Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Behold, the opening cinematic for Sonic Unleashed, presented in Moonspeak. Regardless of whether or not you are a cynic, you can't deny that the sheer quality of this movie is quite something. The return to a more cartoony animation doesn't hurt things either. Sega really should do a full-length animated film with this kind of talent working for them.

The video starts well with a less than subtle nod to Star Wars, and the fight between Sonic and Robotnik is rather awesome too. Things start to go wrong with the arrival of Dark Gaia, where we devolve into dangerous anime territory, but hopefully they keep that crap down to a minimum.

After the jump, there is a first glimpse of the Hub World, from which you will be able to play the main levels. It definitely looks like the weakest part of the game, as Sonic doesn't seem like he can handle walking around a town very well. I don't know why Sega insists on these Hub Worlds, they don't work for Sonic.  Also, I am STILL going to ignore that little flying vermin that is hanging around Sonic. I'm going to just pretend I never saw it.

At the end of the video, you get to see the level that I played at TGS. Even though it looks like it plays itself, trust me -- I was not able to get the game to look quite as automatic as this guy makes it look. It does take some skill to make it flow so well, and this dude only got a "C" ranking. Worth considering if you think the game is just a case of moving forward.

[Update: It would seem that Sega has had the videos pulled. A bit of a shame, considering these videos seemed to do more to raise gamer interest than anything officially released thus far.]

It's quite funny to see Jim Sterling trying to defend a Sonic game. It must have made a real impression.

ShadoKat, you obviously never followed Sonic at all, because Super Sonic and the Chaos Crystals have basically ALWAYS existed. Thats a fail.

Not only have the chaos emeralds been there since day one, and Super Sonic been there since day two, coins have never been there at all.

Hey, Sonic actually did something cool! Chances are, though, that this awesome cutscene will be messed up by 4Kids voice actors.

Damn, the Korean link that I found (luvmysegadc at 11/02/2008 18:21) is SLOW, but worth it. It will be another 45 min. before I can view the game play file. (Switched to the 300N wireless on my HTPC and DownThemAll accelerator for the second file. The first took about 2 hours on my laptop w/o DTA. And this is just a SD version! Heaven help those who try to d/l the HD version.)
The opening animation (6+ min.) was a nice take on FF and the felt Pixar-like.

So far I've seen about 2.5 min of some game play from an aborted file, and WAS NOT impressed by the control. It reminded me of Sonic Adventure for the DC -- sloppy.

Final verdict later but right now Jim, I'm not impressed.

As Epic as it is, it's still no Sonic Boom!

Ok Jimbo, finally watched the gameplay footage. I think it's a major improvement over the last 3-5 console titles, but it still appears to be a game "on rails". Not quite the "Mario Killer" of days gone by, IMO. Then again, SEGA has disappointed me way too many times since the demise of the DC that it's hard for me to even care these days.

On a side note, Jimbo: I think you care about this game WAY TOO MUCH!, to the point that I'm afraid that you won't be unbiased with a review. To be quite honest, you are starting to remind me of GameSpot reviewers(yikes!). You might want to sit this one out and let someone else on the staff review this game when it's released.

(Feel free to add the Korean web link for the videos to your post. It's located in my original comments.)

That's what everyone said about Dynasty Warriors 6, before being pleasantly surprised.

I take up a shitload of games as personal causes, doesn't mean I can't be fair when reviewing them. If the game is a piece of shit, you will know.
