Full details of the Sony and Immersion settlement photo
     Technology

So we know Sony and Immersion kissed and made up. What wasn't stated though was how much this has cost Sony. Now we know:

Sony Corp. has agreed to pay Immersion Corp. $150.3 million in ending a patent infringement suit in which the latter company claimed the consumer electronics giant used its technology in the PlayStation videogame console.

That's not all.

In a separate, but related agreement, Sony has licensed Immersion technology for $22.5 million, the spokeswoman said.

That's a lot of money to pay for rumble. Hopefully, Sony will learn to turn their image around and make up this loss.

that may not be the official real reason. But i am sure a $150 million lawsuit doesn't help.

well... if sony is so uprightous about their statements, I sure hope not to see any rumblers coming to the PS3 for their integrity sake.

They will totally loose all integrity if they now go from:

"We didnt want the Rumbler cuz its so last gen" to

"Look everyone! BRAND NEW GEN! Rumbler controllers, for the cheap cheap price of 300$!!!"

I will be very dissapointed if they switch their lies. They can shove up their arses that rumbler ever comes out and see if it vibrates there....

Did SCEA project a loss of 150 million this quarter? So they're now, what, 300 mill in the whole? And how many PS3s do they need to seel? And how many games each?

Ouch.

@Crunshii: Well, as far as I’m concerned, they don’t have too much integrity left, so they might as well go for broke (pun intended) with the whole rumble thing. Not only did they pay the lawsuit fees, but they also gave Immersion an additional $22.5 million to license the technology, which means they plan on using it — I assume they’ve got engineers working on it as I type this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were sitting pretty with some good PR for the first time in a while. (I’m not counting their backing down on the Kotaku fiasco as “good PR” — it never should’ve happened in the first place.)

I'd hate to see how much a new controller with rumble costs considering current costs for controllers.. Although rumble is nice, I don't see it as essential. I think that the tilt control has much more potential than rumble ever did.

That seems to be the story with the ps3 though, lots of potential.. I can't wait until games start coming out that use this potential.

BTW, PS3 owner..

@ Orcist: A better question might be "How many Blu-Ray movies do they have to sell?"

Phil Harrison and Jack Tretton told me I didn't want or need that last gen rumble garbage. I'm so confused now.

$150 million will pay for the development of a very powerful high-tech chipset capable of billions of instructions per second.

Apparently, it also covers the idea of electric motors with weights attached to them.

Well, out of their financial loses. It looks like it's good news for Sony.

Improbable, yes, but it happened.

i thought they said Rumble caused interference with
the SixAxis technology?
will everyone have to buy two kinds of controllers now?

Sony sure thinks up so many ways to screw fans...

where are the games Sony?!?!?

Perhaps the next "version" of the PS3/SIXAXIS will be with rumble, but throw out the PS2 backwards compatibility. 1 step forward, 2 steps back?

I'll be happy when they finally get rumble back into their controllers for the PS3 (unless of course it does cause problems in its functionality).

This'll spun in a few ways:

1. They gave into their customers demands eventhough Sony thought rumble was unnecessary now.

2. They finally made rumble to work with motion control.

the 22 million is probably for the PS2s they are currently selling..... and for the foreseeable future it looks like.
