The Super Game Boy Super Nintendo controller photo

Here's something that I never knew existed even though I grew up working in a videogame store for a better part of my life. It's called the Super Game Boy Commander and was a controller for the Super Nintendo. More specifically, it was a controller themed after the original Game Boy to be used with the Super Game Boy adapter for the Super Nintendo. Super.

This controller, from what I can tell, was made for no good reason at all. TinyCartridge believes it was made for people that couldn't play anything Game Boy on the SNES unless they were able to feel speaker vents under the two main buttons. Sounds like a good reason to me.

Whatever the case, you can buy a brand new Commander for only $19.90 over on NCSX. Not bad for all you retro collectors out there.

so... it's just a SNES controller that looks like a gameboy? useless indeed, collectors will enjoy it though.

Interesting. Could be useful for games requiring six face buttons, like fighters.

Do kind of want. But I'm not sure spending $20 on something I'd never use is very wise. At least the rest of the collectible crap I've spent money on I've used at one point or another.

I don't remember the SNES pad controls, but do those buttons actually work? I remember it had two of GB's A or B and then there was one for the menu and...something. Hrmm.

That controller is a Sp--er, is unnerving. Boxy shape and no shoulder buttons? O_o

At a gaming shop earlier today, I found a one-handed PS1 controller I never knew about, yet didn't pick it up. This I could really use, though.

I have the one hand PS1 controller, the ASCI Grip. Perfect for playing RPGs and drinking beer.

From Wikipedia: "In Japan, Hori released a special Super Game Boy controller called the SGB Commander. The controller, aside from the 4 Game Boy buttons (A, B, Start and Select), also had 4 Super Game Boy specific buttons which could enable the user to mute the sound, increase or reduce the speed of the game, change the colors and modify the display window. An additional switch is provided to alternate between Super Game Boy mode and Super Famicom Mode."

From what I had heard about this controller, the speed setting is not a rapid fire start button. This controller is actually allowed to access and change the cpu clock speed of the Super Gameboy, making the game run faster or slower. Very interesting, but that's pretty expensive for me.
