The Smash DOJO!! recap: Pikmin, Pikmin, Pikmin, Pikmin, Pikmin!

2:36 AM on 01.11.2008, Hamza CTZ Aziz 46 comments

     Super Smash Bros.

The DOJO week started off with the return of more old stages from Melee. Yoshi's Island, Corneria, Onett, Brinstar, and Rainbow Ride all make it back to Brawl. Tuesday revealed the updated Multi-Man Brawl mode. This time, the fighters are known as the Fighting Alloy Team which consist of Red, Blue, Yellow and Green Alloy fighters. There will also be Co-op Multi-Man fights this time too. We all already know Wednesday's update, but just in case you missed it, Pikmin and Captain Olimar from the Pikmin series will be playable characters in Brawl. Olimar's stage music was also revealed.

On Thursday, Snake's Final Smash was shown off. Snake calls in a helicopter which takes him away from the battlefield. He hangs off a rope ladder and shoots at the map with a Grenade Launcher. You only have 12 rounds so you need to try and shoot them all off before the Final Smash runs out.

Today's update continues on the big news from Wednesday showing off Pikmin & Olimar's Special Moves. Olimar's standard special move allows him to pick Pikmin up out of the ground. You can have up to six Pikmin with you and certain Pikmin will appear more often in certain areas of the map. Each Pikmin will offer different attack styles which you can read up at the DOJO. Otherwise, Olimar will throw Pikmin with his side special move. Olimar's up special is called Pikmin Chain, which makes the Pikmin turn into a whip, more or less. The down special is Pikmin Order and this makes the Pikmin go back to Olimar and also allows you to change the order the Pikmin are when they're in line.

What did you think of the Smash updates this week? An all out Captain Olimar battle looks like it could get confusing pretty fast.

I know it's a long shot, but do u think Capt. Olimar's final smash will involve using Pikmin ?

I wonder how Kirby is going to use Pikmin when he absorbs Olimar's ability, since he won't have any of Olimar's other special moves.

Ah man...I feel so damn guilty and sad when Pikmin die on me. Those screams are awful. It'll be worse in Brawl, ha.

I wonder if his final smash will involve any of the creatures from the Pikmin world? Like a giant Bulblax or one of those damn birds.

But because of Nintendo's assbackwards online plan this game will never come within 50 miles of my wii.

i will never input a single friend code into my wii, I should not have too. oh well nintendo better luck next gen, cause you already failed last gen....TWICE!

Today's announcement of how Olimar's special moves got me more excited than any Dojo update in months. The fact that he controls almost exactly like he does in Pikmin is so awesome.

But there are still so many unanswered questions. Under what conditions will Pikmin die? What will Olimar's Pikmin enabled smash attack and throw be? What kind of floor is more likely to produce what kind of Pikmin?

The list goes on! I'm all a flutter with the possibilities.

Rainbowblack- Don't deprive yourself of Brawl's online fun just to try to prove a point. Friend codes are assey, but they will exist as long as there are Jack Thompsons, nervous parents, and online gaming stalkers. So you might as well get used to them.

Or just do the random, friend code free battles. Maybe that will cheer you up.

I'm guessing the Pikmin can be attacked by other players and that's how they die.

That's my guess too, Freeman, but...

1) I wonder if that's true

2) And if so, I wonder if it's the only way they can die.

Part of the fun of Pikmin (the game) is the fact that the Pikmin have minds of their own. I hope that is also true of the Pikmin in Brawl. There is no other experience in gaming quite like the sense of protectiveness, annoyance, and pride you get from blowing your whistle just in time to call back a Pikmin before they are about wander into a fatal hazard or get eaten by a Spotty Bulbear or Burrowing Snagret

And I just realized... there is probably going to be a Pikmin related boss in the Sub Space Emissary.

My minds's internal "W00T" siren is blasting at full blast right now.

I noticed how some of the Pikmin has buds or flowers when he pulls them up with just leaves. I wonder if that figures in to gameplay mechanic (Pikmin who survive longer are stronger?) or if it's just a random graphic.

i just look at the ridiculous amount of stuff that ninty is fitting into this game and it spells FAIL to me in 72pt. I really love the smash series, i still play the 64 version regularly, but i think theres just too many ppl in it now. the game will b bursting at the seems with overproduction.

So because they're putting a lot into the production of this game and giving people more options and more characters with new fighting styles, the game isn't going to be good?? [sarcasm][ATHF reference]Your logic is flawless cup.[/sarcasm][/ATHF reference]

I think what pwned88 is trying to say is that there's so much known material now that combined with the unannounced material, Nintendo will be forced to spread itself too thin and the overall quality will be lower than either of the previous titles. I disagree with that because if they claimed they never had enough production time in the past to create a full-fledged single player campaign and they do now, if anything they have more than enough time for all of this and more. My only concerns are over framerate issues with 32 Pikmin on screen in the context of a fighting game with more simultaneous flashy effects than any other in its genre.

I'm wondering what Kirby is going to be able to do when he copies Olimar's Pikmin pluck neutral special. If he can just dig up random Pikmin, how is he going to use them?

what i meant to get at is that smash has always been a simple smash n' grab style game, and the more modes, characters, powerups, special moves, etc that they have, the more complex controls and execution is going to be, i always liked smash for it's pickup & play style, i don't wanna learn the 40 moves for 30 characters, then the game isn't fun anymore cuz you don't get combos quite right or yur buddy spends every waking hour learning every move and newcomers stand no chance. smash has never been about depth, its been about smashing thew crap out of each other, hence the name.

Heh, finally, a week of Dojo updates that are actually interesting.

I wanted Olimar as a playable character ever since they first announced Brawl, but I never thought they'd actually put him in. I'm very glad to see the return of Multi-Man-Melee, and I love the co-op options they're including as well. Snake's final smash also seems like lots of fun. I just can't wait to try all this stuff out when I finally get the game. <3

Pwned88, I gotta be honest with you, you sound like you're just looking for attention. How could you possibly mean it when you say something like "Smash Bros Brawl looks like it has so much to offer! I hate that!"

There has been no mention of technical combos or anything of the sort in Brawl. All play tests of the game thus far have stated it plays like Melee, which with the exception of a few small changes, played like the N64 original. Sure, there are final Smashes now and some new characters, but other than that, Brawl is just more Smash Bros.

I mean really, what would you have preferred? Brawl have less new stuff in it? What would be the point of that?

You don't work for Gamestop, do you? Your criticism of Brawl reminds me of some of their reviews. Like when they gave Ratchet & Clank a lower score for having "too much variety."
twentythoughts's Avatar

The "too many characters" argument doesn't really stick with me... From what it looks like, Brawl will have roughly the same amount of characters as Melee, or maybe a couple more. Of course, keeping the balance is going to be an issue, but balance is less of an issue in this kinda game (where you'll have four people of very varying skill levels) than with more detailed brawlers.

Not to mention that there's STILL no more characters in this game than in some of the later Street Fighter Alphas or Developer VS Developer fighting games.

and I knew about Sonic being in it since Summer of 06 (Friend who knows people in the Biz leaked it to me)

This Week is the Biggest freakout My Buddies have had about this game since Sonic was Officially Announced

and @pwned88

Dont Worry about the n00b Playability 4 Types of Control was Announced a while back so you can play it the same way you did in Melee or with the Upgraded Control Schemes and even Customize how you Play

and all the Extra Stuff that they be adding, many people were complaing about the lack of in the last game,
(besides there has to be more than one way to unlock all these new Characters)

Olimar is cool, but he's pretty disappointing to people (like me) who were hoping for Megaman. Also, I agree with Rainbowblack about Nintendo constantly fucking up it's online capabilities. I at least want to know who I'm playing against when it's not with friends. However, as for the amount of characters in Brawl, I say keep them coming.

@The Excel

There certainly weren't framerate issues in the pikmin games with a hundred of the little monsters, why would there be issues for 32?

also, where'd you get 32 from? It's 6 pikmin per Olimar, so max is 24.
