The Resident Evil games that never were

     Gameboy

Tipster BlindsideDork recently shared some interesting videos with us -- none of them could be considered anything approaching official, but since when did a video have to be legitimate to entertain?

The above video is supposedly taken from the aborted Game Boy Color port of the original Resident Evil. At the time of its cancellation, Capcom cited the port's poor quality as the reason for its abandonment. If this video is legitimate, it's not hard to see where they were coming from.

But that's not all Blindside gave us -- not by a long shot. After the jump, you'll see Chris Redfield's GBC experience, an RE-themed Beats of Rage mod, and a Game Boy Advance tech demo showing the system's ability to run Resident Evil 2.

Next up, the Chris Redfield GBC demo. Evidently, a day in the life of Chris Redfield involves a lot more walking through doors than does Jill's.

Next, the Beats of Rage mod Crisis Evil, which can be downloaded here, but you can evidently only play it with a Dreamcast. If you don't have one, sorry -- just enjoy Paint it Black.

Finally: a Game Boy Advance tech demo, showing off the GBA's ability to run PSX-era games like Resident Evil 2. This isn't footage from an abandoned port, but rather the result of some independent coding whiz-kids who wanted to show what the Blueroses Engine could do. You may remember that the Blueroses Engine also recreated the entire first area in Metal Gear Solid.

I remember really looking forward to that gbc resi game back in the day. The videos do look legit, based on screens of it I remember seeing. Looks like it probably would have played pretty terribly anyway.

That GBA thing is mighty impressive though.

it's shocking how the scene with the zombie's head turning around (something that gave me nightmares for 3 years when i was a kid) loses all of it's charm in a shit hole game system

Heh! Back in 1998 when I was 15 or so, I was looking forward to the GBC iteration. I didn't own a PSX and the Saturn version was soooo rare it was near impossible to find.

Kinda impressive use of a GBC, but it's cancellation was for the best. It can't even hold up to the PS1 version, much less the superb Gamecube remake.

When a soul is condemned to hell, its hands will be fastened to a Game Boy Color and forced to play Resident Evil until the end of all existence.

Resident Evil Crisis tra-la-la!
Thus ends my halfa-haiku....
brad drac's Avatar

-> Turbo: I feel it's only right to inform you, your haiku structure is way off. They're meant to have 5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second, and 5 on the third. Eg.:
From house a stick man
Evolved through quite odd means
Kung-fu fights a truck

-> momiji: Not quite. Lucasarts classics had character, style and top quality animation. GBC resi just looks ugly.

Brad--->

I knew it wasn't a fully developed haiku, hence my personal nomenclatural coining of the term "halfa-haiku". And it probably isn't even a correct half...

What is this "sleep" you speak of? Destructoid does not sleep. He doesn't even wait. He's too busy ruining other people's shit to do anything but.

I wasn't able to look at the first video, but the second one looked like a crappy copy of Maniac Mansion. Why did they put so much effort into that when they could have been publishing Shantae 2?!? Blast me and my hope for lesser known handheld games. I bet you could modify Terry Bogard's Garou sprite for a Crisis Evil 4. The GBA demo was interesting.

Man. I've been playing beats of rage games all day. ALL DAY. LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO MY DAY.

But, seriously, you brightened it ten thousand percent. I left my cunt of an ex girlfriend and was feeling shitty. I saw this, broke out the dreamcast and hooked it up. Space Channel 5 part 2 was in there so I played that. Within seconds I was smiling.

Then I played beats of rage mods ALL DAY.
When you beat Crisis Evil you can play a special Dino Crisis mode.

But Destructoid. Thanks. You've made my day and everything. I owe you guys.

Resident Evil 1.5 looked cool. I would of rather of had this one than the resident evil 2 that came out. ( i still like resident evil 2, don't get me wrong. )

the dark version of Resident Evil 4 was awesome.
It seems that sometimes Capcom doesn't want to release any good versions........
