The Sims: The Movie: The intensely stupid idea photo

According to Harry Knowles' AICN, 20th Century Fox now has the rights to make a movie adaptation of The Sims based on a script penned by the genius who brought you Scary Movie 3.

Doesn't this sound like exactly the sort of thing I would make up to parody the increasing idiocy of the Hollywood machine as regards gaming? My version would have had a subtext about the increasing irrelevance of the proletariat in our modern, mechanized world, and maybe the word 'indubitably' in it, but otherwise, this whole thing is starting to get eerie.

I'm going to go hide in the cellar. I'll see you down there when the sky starts raining ducks and blood.

"First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have... reproductive organs under those little, white pants. It's just so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. You know, what's the point of living... if you don't have a dick?"

Uh-hmmm..

As much as I like Sims, the idea seems a bit too ridiculous. Yechh.

That's stupid. Playing The Sims is about creating your own world, and living a normal life. Who wants to watch a movie about NORMAL LIFE?

"The SIMS has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," said Humble. "Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling."

No. No I can't imagine. Explain yourself.

They could always make it an epic horror movie where people are terrorized by floating green diamonds that command them to grill hamburgers in their living room for days until their house burns down.

Pathetic

Stranger than Fiction w/ Will Ferrell is the closest thing to a Sims movie, I think.

I reckon it will be something of a Truman Show meets Big Brother. People hear about this new show called "The Sims" then go on the TV show and then people watch the house as the contestants live in this perfect society...then maybe everyhting goes wrong and a few people get kileld and some are haunted by ghosts. Oh and one guy has to suffer the obligatory death of locking him inside four walls to see how long it takes for him to die.

Love that avatar as an animated gif, but I feel conflicted about fapping to it. Is it robot love at that point?

Also, isn't the Sims basically done and over with? Are people still playing this when WoW, Second Life, and Animal Crossing can divvy up your wasteful gaming hours in a much more efficient way?

This would be almost as timely, exciting, and culturally relevant as a biopic about the Dell dude.

@ jonnywrigs- i was searching all over the post for the donnie darko reference and couldn't find it, then i scrolled up and saw it. at first i thought you meant cellar. i love that movie. also you avatar is chock full of %100 grade A win.

@ the post- worst/greatest idea ever. first, how the hell do you make a movie based on the sims? why not just make a reality movie where they just follow a family around and edit it to make some resemblence of a story and plot. it's the greatest idea ever cuz people will still go see it to see how they do it, and or just laugh at the sheer stupidity of the idea. the sad thing is people go see shitty movies to laugh at the shittiness and thats why they keep making them. they laugh at you saying why the hell make this crap and then go watch it, and they laugh at you cuz they still got your money. if people stop seeing shitty movies just for the crap factor and they don't make money, they wont make such crap movies.

why don't they make movies about interesting games with stories? why did fox pick this up and not halo?

i played the first sims game for about 5 minutes before i realized it was boring to play real life when i can just live it. seriously... who is buying these damn games? i think EA might be buying them all and dumping them in a ditch a la ET on atari just to boost sales. they are demonic like that.

Because maybe the're going by sales figures. If it sells a lot of games, maybe it will make a lot of money as a film.

Sad, MGS and Splinter Cell would be perfect for the big screen. Tons of plot twists and shoot em up action. Hell, they're voiced by actors already.

I just don't get it.

So basically, you can just write any run-of-the-mill movie and slap "The Sims" on it, right? No wonder they're going for it.

OK here is where I get ballistically angry at the idiots who run movie studios.

GAMES are meant to be PLAYED. the appeal of GAMES has to do with the fact the user CONTROLS THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME. While certain genres do, in fact, have stories, and the story is PART of the appeal, by and large the STORIES IN GAMES ARE THROWAWAY ELEMENTS. (with like a said, a *few* exceptions.) now, THE SIMS is the DEFINITION OF USER CREATED "sandbox" games. IE THERE IS NO PLOT. basically

HOW THE FUCK COULD ANYONE POSSIBLY MAKE THIS A MOVIE

It's called Stanger than Fiction staring Will Ferrell! Don't make me edit a clip of that movie with green diamonds over their heads!

DVD I will agree with you there, but, I'm too much of a sucker for anime. I have to have the biggest useless collection of anime in the world (on DVD not the net)

You name it I prolly gots it. It's sad really. I blame the wife.

I hated sailor moon, even though I watched it as a kid before going to school, but I *think* my girl might have Season 1 or something. Sadly she prefers the American dubbed version, so obviously they didn't include that in the American version.

Besides, season 1 is way off. I think that episode was with all 5 (six?) sailors established as characters.

Like a few people, as soon as I read this headline I thought "R rated existential nightmare of spiralling madness and despair".

Combine Dark City with a bit of The Matrix, The Truman Show, and In The Mouth Of Madness, and set it all in the happy sunny Sims world to make it ultra sinister, and you've got a winner.

Start it out like 90210: The Movie, with the Sims just kicking back and chilling out and doing whatever they do for the first 20 minutes, and end it in a whirlwind of savage, hopeless destruction, as they become aware that they're being utterly manipulated by a giant 12 year old girl with a PC, have no real identities or purpose of their own, and utterly lose their minds as a result.

The film ends with them charging around, screaming nightmarishly in Simlish, while Nihilistically laying waste to their surroundings and each other.

I'd pay to see that. Twice. If fact they should put an FMV of that in one of the games.

All eventual suckage of The Sims: The Movie aside, this could be a great vehicle for setting up a fairly run-of-the-mill "what happens when you can control the world" plotline, and then just intermittently cut the rest of the movie with major-actor voiced machinima. Being the first major studio to do that (South Park's WoW ep noted), whether successful or not, might jumpstart...a really lame trend. That is all.

I racked my brain trying to come up with a joke about a film based on the sims, but nothing I could come up with could match the absurdity of it actually happening. It is a hard time to be a satirist.

In regards to anime, FLCL and koi kaze uber alles, with an honourable mention for vampire hunted d: bloodlust. Used to watch a lot of anime back in the day, then stopped for a few years, only started again recently. It's amazing how overrated 90% of popular anime actually is. That said, trigun does kick major ass.
