The soon to be extinct 80GB PS3: an analyst's take on the situation photo

In wake of yesterdays rumor that Best Buy was phasing out all its remaining 80GB PlayStation 3s in favor of the crippled 40GB version comes word that another "unnamed retailer" has given the solemn nod that the writing on the wall is indeed more fact than fiction. To quote GameDaily's source, "Something is afoot, but cannot be discussed any further until the remaining 80GB PS3s are gone."

Why is Sony going from multiple SKUs to a single, no frills version of the PS3? If you ask Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey, it has much to do with that scary "recession" word that's been making heavy rotation on the news waves for a while:

"A recessionary environment will likely punctuate the 80GB version's relative and absolute retail sales disappointment. The recently released 40GB version is getting traction at retail, suggesting backward compatibility takes a backseat to the console's price point for current buyers."

So where does Sony go from here? Are they going to introduce yet another confusing SKU to the market (with a larger hard drive), or just stick with the 40GB that sells -- and makes those of us who cherish backwards compatibility continue to keep their PS2s connected to the entertainment center.

We're not exactly sure if the sudden interest is due to the fact that the PS3 has finally started releasing "must have" games, the price cut, or both. We do know that you might want to think about purchasing one of those more expensive 80GB models while they still exist.

Failure to act now is only going to make it more painful, as the eBay auctioneers profit by your hesitation. The PS3 is a fantastic beast of a console (it doesn't break every 2 months!), and wasn't meant to be stripped of its features. You won't regret spending the extra cash, and adding it to your collection.

[Thanks, Jonathan]

My experience with the backwards compatibility so far was loading up GTA San Andreas, starting at the bike mission, and saying to myself "Meh, do I really want to go through this a third time?"

Uh... Crunshii I wasn't demanding BC. I just think this whole thing is a setup for a new SKU and people crying about the death of BC are being hysterical.

I've got my PS2, so I'm covered on that front. When it eventually dies, I'll probably be able to use a PS2 emu. BFD.

But go ahead and panic and spend $600. Whatever..

I don't think backwards compatibility is that important. If you want to play PS2 games just play them on your PS2 or go buy a used one for very cheap.

Hopefully this is a sign for another price drop.

I still need to save up and find a 60GB unit. I demand full BC. I saw the upscaling, and it's really nice.

I have an original with BC. I swopped my 60gb drive for a 250 drive around three months ago. I wouldn't be surprised that the 80gb was not selling so well because most 40gb buyers are thinking the same thing - buy a bigger drive when they are ready for it.

I don't care about BC. I rarely use it on the 360, and i have both the Xbox and PS2. I think what most people object to, is that Sony relentlessly pushed their machine with the promise of BC, and picked up Microsoft because they couldn't manage 100% BC. Now, they say "oh well no-one cares about BC".

Me, i'll buy a PS3 when there's 5 games out that i'd buy the machine for, and they redesign that stupid bloody dual shock controller. The original version had the analogue sticks tacked on, as there was no-where else to put them without a major re-design of the controller. THEY ARE STILL THERE. 360 controller? Comfortable! GC controller? Comfortable! Xbox S (and the Duke) controller? Comfortable! PS1/2/3? Awful.

@ Nyteshade

You know what's funny? Everyone says that the PS3 is getting "stripped down" just to make money. But did anyone care to see that all this "stripping down" just, in the end, makes it extra features the same as the 360? PS3 was $600, had 4 USB, card readers, etc. They take that away, and now its only 2 USB ports. So basically its got the same extras as the 360 now. So, what I'm interpreting this is that a dumbed down PS3 is just a 360....but I'm SURE no 360 fan would like their console to be called as such.

Erm, but it is stripped down. If you take away the features, it's stripped. The 'Arcade' *cough* core *cough* 360 is stripped down, as it doesn't feature a HDD. Saying the PS3 shouldn't be called stripped down because it's the same as something else is pretty pointless, as the original features do not match.

It's not pointless, because people say "I don't want a crippled PS3, so I'll get a 360" but the features are the same. Or at least, people use the argument of it being "crippled

Isn't it possible to just stick a bigger HDD into a PS3?

yeah you can fit a bigger HDD into a PS3, Sony actually support this, although only do so because they were trying to dig at Microsoft's "encased" HDD.
