The Secret World still looks bloody amazing photo

The first batch of real screenshots for Funcom's The Secret World has landed, and they're making this unique "modern" MMO look rather splendid indeed. These screens follow the amazing trailer that we posted a few days ago, and I must say that all the media released so far has left me very excited.

I just hope this game does what Age of Conan never managed and makes it to the Xbox 360. Funcom has repeatedly said that its Conan MMO was coming to the 360 but let's face it, that probably won't ever happen. This game looks far more interesting and promising than Age of Conan did, so I really wish it all the best.

Fingers crossed, eh?

I'm actually really interested in this game. It looks like an MMO I could really get into.

Making it on the 360 is the least in the list of what AOC didn't do that this game should. Gogo Failcom!

Those trees remind me of Age of Conan. Guess it's the same engine.

Microsoft is what is keeping MMOs off the 360 I am sure. Not only due to money concerns and Live stuff, but also the need for streaming constant downloads, the need for immediate patching sometimes, and of course the need for mouse and keyboard support, which I could be wrong but I believe MS has to authorize.

MMOs are just games that need an open platform to really function well, I would imagine. Even if a new MMO is released on 360 at some point, I bet it would be heavily neutered.

The good thing of course is that MMOs are made to run on older computers, so unless you have some strange allergic reaction to playing games on a PC, you can probably play them with VERY little expense on the computer you own right now.

This game looks good, so I'll give Funcom a chance to impress me.

Sure, you could play this on PC, but many of us are weary of PC drivers, updates etc, let alone configure your system to meet a games specs. We just want to switch on and play. This is why consoles always sell.

There are very few MMOs on 360 that have impressed enough for gamers to commit time too, FFXI is the closest thing 360 has to that. If The Secret World plays like most established 1st/3rd person games, I think it will have more of a chance. I'll be keeping an eye on this and APB. I hope its free to play, because I can't afford a WoW habit, with plenty of games coming out all the time.

Go Funcom, please don't disappoint.

The following quote (from here) is the only reason I still hold a glimmer of hope for this game (or rather, for my ever playing this game personally):

Question: My question is, will there be a singleplayer experience in the secret world? hope to hear a yes or no.

Tørnquist's answer: That really depends on what you mean by ’single player’. If you’re looking for an entirely offline single-player experience, then no; the game will be online only, and you’ll almost always be around other players. If you’re looking for a way to play by yourself in the online world, then yes; TSW will have plenty of options and plenty of gameplay for players who don’t like to – or have time to – team up, or who want to team up only occasionally and casually. There will be lots of quests and adventures you can go on by yourself, and also alternative gameplay that relies less on a typical team dynamic. It’ll be a solo-friendly game.

Given that I've never played a MMO before nor really ever had an interest in doing so prior to this, I'd like to ask people who have played them what they make of the above quote. Is this something new-ish, or have there already been other MMOs that are 'solo-friendly' in a similar manner that this claims it will be (and in a way that isn't overly simplistic, boring and/or crappy)? Is it even feasible? I mean, is it reasonable to expect to be able to potentially play a MMO like this, without the actual "MM" part being overbearing? Could I really play this without worrying overmuch about being communicated with by other sentient biological beings, and also have it not suck? I know that hardly anyone actually knows anything about this game, but I'm mostly just looking for wild, unfounded speculation here.

Because if this ends up being pure, standard MMO, I won't give a rat's ass about it, but if I can play it and mainly ignore other people and do my own thing without penalty (aside from "missing out" on the social aspect of it, which I really couldn't care less about), then that would be pretty cool. I hate the very concept of me playing a MMO, but despite that this game still interests the fuck outta me.

And hell, if I do somehow end up actually playing this, despite everything I just said, it may even end up being my gateway drug into the lurid world of MMOs proper, causing me to come out of my shell, so to speak. Or else to spiral down into the most horrible of addictions, like some kind of crazy drug, as that's my main concern and primary reason for avoiding the genre to begin with. I've seen what they've done to others in the past (*cough*WoW*cough*), and I fear I may lack the self control to avoid following in their footsteps if I choose to partake as well. That may seem incredibly lame to most of you, but it's something that I recognize as a valid risk for me. Hell, I spend enough time playing "normal" video games, as it is.

So, teal deer version: Should I try this when it comes out, hoping to play mostly solo but running the risk of *gasp* social interaction with other humans, or should I give it a pass and just stick to, I dunno, Oblivion or something?

@ IM OK

Every MMO says that, basically. Some are more teamwork related than others... some are more PvP than others... but at the end of the day if you really want to invest in an MMO and get to the higher level content, you will at some point need to play with a bunch of other people.

I am hoping The Old Republic changes this... and has no monthly fee.

There's no way I'm paying a monthly fee for any MMO game. I've just finished calculating and 15 bucks is roughly 68 "dollars" in my country.

@horrorscope
yes me....and i have to say something about it..:

I played AoC from the beginning...even on early access!
Then i stopped after 4 months...the game was to buggy, the performance sucked ass.
Then i decided this year to start it again...because they offered a WELCOME BACK SPECIAL....ehmm....how can that be that the same stupid bugs are still there...or even more bugs`? i was so fucking disappointed...

The only good thing about it, is that i have the Artbook and a Soundtrack CD...what i enjoyed more than the game...

Hope Funcom learned a lesson for their whole life.

Awwww man I thought it was for ps3. Well guess I won't be able to play this online (which I'm assuming is all of it).
