Factor in EA's logo on the game, despite lack of involvement, and even less people with touch it.
I think open world rather than a seires of linear instances is important though.
Yep, this.
1. Guild Wars 2
2. Guild Wars 2
3. It wasn't that great a game in terms of mechanics/controls anyway.
I think that a Elder Scrolls MMO could be successful if it plays like Skyrim with other players in the world. If it plays like WoW set in Tamriel, then I think it will fail.
a) wasn't an MMO
or
b) was free to play
I LOVED the concept, but I'm not enough of an MMO fan to pay full retail price for one. Also, mixed reviews didn't help.
Had it released on consoles as an epic single player game with a tight story and possibly some online co-op (imagine if it was like Borderlands drop-in/out!), then it would have been a day one buy for me.
I just don't have the time, effort, or desire to continually pay for an MMO.
It's not that I'm cheap, I just don't see the value in paying $15 a month for a game that I'll lose when I stop paying. Don't take the game from me, just let me play it offline if the money goes to the server costs.
I mean how are they going to sell if almost nobody knows it exist ?
I'm sure everyone agrees with me.
Wait, are you telling me it was $50+ retail AND you had to pay a monthly fee? No wonder it fucking didn't sell. You can really only expect to get away with that kind of thing if you are an established IP like WoW.
Second, you lose nothing by trying the Free Trial. I'd recommend this game to anyone; even the people woried about it being an MMO. The Storylines and Missions are, by far, the best done in any MMO.
Really, what I'm trying to get across is not to let your pre-conceived notions of what this game is (based on EA / Funcom / MMOs)prevent you from, at least, trying this gem for free.
Really I can't recall the last time when a dev/pub actually owned up to the problem being that their game was sub par.
It's almost unheard of, there is always an excuse that isn't their game. Its never that their (all these might not apply directly here but in general) "game was tepid" (Hey their mom said their game was cool) or their "business model was seriously outdated", nor that they "blew their dev money on marketing hype they couldn't deliver on" or what have you. It's that they were "ahead of their time" or "pirates" or "pirates" (yeah I used it twice since its such a goto scapegoat*)
This is an industry where their shit don't stink, every game they belch out is a solid gold AAA money printing machine! and if it isn't then PIRATES!
*I'm not saying piracy isn't a real problem but OMFG it is the GOTO excuse when anything hits the fan, ANYTHING! It almost reminds me of that classic fable involving a boy and a wolf >.>
You go on and on saying you want something different in an MMO, and once one comes out that is not only as different as you're likely going to get and also really, really good, you don't buy it.
The saddest part about it though is based on the game itself, they could have had one heck of an awesome viral typed marketing campaign behind it.
