The seedy underworld of the gamer black market photo

PS3, the most powerful console on the market? It might be. Apparently, that isn't enough to make gamers buy them and keep them. According to Tech.Blorge, a lot more people are trying to trade their PS3's for Wii's than Sony might like to think. This would be less humiliating were the PS3 not the rarer of the two consoles, but considering Sony's behemoth was the scarcer of the two, it's a little like your boss finding those naked pictures you took with his daughter during the Christmas party last year. Good luck explaining that you didn't teach her to get her legs to do that.

Between tidbits like this and reports of Sony reps waxing poetic about PS3's "freezing up", Sony's hanging out right near ugly territory again as far as I'm concerned. They took a great risk by pricing this console so high, and if all this mad black market action is any indication, the Wii may be winning the race despite lesser graphical prowess. I'm going to start running now, before the Sony fanboys start pounding me with a metal pipe they've wrenched out of the nearby ground in burning fury.

Yeah, Sony had the right idea about the strength of the PS3. Problem is no one wants to shell out 600 for it. Nintendo might walk away with more then good sales.

I dont think sony can recover from this slip.

You gotta hand it to Sony, they really know how to fuck up a system launch. I wonder if people were returning their PS3s to Walmart or Target. The kind of looks they would get would be priceless to see.

Over the holidays the store I work for had a whopping 8 playstation 3's (which we received 2 weeks before christmas, which was also our first shipment of ps3's at all.) Several weeks prior I was the one forced to call people on the preorder list to tell them they wouldn't be getting their ps3 like we were told they would, which was a really fun way of making yourself feel like crap.

Lo and behold not two weeks before christmas and we couldn't sell the damn things. Everyone on the preorder list that I called back either 1) didn't want it. 2) couldn't afford it 3) already got one, but the one thing that was consistant with each one was that every ps3 preorder I called back also asked if we had any Wii's in stock. I basically ended up selling them by walking up to people and saying "Hey, want to buy a ps3?"

I want a PS3 if I can get one for free. I think I would probably still buy a Wii if PS3's were $250. That's if I didn't already have a 360, and if I were able to pull myself away from the sweet, sweet embrace of the Cole Train. Everybody wants to ride the Train baby!

These stories aren't always a true reflection of whats happening and the PS3 has certainly had any indicators of popularity screwed by all the Ebayers. Still the first half of 2007 is going to be a very telling time for Sony and the PS3. They'll no longer have a production shortage to hide behind and if the boxes fail to shift off of the shelves developers will also start to question whether they should be risking their jobs backing a lame horse.

Until then though you can't really tell whats going on. Still with little movement on price possible, a year plus before some killer apps are released and a really strong 360 line up in 2007 I'd be shitting myself if I was Sony.

Both consoles have their problems, just the PS3 seems to have a few more. The funny thing, Sony could have avoided almost all of these problems if they had either waited until March 07' or Christmas 07' (this would be the better in my honost opinion) to launch. They would still have the higher price and the still iffy-expensive BluRay, but they would have had production issues ironed out, more time to make the consoles, given more time to developers to make better launch titles, no compitiion from a highly hyped system, more time to fine tune their online network, and gotten a lot of the bugs and kinks work out.

I still don't think it's really clear what console will come out on top, but right now it's not looking great for Sony on any front. The PS3 had an absolutely terrible launch, people aren't really accepting BluRay, and the PSP is trying to go head-to-head with the money printing DS. Personally, I think it's probably going to come out with the 360 on top, with the Wii second, and finally the PS3.

I tried buying a PS3 in Miami from 3 places today to ship to our contest winner and I couldn't. I just send an offer for a Craigslist guy. They aren't as plentiful everywhere I guess!

Yeah PS3 didn't have a good launch and I wouldn't mind if they completely died in this generation but it won't happen. I have a 360 and I love it and even though I love every piece of bad news i hear about the ps3 i still think they will recover and go on to be strong. I think they still have a chance of "winning" this gens console wars but it will be close and xbox and nintendo are going to take up a huge percentage of the market share if microsoft doesnt take the #1 spot. I've said it before, xbox is in a similar position the ps2 was in last gen, they have a head start with an installed base of units and a decent line up of games, and it is going up against a newer console that is "more powerful". Will i buy a ps3 maybe, but not for a few years and a couple hundred price drop and only if they hold onto a couple good exclusives.

i hate to say this but maybe it just wasn't ready they should put on ANOTHER delay and they could've probably manufactured it cheaper and had more time for developers to get their head around ps3 ultimate code which is harder to understand than your couchwarming whore/girlfriend

i could have purchased a ps3 at (2) stores yesterday. of course i live in mississippi and maybe that might have some impact on availability. Yet there is still no signs of any wiis. Toys 'r' us did receive two wii/ps3 shipments the week of christmas. So your toys r us article about the wii/ps3 going there was correct.

I really hope either...

A) Squaresoft ports everything to the 360

or

B) PS3 has a significant price drop

I really love the RPGs that were out on the PS2, but its not worth shelling out $600 for them.

I'm with you Caffeine.

I need to see some Japanese developers tell Sony to fuck off, and either bail for the Xbox or Wii. Then I can set my fears aside. Dragon Quest 9 was a bombshell last week, doesn't matter who you are or what you like to play, to lose a Dragon Quest game to a handheld is "Crab level" massive damage to Sony.

Seeing Capcom take a risk on projects like Lost Planet and Dead Rising is also certainly encouraging to this end.

DOAX2...is not.

I ultimately have to take a wait and see approach I suppose, if I want to play it safe with my money. A price drop on the 360's going to be hard to ignore as more games of varied content and quality push it towards better relevance in my eyes. I've already run a good deal of content over the 360 already play testing a unit I shipped overseas a few months ago to a friend. It's got a lot better chance at this point than the PS3 in dominating, but they have to get the support of the Japanese developers in my eyes if they want to "win" me over completely.

Again, we've laid the groundwork, now this just needs to come to fruition to work. I hope Lost Planet sales #'s are off the chart.

I've been to many GameStops and Best Buys since Christmas, and several of them had a few PS3s in stock (one Best Buy even had at least 6 or 7) but I've yet to see a single Wii in stock. I saw a few Wiimotes in a Toys R Us, but that's the closest I've seen.
