Do you remember the 80's video game cartoon that blew away the competition ... then jumped the shark (The Gameboy character) and killed it for all future generations? Captain N [ Wikipedia ] was the essential Nintendo-based video game cartoon and we ate it up. My best friend even renamed his dog to Duke -- this was powerful voodoo. An awful crackling video of the show's TV-sucking intro and nine pages of the backstory of Captain N after the jump.
Here's the show's intro. Doesn't CTZ's signature laugh sound just like Mother Brain? You can be the judge of that.
However, the Captain N we experienced is rumored to have been quite different than what was ultimately produced on the show. Christopher D. found "a nine chapter story about the man who practically invented Captain N, although it turned out very different from his original design. But it is also a story of all the things he did while working at Nintendo Power magazine, about how he turned incoming letters and phone calls from fans into marketing information, about the fights he had with who I assume to be Gail Tilden, about the difficulties of working an American branch of a Japanese company, about helping a child with cancer get an advance copy of a popular NES game, and about after leaving Nintendo and being the main designer of an NES game called Power Blade"
One must wonder what could have happened to the show if had gone the direction of the Valiant comics, whom offered a more serious storyline (a-la first season of Ninja Turtles before that also went suckville) but never gained momentum in the shadow of the cartoon's ridiculous image. We'll never know, but I'm still waiting for a killer Captain N game to come out. Princess Lana, you're the only woman who can pull off purple like that.
