The smile never left my face as I played the new NBA Jam photo

Growing up in the days of the Super Nintendo was a huge blessing for me. I love Nintendo' s second videogame console with all of my heart and still believe it to be one of the best systems ever made. Many cartridges went through my Super Nintendo and none left a mark on my mind as NBA Jam: Tournament Edition did.

Fast forward to 2010 and the NBA Jam series has been brought back from the dead. NBA Jam is on a Nintendo console once again and in the hands of a formal rival company, Electronic Arts. I previewed the game earlier this month and I can say that the new NBA Jam made me feel just like a kid again.

Boom shaka laka after the break for more on the new Jam.

NBA Jam (Wii)
Developer: EA Canada
Publisher: Electronic Arts
To be released: Fall 2010

NBA Jam fans, you're the reason a new entry to the series has been made. The fan outcry was the driving force behind EA's decision to greenlight the project at all. NBA Jam is all about the fans of the original and the team at EA Canada made sure to stay true to the Jam roots through the game's Classic Campaign mode.

Players will be in control of two-man teams as they go up against other teams. I used the Nunchuck and Wiimote combo, but you will be able to just use the Wiimote or the Classic controller as well. You'll be able to perform turbos, steal balls, spin and shove others around in the no-holds barged game of basketball. To shoot your ball you'll move the Wiimote upward and then move the controller down to either shoot the ball or do a lay up.

The visual style remains true to the series as the player animations keep the quirkiness of the franchise intact. Players' bodies are rendered in 3D while the heads are shown off in 2D. The head and body move independently of each other, and it's a hoot to see the players running around the court.

While purists will be pleased with the classic mode, there's also the Remix Tour mode for those looking for something more. The remix mode will offer a ton of new features -- such as a boss battle mode featuring legendary NBA players -- but EA won't be going into detail about the new stuff just yet.

NBA Jam supports four players, but as of right now, multiplayer is limited to local play. EA isn't ruling out online multiplayer just yet, so fingers crossed that online makes it into the final game. Either way, NBA Jam is one of those games that you really want to play with others in the same room.

I played a few rounds during the preview event and the smile on my face never left me. My cheeks were hurting by the time I stopped! NBA Jam is about having a good time and EA Canada certainly has certainly achieved that feeling.

Neat! I hope the finished product turns out well. If it does, this might very well be the first sports game I'd be willing to buy in years.

I've never really liked sports games, but this is one I always had fun with. Can't wait.

Never played the original arcade game, but I'm a bit more accepting towards arcade sports titles, like the Mario sports games than simluators. Do we know yet if this is going to be retail or WiiWare though?

I'd love for this to come out for 360 or PS3.

I mean, I have a Wii, but I prefer playing with a different controller :(

Please Please Please come to XBLA or PSN!

You know what would be amazing that they should do if they ported it? Let you import your own head from the cams. Easiest create a character ever.

Is that a double-dunk happening?!

Reminds me more of NBA Maximum Hangtime, my personal fave of the series.

Man, I love NBA Jam. But somehow, watching the video makes me not happy. I don't like the 2D heads AT ALL.

Eh...Color me unimpressed. I had the Genesis revisions of NBA Jam and T.E, but they never clicked as well as the arcade.

Like NFL Blitz, Jam was a much better experience in the arcade than on home console. Though it's nice to see that they didn't try and wedge in "strategy" or "moves".

NBA Jam is the one Basketball game that I can actually enjoy to this day and it looks like it's going to be a lot of the same, which is a GOOD thing when dealing with classics. :)

had alot of fun with the n64 NBA jam, nothing like creating an alien basketball player. hopefully there will be some character creation in this one too. Definitely was a fan of the upgrading elements in Jam.

Then again, my parents hated me for the months I played that game on full-volume.

HE'S ON FIRE...BOOM SHAKALAKA!!!

Maybe my neighbor one apartment over will hate me just as much =)

@mrand: it was stated you can use the Classic controller.
@twelve51: Incorrect. As of now, it is a Wii exclusive.

...anyhow, I never liked sports games, and I never played this, but the arcade nature makes it look kinda fun, like the Mario sports games...i may give it a rent when it comes out, see what I think. basketball is one of the few sports I actually understand.

I hope they put in cheat codes for Obama and Biden like they did for Clinton and Gore. NBA JAM was my favorite game for the Genesis, and I still play it on an emulator with my friends.

Super excited for this! I have never liked any basketball game except NBA Jam, arcade-style sports games are the only way to go. With this and the Sonic revamp....I am really starting to hope more of my favorite franchises from the past come back in their old school glory, just in HD.

Awesome. The chance that this could have been a shitty re-hash was high but thankfully it looks like they're putting some love into it. Just looking at the screens reminds me of some retro Jam action on the Genesis. Pity it's only for Wii at this stage, I'd grab that shit in an instant if it were on PSN.

I can vouch. There was definitely a smile on your face from the moment you walked into the room and sat in front of the flat screen already displaying the Destructoid quote to the time we left. It was glorious. Shortly after you turned back into a douche :)

Can't say I'm a fan of basketball. With that being said, I can't wait for this new NBA Jam game. :/ I know that doesn't make much sense, you see, I can't stand basketball, but NBA Jam has always been awesome!
Also, Fall?! That sucks.
