top ten!

Speaking of top ten, here is The Telegraph's for 2008:

  1. Fable 2
  2. Fallout 3
  3. LittleBigPlanet
  4. Rock Band 2
  5. Gears of War 2
  6. Spore
  7. Grand Theft Auto IV
  8. No More Heroes
  9. Left 4 Dead
  10. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
The end of the year is often a hotbed of predictable articles, as people rattle off near-identical lists of games we knew would be there anyway. For The Telegraph, then, to pull a swerve and list games you'd never expect them to have even heard of, is rather refreshing. Enjoy it while you can, it's not often we read a mainstream press article from someone who's played Professor Layton, let alone named it as one of the year's best titles.

Slightly out of order list, but I'm not gonna complain!

Even though I didn't like about half the games on the list, it's still got more games on it that I liked than most of the "best of 2008" lists I've seen.

Is is wrong that I just can't get exited for Fallout3 or Fable 2? Some times I feel like i'm gonna get hardcore gamer pass taken away from me with my feelings on those.

Western RPGS always feel like there is way to much to do and none of it feels important enough or weel done to want to do any of it...I appreciate what both games are doing, just not for me..maybe when a lull hits I'll play them.

Fable 2 being at the top of this list automatically negates the rest of the list. It's a decent game, but the best of the year? No.

Then again, this year was somewhat underwhelming, so I guess it's all relative.

don't belong on the list @ all
Civilization Revolution
LEGO Batman
The World Ends With You
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
some others I am not so sure about, but haven't played- though all in all what was supposed to be a pretty damn stellar year for releases blanded out due to activision dropping so many good games right before release

I don't really agree with Fable 2 being the best game of 2008 (even though it was definitely good, there were too many glitches\bugs to call it the best), but it’s a fair list otherwise.

yeah. I'm gonna agree with zarathustra. I wouldn't og as far as saying it was a decent game though. I think it was pretty disappointing.

Yeah, I'm with Ceark and Zarathustra. The list itself isn't that bad but the order is weird. Also no MGS4, what's up with that? Didn't Burnout came out this year? Oh damn, more and more games that were great didn't make the list. Forget what I said. The list itself sucks.

I adored Fable 2, but it's definitely not GotY. A solid entry for the top 10, yeah, but it's far too buggy to take the top spot itself.

It's always interesting to see what the more mainstream non-gaming outlets come up with.

24. LocoRoco 2

This was an interesting choice to be here to me. I liked it, but I never expected it to be in a list like this.

I'm sorry to see Spore on there, but the list is good otherwise. I'm glad Left 4 Dead got recognition.

That's quite a good list. I'm not so sure about Fable being at the top but then again I haven't played it.... maybe now's the time.

man No More Heroes crushes Fable II like it's papercraft. Heck, even MGS4 does.
