Yeah, sorry about that, EA. I just tried to sing "Happy Birthday" in Simlish, but it came out horribly. It's the thought that counts, right?

The Sims franchise turns 10 years old today. The original debuted on February 4, 2000, and since then has sold over 125 million copies. If that doesn't impress you, get this: The series has pulled in $2.5 billion, ranking it up there with blockbuster films like the Matrix Trilogy and Titanic. That's 60 countries, 22 languages, 6 million monthly Facebook visits, and an unmeasured amount of time spent gaming.

After all of that, I'm kind of proud of The Sims. After all of that, I'm kind of ashamed to say that I've only played the first game.

When I first borrowed the Sims I blew off a night at the restaurant I worked at to stay home and play it. They used to give you SO much shit if you were off work, i believe as a result i was dunked into a vat of cold water, then locked in a walk in freezer for half an hour or so.

Wow, that was 10 years ago! Shit.

It was all worth it.

Happy birthday my old friend.

I always remember my brother playing the first one and using the cheat codes he would build these big elaborate houses with all these rooms and as his Sims would enter the rooms he would remove the doors trapping them forever... or until they went crazy and died.

I only played the first game too, but then I started more console gaming and all the console sounded a bit rubbish so I never bothered with them.

I remember downloading a Stormtrooper and Darthvader character skin, made them move in with one another and have a gay relationship.

i once had a child in the sims and locked it in a glass case in the middle of the living room so social services couldn't take it away. It just sat there pissing and generally hating it.

Good times.

I used to put a fence around someone with hay seats and a campfire. Then I'd have them light it and they'd burn to death.

10 years of brutal cruelty and obvious sadism. And I loved every minute :)

Thinking about it, this is a pretty important game really.

This is kinda casual gamings 10th birthday too.

It's the first game that non-gamers could happily sit down and play.

It all kinda started with the sims, before that games were only really played by a specific group of people, but the sims opened it up to a whole new audience.

Casual gaming was born 10 years ago.

Also, it helped bring more female gamers into, uh, being gamers.
Well, sure, WoW had its part to but, meh.
I love games. I love women. More women who play games plz thx. If that means 10 new sims 3 expansions, so be it! Do whatever has to be done ^_^

I still remember how my first Sim house looked like. I think I'll do it again. More power to the franchise!
