The rumors are true: HDMI-equipped Premium 360 found on sale (Updated) photo

Yesterday, Dale reported on a rumor originating at Ars Technica which suggested that Microsoft might be fitting new Xbox 360s out with HDMI capability as standard rather than reserving the luxury for the Elite model. Speculation was that the new versions of the console would start to quietly appear in stores around the end of this month, but it seems no-one told the 360s that.

A buyer in Australia has just become the smuggest man alive by unpacking his newly purchased Premium machine to find an HDMI port on the back, fully referenced by the instruction manual. So far we haven't got any confirmation on whether or not the 65nm processor has come along for the party, but all in all, this is great news to those of us wondering how long we'd have to hold off buying one of the beauties.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be annoying the staff in Gamestation by asking to inspect every machine in their warehouse.

[Update: Microsoft has released official confirmation in an e-mail to Shacknews, which said:

Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience. Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand.

It seems the HDMI capability is limited to the Premium line though, as the e-mail also stated

We have not announced any plans to add HDMI to the Xbox 360 Core System.

And as for the issue of the smaller processor,

We are constantly updating the console’s more than 1700 internal components and therefore will not comment on details of specific components or manufacturing processes

Pesky blighters.]

And by not releasing this information, arguably everyone who bought an Xbox 360 in the last month or so, got royally fucked in the ass.

Looks like my 360 will be turning one year in about 10 more days. I wonder how I'll celebrate. (*i wont by buying any new games for awhile) but I will figure out some way to make its birthday worthwhile.

Hopefully we will find if there's the long awaited extra processor, and our 360's wont implode by xmas.

HDMI is nice, but they need to move the optical audio port.

I want to care, but my TV can only handle 1080i, so this doesn't really affect me. Also my 360 is still running fine (*touch wood*), and I doubt us Brits would get this thing before this time next year. Apparently Microsoft are too good for Europe.

Every day it seems current 360 owners are getting screwed by Microsoft. I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay for a new 360, and if mine breaks again I better get one of these new ones.

O.k. I DON'T work for MS, but as a company, would you advertise something people "perceive" as "better" to be released? Would you as a consumer wait for something your were told was better if it was a few months/weeks away? Hell no! So is MS a charity or a business? For those of you in the corporate world, who would like to tell the board that sales went to ZERO after announcing a better product, same price was being released in a few weeks? Are you fucking morons? Has anyione actually studied capitalism? Should we expect MS to play their cards early so we can get an HDMI that we may or may not get sometime in the future?

Fuck, sometimes I think most people are retarded. I think most people lie about having HDMI ALMOST as much as about having sex, or are too stupid to know what it is and comment about it anyway.

By the way, I feel the same way about anything like this, not just for MS. I run a business to make money, not so I can give it to idiots...

Yet another reason to not buy that piece of crap. Phase it out already, MS! Why even mention it??

I'm fairly sure this is the Falcon 360. I read in an article that they were going to roll out the Falcon with an HDMI port in late August or early September and that they would soft launch it.

Here's the article: http://gamer.blorge.com/2007/08/07/dont-buy-that-console-falcon-xbox-360-to-land-by-september/

Quick question, I don't know anything about all the high definition stuff except that it looks purty, but I notice that my monitor(a 19 inch lcd that came with my HP computer) has a dvi-d port. Would I be able to hook the hdmi cable to that?

s0lesurviv0r: Yes, with an HDMI->DVI adapter. It's what I do with my 360 because I suck and don't have an HDTV.

SniperFodder, you bring up an important topic in the technology world sometimes called the "Osbourne effect", which is when a companies' current product stops selling when the company announces a better product that is coming soon (which, more or less, happened to the Osbourne computer company). So yes, Microsoft was right (at least, in their interests) in NOT announcing this at all, because 360's wouldn't sell very well at all until this new model arrived.

Still, this isn't enough for me to get a 360. I'm not considering a purchase of the system until all problems are solved, if that ever happens. I'd sooner get a PS3, solely because they don't break as often (if at all), not because the PS3 has any more redeeming qualities (like games, the one thing the PS3 lacks).

I still have my Launch Unit, And my TV only supports up to 1080i. But I would still like this new Xbox,

Do I feel screwed over? Notsomuch, I have a perfect launch unit, i have played many many games on my 360. I feel as if i have gotten my moneys worth this past year and a half

The fact that M$ isn't including the HDMI in the core tells me it's going bye bye (as it should). I'm assuming there no difference between the non-hdmi premium and the core console other than the lack of a HDD (I'm talking about just the console, not the accessories), so the fact that the core doesn't get hdmi either means M$ will either begin to produce 3 different machines, or just let the core sell out.

Any idea if well be getting these with the new 65nm chips in Europe soon? I was planning on trading up at the end of August and getting me a new 360 (Elite perhaps) but if these bad-boys are out i might have to rethink...

@Jimmy Reds.

I think it's actually got HAM mode, allowing 4096 colours on-screen at once - but only on a stationary image.

I got a noob question. If I pick one of them up can I put the old hard drive in the new one without any issues? Then just put the new one on the old system and sell it without fucking up any warranty issues?

It's been pretty much confirmed that the new premiums with HDMI also have the additional heat sink, as well as the 65nm processor. You can check for yourself, even if you don't want a HDMI premium, by looking at the serial number on the box. If the first three digits are 728, they should have the heat sink as well as the 65nm. 728=28th week of 2007.

hdmi - I doubt I will see a difference from VGA, it looks pretty good to me. The new heatsink or processor will interest more. Its too early to see if these have any other issues.

Yeah, if you're looking for one of these, Target seems to be the place. I just picked one up from the local Target over here (Utah), and mine's got the HDMI jack in the back. It doesn't come with a cable, though, so just prepare for that.

Like someone else has said, it's a way to keep sales up of the current systems so they can clear them out. That way more of these HDMI systems will be on shelves. It's brutal, but good at the same time.
