That's right, you miserable wankbiscuits. The Podcastle is almost upon us once more, and this time we're talking about print journalism. If you know your EDGE from your gamesTM, this is the episode for you. If you don't, however, we will still have the usual serving of vulgarity and emotional abuse.
Jim Sterling, Wardrox and Atheistium proudly introduce the returning Phoenix Blood (and I know that's not how she spells it) because sex sells and we are cynical marketing men. Plus, she knows quite a bit about games magazines, I am told.
We will be recording at 8pm GMT on Tuesday, so get in your user questions and comments. We'll see you there!
Jim Sterling serves as reviews editor for Destructoid.com, head of the Podtoid podcast, and produces a number of news stories, original features, one-of-a-kind videos. With his passionate argumentative style, controversial opinions, harsh delivery, and dedication to brutal honesty Sterling is a name that you can't help but recognize.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also, Tertiee: It's coming. It should hopefully be the next one.
Though the fact that they all tend to be about £5 meant I used to just read mr.biffos column in Edge in a WH Smith instead of buying the thing.
I've enever looked at printed magazines since I got the interweb..... No computer mags (they are a month out of date when you read them), pr0n mags (with big american teeties, but MOAR on teh net) or ANY mags...I mean just why?).
For example I saw a D.I.Y. book reduced from £25 to £5 in W.H. Smith and I nearly bought it seeing as I just moved into a shell of a house and need to redecorate it all to be livable..... then I thought I could buy a 2nd hand classic game for that and all the information I need for D.I.Y. (or anything else) I can simply grab from the interweb anyway.
Why read how to tile when you can stream a video showing you how to as you do it.
Oops I degress...
Anywhoo, I still have the 1st ever edition of CRASH magazine for the ZX Spectrum, it is my retirement fund (I hope, as it is still worth nothing atm).
Like delicious, chewy chocolate chip rape perhaps?
I mean, cookies...
Why not 'Video' game reviews?
Am I missing something?
Just I find video reviews alot more informative, quicker and easier to take in.
Less writing and more video review PLEAZ!111oneone
Also, what is the print world like for gamers in Europe? Are there a lot of magazines? Few? What are they like?
2.EDGE costs too much.
I do think the system of distribution of games mags in the U.K, is also what keeps many of them breathing, because they are mostly sold on the newsstands. The mag situation is different in the U.S, because its based on a weird subscription model more than newsstands.
As a result Future's Edge mag has seen many magazines bite the dust. I think I began buying Edge in 1994, and while its changed a lot, its core seriously deep but humourous eye on the games industry will always have it a cut above most U.K mags.
Ok, now seriously, my question:
I´ve noticed that some hardcore gamers seem to fear the causal gamers as somekind of a corrupting element that is about to destroy the artistic character of videogames.
Why do you think this is happening?
In my opinion this is as ridicolus, as a cineast bitching about blockbusters destroying the artistic charcater of movies.
@xe-cute
Just go to gametrailers you lazy person ;)
I think it´d would just take much more time to make a video review, so there´d be that.
And there are still ppl like me who prefer a written review.
Kidding.
I was actually wondering what you think magazines could do to stay relevant in todays "Web 2.0" world, where many publications are often a month or so behind with their reviews and previews.
I'm partial to the idea of focusing on content that isn't time sensitive, such as interviews and editorials. Who reads reviews anyway? Seriously, ONLY an 8 out of 10? I'd have gone lower, but thats because I don't have Rockstar BALLS DEEP in my naughty place.
On the issue of credibility, do you think that people still hang onto that if something is publicly printed, it gives credence to it comparatively to something posted on the wild, untamed Interwebs? Or is this changing as we see even big networks fucking up even the simplest of things and chasing off the humble magazine and TV watcher?
And how would you like writing for one?
I'm sure they will only do it if you ask them to "snog" each other.
Also, do you rememeber "Playstation MAX"? They liked poo.
Who would win in a fight?..Jim or wardrox?
What was it like meeting each other in person for the first time, and was it what you expected?
(assuming this applies)
Neither. I see it ending in a slap-fest, followed by tears.
Mmm good times…:]
It just doesn’t feel proper to take laptop with you to the bog.
And what is your take on that fellow Podcastlers?
Also, why do you think EDGE has lasted far longer than most other gaming mags?
Btw, have any of you played Dragon Quest Swords yet? What is your opinion of it?
Metal Gear?
I thought the episode was gonna be about controversy. I was ready to talk about the damn polish stealing all the game developer jobs...
Too many U.K mags rely on large screenshots, with enlarged but very little text accompanying them. This is why I don't by any mags apart from Edge and Games TM, both which do the opposite and do it well.
If you want a fun, informative read about the games, its industry and those who make the magic happen, Edge or Games TM are highly recommended.
Seriously sometimes I have to read their reviews 2 or 3 times before I realize all they're trying to say is the game sucks.
what is happening to gaming journalists integrity?
also, Do you think it's good that the gaming industry is getting "hollywood-tised"?
And what does a gaming magazine need to contain to make it good?
Also stop picking on WARDROX!
I say Farewell to thee!
Have there been any games that stand out in your minds as having a distinctly European feel? How come there aren't more games based around British comedy?
Amerifags won't know what that is, so more fool them.
