The rush that is Bad Company 2's multiplayer photo

The signature multiplayer mode from the original Battlefield: Bad Company, Gold Rush, is back in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Now simply called Rush, two teams battle it out on a slowly expanding map, where one side plays defense to protect valuable crates while the opposing team needs to destroy the crates.

Rush on through the jump to hear about the new toys you'll get to mess with, the new perk-like system and to see just how gorgeous Bad Company 2 is shaping up to be.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Xbox 360 [previewed], PlayStation 3, PC)
Developer: EA DICE
Publisher: Electronic Arts
To be released: March 2, 2010

Only one map, Arica Harbour, was available to play on, and you can't help but check the surroundings out the first time you jump into Bad Company 2. You can tell right off the bat that the Frostbite Engine has definitely been improved. There are mountains off in the distance and the ocean west of the map, and a ton of attention to detail is evident in the environment you'll be running around -- and completely demolishing -- during your rush to protect/destroy the crates.

Before and during matches, you'll be able to pick from one of four available classes: Assault, Engineer, Medic and Recon. Each class has a different set of weapons and Gadgets:

  • Assault: Uses automatics that have a secondary fire such as grenade launcher. The Assault class can also drop down ammo boxes for teammates to pick up.
  • Engineer: Uses automatics, most of which have suppressors. Gadgets include rocket launchers and a power drill that can be used to repair vehicles or kill others.
  • Medic: Uses high-powered machine guns such as a SAW. Gadgets include health packs and defibrillators. If a teammate is killed, there's a ten-second window in which a medic can revive a fallen player. And yes, you can also kill people with the defibrillator.
  • Recon: Uses sniper rifles; Gadgets include C4, sensor balls that increase your radar strenght or a handheld unit that can call in mortar strikes.

On top of those weapons, each class can hold a pistol of some kind as their secondary weapon, a couple of grenades, a knife and up to three Specs. Specs are basically what Perks are in Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare series. We only got to see a few Specs, such as better radar, increased armor on tanks and a better scope on the sniper. Hopefully we see a Spec for faster reload times, as it takes a ridiculously long time to reload your weapons.

Up to 24 people can play in the multiplayer on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Each side will spawn at their respective locations, where they'll have some weapon emplacements and vehicles waiting for them.

  • Tank: One player steers and uses the main gun and another player can use a turret.
  • Jeep: Rock 'n roll blasts from the stereo as one player drives, a couple of others ride in the passenger seats and one is in back on the turret.
  • ATV: Didn't stay on it long as the controls for the thing were horrible.
  • UAV Helicopter: Players will get on a machine that they use to control a UAV helicopter. The UAV can fire one missile at a time. It's great, but you can only fire a missile every 30 seconds or so. It'll last until either you get off the machine controlling it or the helicopter gets shot down.

As the attackers, you have a total of 100 lives between your team to take out all eight enemy crates in order to win. To destroy a crate, you need to plant an explosive charge on the thing or use the tank to shell it. When a explosive is planted on the crate, sirens go off, alerting the defensive team. They get a chance to disarm the bomb. If the first two crates are destroyed, two more will pop up somewhere further into the map, which also opens the map up more. The attacking team will also gain more lives for successfully destroying crates.

The defensive side has it pretty easy. All they need to worry about is defending the two crates from the attackers. They have infinite lives, and they also have the advantage of spawning near buildings, which provide some nice cover against the attackers (who tend to have to be out in the open to get near the crates in this level). Defenders just need to protect the crates and kill the attackers until they have no more lives left.

As you play, you'll earn medals, awards and experience points. The more experience you get, the more bonuses you'll be able to outfit your soldier with. You'll earn new weapons, new Gadgets and new Specs as you level up.

Fans of the original Bad Company will no doubt like the new features and improvements in Bad Company 2. The build I played was in the pre-alpha stage, so there were some issues here and there. Most of it was visual stuff, and it didn't hurt my experience with the game. My one complaint with what I got to play is that it sometimes takes a while to get from your spawn location to the action. There were a number of times when I would have to hoof it to where everyone was fighting, as all the vehicles were gone. It doesn't take too long to get to where you want to go; it's just boring, since there's no one to shoot until then.

Bad Company 2 will be out in March, but if you can't wait that long and own a PlayStation 3, then you're in luck! There will be a multiplayer beta on November 17 of the level and mode I just previewed here. Be sure to check out the beta announcement post to see where you'll be able to get your hands on a beta code.

Your filing system is beginning to confuse me.

I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter but...

This is filed under PC yet you previewed the 360 version
Dragon Age's TMT is filed under PS3 yet the version being 'tasted for ten minutes' was the 360 version

I think I need to lie down...

This game looks AWESOME! I've actually canceled my pre-order on COD:MW2 because this and MAG will by my online games for next year. I hope I get in on the beta, but if not, I can wait it out.

They clearly renamed the mode due to the stigma placed on precious gold that has stemmed from tough economic times.

When will it end I ask. when will it end.

This multiplayer WILL be better than MW2's. Just like Bad Company's multiplayer was better than CoD4. I WILL FIGHT ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE!

The only thing that I'm scared of is if they return the original cast in the story mode or not.

I want my haggard and sweetwater damnit.

the classes are how dice set them up in 2142. it works well, but medics shouldn't have frags as they get too many points for just healing people. TF2 taught a lot about not giving every class grenades.

It looks like I just found my replacement for MW2 multiplayer on the PC. This looks really good.

The thing which surprised me the most is that the weapons actually sounded like their real-life counterparts, which is rare in video games.

Another sequel that is a patched version of the original???

I love DICE and I love the Frostbite engine. The game looks solid and very polished. Sadly, I just don't see enough here to earn my $59.99. Having owned Bad Company for the 360, BC2 comes across as an expasion pack that should be $29.99. They cleaned up the models, added some new maps and a few minor tweaks but it's essentially the same game.

What happened to the days when DICE and EA would provide large maps that allowed you to drive and fly around without worrying about running off the map. The map sizes are too small to properly support vehicles, especially in the former "gold" gamestyle. In this day and age, it's open world or BUST. Don't put 16 guys into a shoebox and ask them to shoot it out!!

It's not cool how if you get the limited edition version you get things that other people can never get. That's how people get raped. LOL.

All of the effects are really well done, particularly when he shot the tank at close range or anyone ALMOST got shelled.
