Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also Edge and GamesTM are the only magazines I even buy nowadays. Gotta read something on the shitter, right?
We understand if you don't dig them Jim (perhaps bitter chips cause they didn't hire you, go figure), perhaps you prefer to read single format mags instead.
The Hell? I distinctly remember agreeing with Lauren about the benefits of magazines in this ep. Whenever I buy a games magazine, GamesTM is my mag of choice.
No idea where you got the impression that I actively dislike them.
B) I'll try to do better next time Jim.
Britains finest game devs: Majestic Studios
And their stellar game : Asset Theft
- Let's hope Sharpless wasn't on the phone to his misses when Atheistium was....errrrm... well. That would have taken some explaining.
- On the MGS review-gate no score thing. I am with Wardrox On that one. I also think that when you subscribe to a game company doing you a favour and giving you the game early etc etc, you have to accept you are selling your soul to get that 'exclusive' and should therefore accept that somethings should not be divulged. As if Konami needs these guys to sell Solid Snake's final fucking stand. So get to play the game early, get your hits, make the companies advertising on your website happy and fuck off because without the people that make these great games we wouldn't have a job or a fucking industry.
On the other hand, if you don't want to leave out the glitches and flaws in a game, then just wait and play it like everybody else and give it the score that it deserves, hence not selling your soul to the man.
Rant over. Back to the work I should be doing.
Matt Damon!
The way the yanks say it is fuckin' stoopid
i'm so moving the're
I think Atheistium and Phoenix Blood have quite neutral English accents. There are many variations, but I recommend you move to Liverpool or Birmingham to enjoy the delights of the 'British accent'.
I don't have a missus so, uh, I'll be safe. I'm listening now. *tremble*
Publications shouldn't have to pay for games, for this reason: They need to get their games ahead of time, so they can have adequate time to play and review the game before its release. Thus, they can't go to a store and buy it, or else it will result in a late review. And generally speaking, I prefer to hear about a game as close to release as possible.
And I don't honestly see the justification of their, as Jim said, "take your ball and go home" mentality. That is unprofessional and childish. If they don't want negative reviews, make better games. If they keep getting negative reviews, then the answer is not "stop having your products reviewed," it's "make it so reviewers don't have negative things to say about our games."
Also, Lauren, Hollie, Jim, Wardrox: It's my birthday tomorrow. Thus, best birthday gift ever. :D WHY WON'T YOU LOVE ME, LAUREN?
For me on the review point though. To be fair that is the burden of reviewers and the curse. They must play the game they are reviewing in a very short period of time. Yeah, they won't enjoy it as much and can't treasure moments as much... But this is the sacrifice for being in their position, which is a right arm giver upper if ever I've heard of one for gamers. So bollocks to having a game too early.
But making bad games is not cool, although I feel for companies who don't have 4 years and a budget the size of Georgia to make a game like Rockstar that still get slated.
My point wasn't defending the people at Konami and what they did, they were dicks. but as Clance pointed out, it's basically that the reviewers are asking for this kind of stuff by demanding the free games. If they don't want the industry to put demands on them, then they shouldn't expect the industry to help them out.
In my opinion they should have nothing to do with the publisher or developer regarding the review. If you have it any other way, there will be bias in there.
But my point isn't really that they should get free games. If they want to make the reviewers pay for the games, I have no problem with that. But I think that, whether paid for or not, the game companies need to provide full retail copies of games for the reviewers to play, and long enough before the game's release date that the reviewers can spend a substantial amount of time with the game. Apart from corruption, my two biggest complaints about reviews are late reviews and rushed reviews.
Thanks for the "happy birthday." :)
I don't think games companies 'need' to send anything to reviewers. If they have made a bad game they would probably be better off letting the reviewers and the public sweat over the quality of the game until after release. From a business point of view this makes sense. I mean, at the end of the day, good game or not, the developers are trying to make as much cash as possible - just like any other business in the world.
Take Haze, for example. I reckon the game would have sold much more on release if they weren't dealt such bad reviews in the week leading up to launch. Many people were turned off the game (plus the dodgy demo) and sales were probably hit by as much as 30% (or more than that. Or less. But a number here makes me look like I know what I'm talking about. Did I type that out loud? D'oh!).
It's not a civil duty to provide copies to reviewers and one day games companies could stop doing it altogether and there would be nothing we could do about it.
In the case of MGS, I think it is petty as the game is quite obviously orgasmic, so shouldn't need this kind of treatment.
Happy Birthday Sharpless, whoever you may be!
And thanks. :)

Nope, still there.
Wardrox please read this and educate yourself. I'm a huge fan of the podcastle and I think you may have been highly misinformed and ignorant in your opinion of egm. Thanks.
The reason I was "highly misinformed and ignorant" on the EGM stuff was because that info came out 2 days after my rant. I was going off what was known at the time. Had I read it before we recorded, I would still have ranted, only I wouldn't have sounded quite so douchey.
