I played the demo today for the Sonic Generations, and sorry but it didn't do anything for me. The music was ok, but the gameplay was meh. Lots of typical modern sonic bugs too.
A good Sonic games needs to have gameplay similar to thw original ones, have Sonic be the only character and fire his voice actor, make him a mute. Then, and only then, I would play Sonic again.
Still. I'd like to see these two sonics stay alive and I love variety their duo existences wield. The 3D can use some refining but I hate when people dismiss them entirely. I think with colors some steps were being made in a good direction and I'd like to not see Sega all together give up
Also if perfect virtual reality is ever invented, Sonic games will be the best things in the world.
Modern Sonic is sort of like an action hero type character, compared to the more "Disney-esque" classic version. And, just as there are different versions of Mario (regular, Paper, Mario & Luigi), I think there is most definitely room for both versions of Sonic.
Going on gameplay, I think I prefer Classic Sonic for 2D stuff, and Modern Sonic for 3D-- to elaborate on that last point, I also mean I prefer Classic Sonic gameplay to that of Sonic Rush, which seems to more or less try to blend the two styles.
The only modern Sonic game (excluding the GBA and DS titles) that I found even remotely interesting was Sonic and the Secret Rings, but mainly because it's gameplay didn't give you a headache.
Also, a lot of those 3D games aged terribly. Have you gone back to play the first Sonic Adventure?
However, I recently picked up Sonic Rush Adventure, and I ended up getting finishing all the missions and gathered all the Chaos and Sol Emeralds. Suffice to say, I fucking love the work DIMPS has done. I suppose Sonic Rush Adventure has a similar layout to the classic Sonic games, but it's more quickly paced, and uses the modern Sonic.
So I suppose I vote modern Sonic for the sole reason that DIMPS exists
My care for the appearance bit, though, is barely there. New-er new Sonic is ok, he's not the "XTREME" mess that Sonic from Sonic Adventure was. I had just wished they would settle on a bloody gameplay mechanic for the series. They seem to have done that, though, from Sonic Unleashed going forward. I will say that I prefer Sonic Adventure's 3D gameplay to this race track shit, but whatever :P
In my mind there should be both, one style shouldn't be abandoned over the other.
@King Sigy
It did when you got stuck and manoeuvring Sonic became akin to shifting a sofa in a narrow hallway.
I really don't like either very much but if I have to choose, it'd be "modern" coz he looks "lean" and not like a fat child off of his ritalin. Call me crazy but that's just not a cool look.
So I think the best thing to do would be to have Modern Sonic design and gameplay rocking up in full retail titles, have the hybrid switching between 2.5D-3D perspectives because I'm really enjoying that, continue to experiment with gimmicks but in a less "THIS GAME EXISTS TO PLAY THIS GIMMICK" (like SU with Werehog and SotBK with Swords) and more "this gimmick compliments the gameplay" (like Colours and the abilities, and every Mario game ever).
New characters should probably stop being added but don't be afraid to use the existing ones (more in a story and maybe play like 1 or 2 levels/multiplayer modes as them aspect), stories should be more light hearted (like Colours again) and as much as I love Eggman, I really enjoy his current design and personality, his name really should revert to Robotnik just so he can at least SEEM intimidating sometimes, Bowser can still a complete failure and even sometimes stupid in Mario but he can also pull of intimidating and feirce, Eggman tries that but then you hear Sonic say his name.
Now as I still love Classic Sonic gameplay I think this StH 4 thing is a step in the right direction, digital titles featuring Classic gameplay but Modern design is good. Obviously 4 is far from perfect and the Episode thing should probably be ditched (or the price should be reduced per Episode) but with refinement I could really shine. There's even potential for "once X amount of Classic digital offerings exist we could do a retail disc release" if need be.
I would really love to go down to a store and get the latest retail Sonic and come home to play a full blown console outing that has had time and care put into it to keep all the corny charm that Modern Sonic has, the voice acting, cut scenes, gameplay and music that Modern outings usually offer are all there and intact. I would then also love to feel nostalgic and jump onto PSN/XBLA/WW/etc. and download a nice lengthy Classic offering with the slightly slower gameplay, alternate routes, amazing music (Sonic 2) and bare bones story of just "Robotnik is evil, stop him!".
tl;dr both styles of gameplay are good and I think SEGA are heading in the right direction, I just hope they keep on the right track and there needs to be only one design for Sonic that is actively used and I think that's Modern.
Also bring Tails and Knuckles back as playable kthx.
The quality began to improve ever since Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Colors was even better. I think Sonic Generations is actually a safe move by SEGA as it's based on the good parts of Sonic Unleashed without featuring anything new. After this they will once again have to go back to the drawing board and figure out where Sonic will be next.
I completely agree with you on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I have yet to see a Sonic game top that.
However, i call foul on your claim that Sonic Adventure 1 is better than Sonic Adventure 2. Three words: Big the Cat.
As far as gameplay goes, I see the potential in 3D Sonic but they've veered far enough away from platforming-even in Sonic's sections-that I don't really see it as a 3D iteration of the classic series. Racing style levels make sense but they'd be a lot more palatable if they were used to break up the action in lieu of slow shooting stages or treasure hunts. Remember, the original Sonic games were platformers first. They had an element of speed but it was something you were rewarded with for memorization and skilled play, it wasn't a given. That was all marketing. I think Sega needs to remember what made it good in the first place and stop buying into their own hype.
So I think I did a good job of showing that I'm biased toward the 2D iterations. Let me put it like this: I still go back and play Sonic 1-3 every once in a while from start to finish, collecting all the emeralds and what have you. While I enjoyed both Sonic Adventure games when they were released, I can't stand them now. The Sonic Advance games, on the other hand, have a very similar appeal to me as the original games, though-and this is pretty ironic-they focus too much on speed, all except the third one. It's the one Sonic game on the GBA that I'd say is on par with the originals, and unfortunately I've yet to try the Rush series.
