The StarCraft II beta won't be ready until next year photo

Another story related to a Blizzard game where a time far off from the present is discussed? Uh huh. The two themes have become so intertwined with one another that it isn't even disappointing to hear anymore; it's simply the norm.

The StarCraft II beta, which we foolishly expected to go public this year, has been shoved into 2010. This news was confirmed by producer Chris Sigaty at a Russian videogame expo called IgroMir. I didn't know such a convention existed, but with a name like that, I'll be sure to never forget.

With more time on Blizzard's side, perhaps we will see the inclusion of the StarCraft II map editor in the beta after all? Fully expect me to take your silence as a "yes," guys.

As much as announcements like this are frustrating to hear, I'd rather more companies take Blizzard's approach of putting out games when they are ready rather than trying to hit deadlines and looking for the most effective sell dates. At least when we finally get it we know it will be a quality product rather than some half-finished glitchy mess. I wish more companies would take their cues from Blizzard and Valve.

While you have a good point, that's always been the way Blizzard has approached games and the same could be said for others that have managed the same. They have the quality products they've made in general pay the bills for them. There are a lot of MMOs, but whether you love it or hate it, WoW is well crafted to be as popular as it is.

I hope they remake Zerg during this time... or all of the tech trees. So far things just don't look too promising/interesting.

How hard can it be to take Starcraft 1 and just up the graphics? There honestly is very little here (from what I've seen announced) that is a dramatic change of formula. The fact it's taking so long, and just for ONE campaign is really mind boggling.
I guess they have to keep pumping out those WoW expansions every year instead. Money (or should I say daddy Activision) talks...

WoW WAS a well crafted game...

now it is just crafted-well... to get money out of pockets.

After just playing some Dragon age, a game that had such a tight release schedule that they couldn't even give the localization teams a description of what the mage's spells do, I am a bit more sympathetic.

Not only do they have WoW paying the bills, they also have all the smaller devs they've devoured over the years manning the assembly line.

Fun fact: No Blizzard games have ever been released. We've all been part of the same mass hysteria where we want the so badly that we imagine that they're out. Your raid buddies in WoW? Those are the cockroaches that have taken up living in your slack-jawed mouth as you paw vacantly at a broken monitor.

Pro-tip: Most of the money WoW generates goes to server maintenance, Game Master paychecks, and upgrades to Battle.Net systems.

I'm just pretending that this game doesn't exist until it's actually released.

@Char Aznable: Me too, I have gotten to the point where I don't care anymore. I won a beta invite from the twitter thing, and they sent me an email last week confirming I am in the pool for invites, now they say I have to wait longer. Oh well, I have Modern Warfare 2 until then.
