The PS3 is alive and might kill you: Rise of the machines indeed photo

Those guys at the hairy shack have posted a scary new story about the PlayStation 3 achieving what can only be sensationally described as human intelligence. Three UC Irvine students hooked three PS3s together, resulting in the number three being a used a whole lot. A more interesting side-effect was that this dark marriage gave the PS3 human brainpower, allowing it to solve problems in the way that we do.

The group's findings, which were showcased at the 2007 Power Architecture Developer Conference in Austin, Texas focused on reproducing brain algorithms. Brain algorithms are intricate step-by-step problem-solving procedures performed by the brain to complete everyday functions.

It is currently unknown whether or not the Blu-rays had a hand in this, but should the PlayStation 3 become self aware, we can be sure that it will enhance your Talladega Nights experience, and could possibly improve all Will Ferrell movies played on the machine.

Obviously, the news that the PlayStation 3 can mimic brain patterns is scary and should cause mass hysteria as we contemplate a future where human slaves serve cakes to their steel masters (robots eat cakes) in a dystopian realm not-unlike that seen in the Your Matrixes or Look Who's Terminator Too films.

I always knew Kaz Hirai looked like a cyborg.

A shame that they had to cut out backwards compatibility with the new PS3s. Then we could've had monkey brains as well!

Come now. This is clear bollocks.

Are these people saying that 3 PStttripple are more powerfull than the supercomputers people studying this stuff actually use?

i get the feeling that the purpose of the ps3's development took a weird turn somewhere in mid-development when someone got the idea that hey, maybe the functions of the ps3 are beyond gaming and just ran with the idea. the justification of the ps3 was gaming but the actual reason was R&D of how far they could take the technology.

That would be cool, if brain algorithms actually were proven to exist and all that. Nice step in the right direction tho, maybe we'll have functional brain mimicking within the next 250 years after all ;)

HAI KIDZ it's the PS3 it is smart enough to kill you.
but it also plays games!!

maybe the ps3 is now smart enough to realize it's too goddamn expensive and it'll declare war on sony and kill them all so it can live free!

so..... The moral of the story:
3 PoS3's = 1,800 USD
Human mind MUST then = 1,800... Plus a fair amount of tweaking, programing, and it STILL needs moar blast processing!

Who cares if the PS3 can replicate brain functions? How will that help me play games and watch DVDs? That's great that it's smart and all, but I'll stick to something that I can enjoy (like the 360) rather than something that can replicate brain algorithms. Sony, thanks for ruining another gaming console.

Iam glad I own all 3 systems. If I only owned the ps3 Id be frustrated. RIght now I only use it for the great bluray player it is. Stunning hidef no doubt. I play games on my 360. Between the Orange Box, Halo 3, and COD4 in 3 weeks I am not even sure when I will play games on my ps3. Hopefully Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank will meet their expectations unlike everything else released this year. So I say all that to say Iam sick of hearing about all the non game stuff the ps3 can do.

That's pretty fascinating. I'm sure there will be hackers figuring out how to get their PS3 to do homework and read books soon...

First and fore most... no, three ps3's are not more powerful than the supercomputers used for complex data analysis, it's just that those cluster and super computers are more powerful, exponentially, than the human brain.

As far as the power of the PS3 to incite fanboyisim, I'd think they should do a study on that... just how many fanboyz does it take to incite a PS3 / xbox riot... At what rate does the flame war grow with the addition of different mixtures and densities of fanboyisims, important things like that, not how to understand the inner workings of the brain and it's inherent functions... that's kids stuff...

And lastly, this only goes to show that your mind isn't as complex as you think... stop resisting and give in to your machines... they love you and will protect your nasty meaty flesh from harm, if you just give in.......

Personnaly I doubt i'll own a Ps3 but I have nothing against it. Ideally all games would be cross platform so I don't miss good ones. It's only that when the news about the console it a movie, it shows a lack of good games.

Why stop at 3? Why not...5? Humans might go extinct after the Great Sony War led by the PS3 General, but the PSPeople could make use of the knowledge we've gathered over thousands of years and it would be in the name of science...

Maybe if the PS3 becomes self aware it will have the sense to tell Sony to bundle the rumble controller with the PS3 or perhaps even give itself backwards capability... I'm just saying...

Hell, brain functions, folding, a 'super' network (for the future). That's just f'n wonderful. Too bad it's next to useless as a game console. Good job Sony.

Maybe it will have the sense to put out more games and less bull shit.
