If you have no immediate plans on going next-gen until you pay off student loans and your little sister, you're probably curious about the welfare of your beloved PS2. The system has maintained dominance for nearly a decade, so we can expect a slow paradigm shift long before it becomes the exclusive property of third world countries. Businessweek has interviewed a variety of PS2 publishers whom all mutually agree that the system is far from dead. An analyst has even claimed that the console will continue to lead the pack for two more years. Here are the cliff's notes:
* Wedbush Morgan Securities believes the PS2 will be dominant into 2008
* Sega's CEO Simon Jeffery says the PS2 can still drive the most game sales in 2007; will be releasing games late into the year.
* Sony is expected to sell another 11 million PS2s next year, but only half as many PS3s
* Square Enix is releasing Kindgom Hearts II: Final Mix on the PS2, as will Ubisoft with their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie spinoff.
* Other publishers are expected to sell ports well into 2007
Do I believe the PS2 will be the best selling console of 2007? Nah. My bet is on the Wii simply based its sellout records on Amazon, which occur in seconds. Despite a slow Q1 game schedule; it's the hot pop ticket. Analysts schmanalists.
Nevertheless, it's safe to say the system will have at least one more decent year before it slowly begins sinking into the bargain bin abyss ... maybe even two. How long before you move on?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I wouldn't be shocked at all to see the PS2 remain a top seller all year.
Anyhow, yeah, there's a lot of good stuff yet on the way. http://www.destructoid.com/life-after-next-gen-for-your-ps2-24967.phtml
Besides the big titles we already know about, hopefully the PS2 will get better 3rd-party games than the GBA did in it's twilight.
God of War
Rouge Galaxy
those are probably the two biggest games im looking forward too, not to mention a few titles like Tales of the Abyss that i still want to get my hands on
only problem is convicing myself that its better than buying a new game for my DS, 360, Wii cause god forbid mass effect or Bioshock, Metroid, come out around that same time!
There's tons of upcoming titles and past titles I've yet to get to before I put the ol' PS2 in the storage room.
Those of us who spend a lot of time lapping up the details of the consoles see a difference between "last gen" and "next gen." For most people, it's all the same. 95% of videogamers are not hardcore, meaning they mostly like videogames, will read reviews, will watch the occasional game trailer, but don't geek out about all of the details. Geeks are NOT in the mainstream.
We are geeks.
Take a cellphone geek, for example. Most of us want a phone that maybe has a camera or something, is kind of cool looking, and is reasonably priced. That's 95% of cellphone users. But the cellphone geeks are up on EXACTLY which phone has how many megapixels, bluetooth, and all of the bells and whistles that the average user doesn't even see a need for.
I mean there are people who geek out about car stereos, kitchen devices, lamps, shoes, coffee, you name it. Most of us have an area or two where we geek out, but for most of us, we don't need a $3,000 espresso machine and a $60/pound bag of beans. We just want a cup and that's it.
When you walk into a Best Buy and see an entire aisle of PS2 games for $20 each and a console for $130, and then you see a PS3 section with eight games for $60 each and a console for $600, how is this even a contest?
I think buying a PS2 is the best choice for gamers, hardcore and not right now. The Wii has ONE game -- Zelda -- and that's available on the GC. And the PS3 has ONE game -- Resistance -- which is just a high-res me-too of the other 10,000 FPSs out there.
Right now, you can get a hell of a lot of playing value out of a DS and a PS2.
And most people are.
The numbers support that.
I doubt we'll see it over in the states. Not that I would mind, I would love to get Final Mix over here.

I can't wait to get persona 3 and i hope because its comeing out in june that they put the expatiation pack
http://ps2.ign.com/objects/868/868820.html ( 30 hours of gameplay added to persona 3 kick ass!)
I'm also looking forward to Rouge Galaxy and metal slug for the ps2
sony might as well stockpile ps3s for a few years with the sales they're likely to get.
This same reasoning is part of what moved me to buy a Wii at launch (which I have never done before). My GC back catalog is small in comparison to my PS2 but exists none the less. By buying the Wii, I maintain the ability to play my cube games that I have yet to make time for, while simultaneously getting that fucking ugly purple box out of my TV room for good. I love my cube and I never thought I would be so happy to unplug it as I was when I got my Wii.
Needless to say I plan on keeping this PS2 working for a while.
