The secret to Blizzard games is 'endless iteration' photo

You may have noticed that Blizzard takes a while to put out their games. Their two biggest releases coming up, Diablo III and StarCraft II, have been in development for what seems like ages. Often games that are in development for this long are stuck in the mire of game design, and may never see the light of day, so it's understandable that Gamasutra would raise the question of if "the development time has been extended to a surprising degree" when they talked with Blizzard lead content designer Kevin Martens. Martens thinks this is Blizzard's greatest advantage, however.

"Here's the secret to Blizzard games, and this is a secret that won't help any of our competitors: endless iteration," he explained. "We'll take something, we'll put it in the game. Maybe we'll like it when we put it in, maybe we won't. We'll leave it in there for a while, we'll let it percolate. We'll play it and play it and play it, and then we'll come back. We might throw it all out, or we'll throw half of that out and redo it."

Basically, being able to try things over and over and over again makes their games better. Seems pretty logical to me, even, dare I say it, obvious. Still, how many companies actually have all the time in the world to test out every option in every game. I guess that's why Martens isn't too scared to reveal this "secret."

Kotick put a knife to the Blizzard dev's nutsacks and made them say this.

I can't help but feel like agreeing with Magnalon. This really doesn't seem like something Blizzard would say if you've read a lot of their older interviews from pre-WoW*.

*Not insinuating that Blizzard sucked before WoW.

Endless iteration is the biggest problem I have with Blizzard games.

how does the Blizzard statement have any tinge of Kotick on it? They're basically saying "We don't release our games 'til they're done" which means endless testing/tweaking and the like. It's been Blizzard's stance all along, which I believe they ripped off from id "It'll be done when it's done"

I can't think of a Blizzard game that was subpar - their games are stellar. Have been playing them since I got the original warcraft: Orcs and humans on 4 floppy disks lol.

That's the thing I enjoy about Blizzard games. They're so refined it's sickening. When you purchase something Blizzard, you know you're getting some quality stuff, and it will more than likely run on your system day one. I'm fine with waiting for their endless iterations to yield a new game that'll guarantee a solid experience, similar to waiting for a hand-built bentley. Now, if only they iterate straight up LAN back into Starcraft II...

I love the way Blizzard does things, but at the same time you have to realize. They are afraid to deviate from this formula and it's kind of sad in a way. They have the money to do whatever they want, yet are afraid of something new. Everytime they come close Starcraft: Ghost, they fear it might not be liked. They've entered into a zone where the biggest monster is the one in the reflection and what it's perceived to be.

Well, now that comes as a suprise. Blizzard and Valve, two companies that pretty much only produce high-class-games are notorious for long developement cycles. A good game needs at least 3 years of dev and every year after that can add enormously to the quality (if done correctly of course).

I think it's just sad that other publisher don't join that idea and instead pressure their studios to release sub-par games.

Well thats the exact same thing that Todd Howard said when doing Fallout 3...they just put things in the game and played it, thats how they knew if things worked in game or not...

Hell, its not really a secret Blizzard...

By that logic, Duke Nukem Forever will be the best video game of all that that will even make God weep manly tears.

I'm very ticked at Blizzard right now. Got around to buying a gamecard (Yeah I'm a WoW addict) after about 2 months. Tried to log into my account ITS GONE, and still haven't got a hold of ANYONE that can help. I bought 3 games, and spent $15 for 5 months on it. Fuck.

I played Diablo II for over a year. Then I put it down, picked it up again and played a year more. Can you imagine this same dynamic with a movie? Watching a movie almost every day for a year and then again as much? Hell no.
I, for one, don't mind the long dev time if Blizzard is going to keep putting out crack like it has been. Mmmm... pure video crack. Good luck finding that in a movie.

Definitely adds to the whole, "Worth the wait" feel for their games. Them and Valve. True, I would love it if they released these games sooner so I can get my fix but I can't think of many other companies with a line of games that I would play a lot initially, stop playing for a few years, and then play a lot more again.

Okay, well I did start playing Chrono Trigger again for the "I've lost count" time.

I haven't played a Blizzard game in 12 years. I can't see wanting to play one in the near future either.

So, keep on not putting out games Blizzard, and I'll keep on not playing them.

Valve seems to have quite a bit of time too, but nothing like this.
