Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Behold, the opening cinematic for Sonic Unleashed, presented in Moonspeak. Regardless of whether or not you are a cynic, you can't deny that the sheer quality of this movie is quite something. The return to a more cartoony animation doesn't hurt things either. Sega really should do a full-length animated film with this kind of talent working for them.

The video starts well with a less than subtle nod to Star Wars, and the fight between Sonic and Robotnik is rather awesome too. Things start to go wrong with the arrival of Dark Gaia, where we devolve into dangerous anime territory, but hopefully they keep that crap down to a minimum.

After the jump, there is a first glimpse of the Hub World, from which you will be able to play the main levels. It definitely looks like the weakest part of the game, as Sonic doesn't seem like he can handle walking around a town very well. I don't know why Sega insists on these Hub Worlds, they don't work for Sonic.  Also, I am STILL going to ignore that little flying vermin that is hanging around Sonic. I'm going to just pretend I never saw it.

At the end of the video, you get to see the level that I played at TGS. Even though it looks like it plays itself, trust me -- I was not able to get the game to look quite as automatic as this guy makes it look. It does take some skill to make it flow so well, and this dude only got a "C" ranking. Worth considering if you think the game is just a case of moving forward.

[Update: It would seem that Sega has had the videos pulled. A bit of a shame, considering these videos seemed to do more to raise gamer interest than anything officially released thus far.]

So this is where they wasted most of the game's resources. Lol I kid. My interest is piqued!

Wow, that doesn't look bad at all. The sense of speed they show off is great, but I don't think I have the platforming skill oder patience for pattern remembering to get fun out of this game.

I always loved the use of CGI movies in games, makes it possible to watch some epic encounters/events.

This scence is pretty good, especially the bit where sonic is chasing Robotnik.

I am not convinced about Sonic Unleashed, the gameplay once again looks linear. Sure this time it isn't about moving forward all the time, because you're going to smack into a wall regardless of how you control the game, but it doesn't feel like the old Sonic gameplay.

And who is the character with you on the TGS level? Not another new Sonic character is it?

As for the opening cinematic. Yes its quite epic, but shows how Super Sonic isn't quite invincible, and he definitely let his guard down when Eggman caught him in that force field.

The Intro movie is excellent, and the gameplay video gave me motion sickness. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Damn, they really do need to make a CGI Sonic movie! Also, that gameplay footage actually makes me want the game oddly enough. Come on Sonic, be good this time!

I don't know who keeps giving this guy the money and technology to build all these nasty devices of doom and stuff. Maybe Robotnik and Umbrella should team up in a superstar "illogical badguy" plot to confuse the world.

I'm still not sold on the speed run gameplay, although it doesn't look terrible. No hub worlds allowed in my Sonic games.

Sonic Team should develop a new game, retro-style, just like Sonic 2 and sell it for like five bucks on Live or something. People obviously love retro-gaming (read: Mega Man).

Except for when he stopped kicking ass.

The gameplay looks nearly the same as Sonic and the Secret Rings but with some 2.5d gameplay elements thrown in. It does look like its going to be better than that though, although I don't think most people will like it. On the other hand, I kinda liked Sonic and the Secret Rings, so this looks like it might be fun for me.

Well, even if the game is not good, at least the opening cutscene was really cool. The action was nice and the graphics are very pretty.
You know, I wish i could see the Wii version of this opening, since is the only next-gen console I have. I hope they at least try to make it look good.

Also, I have a feeling I'm the only one who kinda liked having a hub world in Sonic Adventure 1 <_<. I kinda liked having shit to explore and find. Then again, I haven't played the game since I was like 10.

"Is there a reason you put this in the ps3 section even though the video is clearly from a 360?"

Because I did not do it. This is in both the PS3 and 360 sections. Unfortunately, I have no control over what the software chooses to use as the public tag.

Omg I don't care what anyone says this game looks like my childhood friend went current gen. I've never seen games move that fast the hedgehog engine sure knows how to render those graphics fast.

I agree about the hub been a bad idea but from the look of it on here it looks like it works fine and isn't that shit in the last "next gen sonic" they released.

Well done for making me believe you've done something good again sega now please deliver what you've shown!

That intro was pretty impressive!

However, why is it that The Hub City is such a serene place when a planet-cracking monster has just been unleashed on a planet and Robotnik is in space with an armada of ships?

Wow. MY jaw was litterally hanging as I watched this. Yeah, Sonic controls oddly in the overworld, but hey, at least it doesn't take 5 minutes to load a quick conversation with the people! And personally, I always enjoyed SA1's over world, so hopefully this can mirror that at least a little bit. I'm loving the art direction and, despite the rollercoaster-seeming gameplay, I now really want this game. I just REALLY hope this doesn't just end up being another phase of the Sonic Cycle...

Sold!!

If the game holds to that level of quality, then I think it could be satisfying.

I'd also like to point out that this is the first Sonic game to open with him having all the chaos emeralds and the Super Sonic form since Sonic 3.

The Hub world doesn't look too bad(or at least, it looks better than Sonic '06's). It looks like they took a chunk of the level and put people in it(and connected it to a warp room). If it's like that, it'll be ok.

Everyone seems to be forgetting Sonic's other form, the Werehog or whatever.

At TGS you would change into him and have to find colored gems and stuff to proceed to the next level... Very similar to SA2's Knuckles levels. Pole climbing, swinging, exploring, etc.

So, that demo level they showed was cool and all, but how much of that will we actually see in game?

"So, that demo level they showed was cool and all, but how much of that will we actually see in game?"

The split between normal Sonic and the Werehog is said to be 60% and 40% respectively.

The hell? Did Robotnik just totally steal Sephiroth's evil scheme?

I'm still mighty skeptical about how well it'll actually turn out, but it might not be complete crap if the production values are that incredible throughout the rest of the game
