The PS3 can now eat money via USB

1:57 PM on 01.25.2007   |   Niero

The East received a PS3 firmware update yesterday that, among other things, allows Edy (a Japanese prepaid credit card product) to be accepted as a payment method on the PS3 network via a USB adapter, shown in the photo above. The cash cards seem to be disposable, which is fitting for the person that also threw away their money buying the accessory instead of programming a Visa via keypad like normal people. Maybe this makes using stolen credit cards easier. It's also the wrong color and a leading cause of herpes in Osaka.

Other firmware updates include better WiFi security, Korean character input improvements, and so on. Unfortunately, the updated firmware did nothing to resolve China's one child per family policy. Press release translation after the jump, as are 3 additional photos of how the Edy USB dongle works within the OS.

Yes they could, as could the other consoles. But they won't.

The market is ripe for a USB shirt iron that I can use with my PS3. Or maybe USB tire pump

I'm working on a USB griddle that you can plug into your PS3 and cook dinner while you play.

Golly gee, only $600, no games, compatibility with the PSP doorstop, AND a credit card reading peripheral?

Where can I purchase one of these marvelous devices?

Wow, Sony actually believes that we still have money to spend after buying a PS3.

Their optimism never ceases to amaze me..

Can't they just get some bloody new games on the system that are worth a damn. I got bored playing resistance and now I'm back to playing Playstation 2 games that I missed out on... god this system is so fricken useless right now.

Does anyone remember the Blue Card reader from American Express that was supposed to revolutionize e-commerce shopping? I still have that thing somewhere in my closet. It's about as practical as having an analog phone built into your car -- there's just better technologies out there that make the idea stupid.

Why don't they make a coin receptacle so you can make micropayments one penny at a time.
