While the galaxy was able to experience a moment of triumph, the Reaper problem wasn’t solved in the original Mass Effect. In its sequel, these massive constructs are making a bit of a return, but not in a traditional way: the Reapers are influencing and creating new enemies that Commander Shepard and crew will have to face.
In the above developer diary for Mass Effect 2, we’re shown a few new enemies that will debut in the game. The first of which are the Collectors, an advanced race of beings who are kidnapping entire colonies of humans. As explained, they roll in a perhaps Reaper-enhanced ship and use bugs to subdue their victims. The latter bit of information is fitting for the characters -- these dudes look like insects themselves and are connected to some sort of hive mind like bees or whatever.
Other enemies introduced in the trailer are weird human-infused Husk abominations, as well as a wicked large robot, which looks like a sci-fi improved version of an ED-209. (Think about it.)
And then there’s Legion, a Geth disconnected and obsessed with Shepard. We may have seen him before in the first teaser trailer for Mass Effect 2, which brings all of this totally full circle, man. Full circle.
"Organics do not choose to fear us, it is a function of your hardware."
Please please please for the love of god let me beat that geth up and recruit him into the team. It would be like rolling with a more advanced version of HK-47. Which would be AWESOME.
Yay! I was beginning to worry that they had just abandoned the Reaper storyline for the sequel, because not a single trailer I'd seen before this even mentioned them.
Fuck yeah!!!! This game is gonna kick so much ass! I'm tempted to go and preorder my CE on Amazon right now but I may be getting a few more $5 and $10 off coupons. Hurry up Amazon!
Anyhow I would also like to point out that this is a rare time when the whole "This time...IT'S DARKER! WOO!!" thing actually looks like it's gonna work.
Bioware seems to be running a near flawless hype campaign on this game. It's really good to see some variety in the enemies and some that might just give Uber Shep a challenge.
For this whole 'darker' angle to work out, they're really going to need to punch up the writing and with that make some more obvious changes to how the dialogue system works.
Also. I'm a little concerned that making the game a better pew-pew-shooter may detract from the methodical elements of combat the first game tried (which honestly didn't work because the AI never behaved like you should play the game carefully and thoughtfully).
But I'm liking the look of the new enemy types. I'm just hoping their attack patterns won't frustrate me so much that I have to abandon every other combat strategy other than grenades and assault rifles.
About that writing though, I gotta say, there were some chills when I heard,
'We do not experience fear. But we understand how it effects you.'
But that could have just been the editing.
Grenades? Oh, you mean the cute little exploding frisbies that you couldn't buy at a merchant? The ones you used the BACK button to throw and then detonate? Seriously...you used those? Wow.
Wait a sec. Wasn't there another insect like race in Mass Effect 1? You had to choose to save or kill one after that big Asari battle. So there is two insectoid races? I figured the choice you made in ME 1 would reflect in ME 2.
So I'm about a week late on this story but I've been busy.
I got pumped up watching Legion. Although not exactly the same, it reminds me of how the Borg were able to begin thinking on their own once they met Lore. Also 7 of 9. If Legion doesn't join I will be very disappointed.
The collectors look neat. do want the CE version armor. gotta call gamestop and hope its not too late to have my pre-order changed over.
