[Editor's note: pedrovay2003 tells us what started his affair for June's Monthly Musings topic. -- CTZ

pedrovay2003's note: This is NOT an attempt to steal dvddesign's idea. I have been wanting to do this all day today, but I had to work and just barely got to my computer. I loved his blog, and it made me feel the rush of my childhood coming back to me, for which I thoroughly thank him. Besides, I wanted to talk more about Duck Hunt than Mario.

You kids today and your fancy graphics, your 3D games, and your dual-joysticks. Back in my day, when Pluto was a planet and we had real games, there was Super Mario Bros, the platformer that started it all. The fat plumber brought videogames back into the world, but not alone --- He had his legion of gun-fodder ducks and his demon-possessed bloodhound to give him a hand. Oh, and Luigi, too.  I started playing this dual-game game when I was 2-years-old, and I've been gaming ever since.

I always kind of considered the original NES to be a Birthday present to me from Nintendo --- It came out like a week after I was born, and up until recently, I still had it, along with the controllers and Zapper, in the original box. I remember sitting in front of my TV in the basement playing both games that came with the NES for hours on end, never wanting to get up. I didn't have to think about anything else when I was playing --- It was my escape from school and whatever else was stressing me out (couldn't be much, just school, probably).

The original Super Mario Bros. was an inspiration for pretty much everything on the NES, and probably about 80% of what was on the SNES years later. Hell, I still think that game is the reason we still have excellent sidescrollers today. Not only that, but it's held up very, very well --- It was the first Virtual Console game I downloaded on the Wii, and it plays just as well as it did 20 years ago. I still load it up and play for hours, even after all this time.

However, as much as I liked Mario, I think I actually played Duck Hunt even more. Probably because my dad would always play it with me, and we'd just sit there forever, and I'd stare in awe at how my dad would never miss. Seriously, he wouldn't. Every shot would be a hit, and that's why I played so much --- I wanted to be as good as he was. But you can't just pick something up and expect to win every time. Remember this screen?

Yeah. I really, really wished you could shoot him. I still kinda do, actually. Oh, wait a minute... you can!

I also really enjoyed playing the Clay Pigeon Shooting portion of the game, too. While it was basically the same concept as shooting ducks, the clay pigeons would get smaller if you took too long to shoot them, making the game even harder. After I got good at the ducks (which I just barely found out last year can be controlled with the second controller), I spent all my time on the clay pigeons, but I still never got as good at those.

That's why I liked the Shooting Range portion of Wii Play --- While it wasn't nearly as magical as Duck Hunt / Clay Pigeon Shooting, it was still a pretty cool, graphically updated version of the original game. I still like to play it for nothing but the nostalgia value, and to see the ducks flying across the screen. You can even hear the dog in the background when the ducks are about to come out.

Looking back now, I still can't believe it's been 20 years. I love our current games and consoles, don't get me wrong --- But back then, life was good. No "console wars," no fanboys, no deciding which systems to buy. It was the Nintendo Entertainment System, the one and only, and you got games to play right out of the box. I grew up with Nintendo, and whenever I think of videogames, it isn't Wii or the 360 or the PS3 that I think of, it's the NES, and it's Super Mario Bros., and it's a load of ducks. And it's one sadistic dog that --- while I hated him as a kid --- I would never want to forget now.

Please, enjoy some Duck Hunt if you have the time. It's not the same as playing it with a gun, but everything's still there.

It's funny how all us "old folks" had to slip in a "you damn kids" jab in our Start of the Affairs post.

Heh, it's so true. Kids haven't got it nearly as good these days as we did growing up.

@ pedrovay2003

i know man, in my post i talked briefly about how they get sick of games so quick

back then, man, games had a shelflife. you could play them over and over again. these days they are too long and they have too much crap filler and STORY and cutscenes that get boring after the first time. and NO CHALLENGE. might as well hold a controller and watch a damn movie. sad stuff.

I hear ya about shelf-life deal, man.
I still vividly remember getting Double Dragon for the NES, as a gift after swim lessons. I also will never, ever forget how got damn difficult the game was. It was lacking the cool graphics and co-op mode from the arcade and it was also ten times as hard, yet we still played it and played it and played it. Why? Because that's about all we had, at the time!
Good god, we have it so nice now.

Never really thought about the shelf-life thing. Man, we'd play games dozen of times, and never complain about a lack of "New Game+" or bonus shit you'd get for beating the game X amount of times. We did it because we loved the game.

...or because we only had 5 games at the time.

But still!

how wicked would that have been to have DLC back then though... for games like River City Ransom; forgetaboutit!

No fanboys? You and your sissy-ass NES. You might as well get your hand stamped to Club Pussé because you know you go back there. The Amiga had arcade-style graphics and a better slew of games.

Quoted for truth! I got new games few and far between, so they were played multiple times. I miss old games. I think the gaming community as a whole just doesn't know how to appreciate the games they have.

And we had to walk 5 miles in the snow bare foot to buy our games from Kmart with a bag of pennies we had been saving!

Duck hunt promotes violence against ducks and is in-humane.

IT SHOULD OF BEEN BANNED

I personally blame this game for Ducks around the world being blown out of the sky with guns.

This evil propoganda is sickening.

It trains kids up to and warps there mind into shooting ducks in real life. It is an animal murder simulator.

Such filth!!!!

Damn kids! Do they know how much we had to pay for a new game back then? Well I'll tell ya, it was $50! Back in the 80's that was a lot of coin. ($107 today) Maybe maybe your allowance was $5. Older brother have a job? So what, he didn't play your games. You had to work and mov lawns and save and save and save. It took FOREVER for games to come down in price, and it was NEVER below $20.

I went back to play this a few weeks ago, thinking I'll get a little time in with it.

I spent 2 fucking hours on it 'til I got to the kill screen. Such an amazing game.

Great writeup. I used to play Duck Hunt with my friend almost every day back when we were still in elementary school. It was a classic then but we still loved it.

I got an NES with SMB/Duck Hunt when I was 4 and it was also the start of my life long affair. Since games were new to me, I actually physically jumped when Mario did the first couple times I played. Anyone else do that?

As nice of a write-up as this is, I think it was a mistake to promote it so early. As Rev said in his Monthly Musings post, a lot of people will probably have this as a topic and only the best of the best should've been promoted. It's only the 4th of June and one of the most talked about topics is already taken.

Also, I fail at the flash version. Gonna have to visit a friend who still owns the NES and Duck Hunt to see if my skills have truly grown so sucky.

Wait, you can control the ducks?!?! My brothers and I always (impatiently) waited to shoot next whenever we played, none of us even bothered touching the second controller. I'm going to have to toss Duck Hunt into the NES and check out out...

Yeah though, that split cart got tons of play when I was little, Mario & Duck Hunt both... I preferred the skeet shooting in Duck Hunt, I don't know why but I just played it more than the actual duck hunting portion. I love how everybody hated the dog and shot at him, regardless of how futile you knew it was. Wanting to kill that dog is like some kind of NES rite of passage...

Yes, it was the first game I played as well, but it's not what totally made me realize that video games were for me, If you want to find that out check my blog.

braulio09: That shouldn't stop anyone from talking about the same subject if something was already taken.

Plus, your argument basically means I should wait two to three weeks to promote anything. From all the amount of blogs on this topic, I'm going to be promoting two stories at least from here on out (if the trend of when these goes up continues)

Oh God, if that had been one of the first games I ever played then I would have given up on video games altogether right then and there. Nuff said about that game, lets just move on /shutters

Yup. This was pretty much the start of it all. Only difference is that I had the SMB/DuckHunt/WCTM cart instead. Playing Mario more that I've ever played any game, shooting the dog and slapping on the power pad with my hands as fast as I could... Oh the memories bring a tear to my eyes.
