Update 1: The code has been
cracked. Joystiq writes "Using the alphabet key and codes in the image above, PS3 fans can use the PlayB3yond site to unlock wallpapers, soundtracks, videos and behind-the-scenes interviews for some big name PS3 launch games. Try not to get too excited." I have no idea how that Y makes an I, but I'm glad somebody smarter than me was on the case. Here's the solution and the site is
http://www.playb3yond.com. The goods sound pretty sweet but you have to wonder ... is this where the rabbit hole ends? What now, l33t cows?
The solution is after the jump, don't want to ruin it for anybody that likes this kinda stuff.
Original story:
Yesterday, an anonymous source at Sony handed Kotaku the start of something that's kept me picking my brain. They slipped us a clue, thrown us a proberbial cryptic bone, and otherwise led us down a rather barren and peculiar path to a web site with nothing on it ... or is it? Here's where I'm stuck, so I'm seeking the council of a few hardcore gamers with sharper eyeballs than mine. If there is anything to see beyond melting clock, we want to know about it -- and we want to know about it before anyone else! So if your boredom is keeping you company and want to second guess where all of this is going, please take a gander at my notes...
(Exhibit A) The
weird billboards compiled in our earlier coverage.
There's a bleeding king chess piece
A melting clock pointed at 3
The 1117 release date.
Everything is taking place in the same white room, like they're unveiling a story with each cryptic ad.
Nothing notable in the HTML code other than the graphic names - clock and whiteRoom where the R is in caps.
I thought they looked like wallpapers so I typed http://www.playb3yond.com/wallpapers and sure enough I get a forbidden directory, but it exists. So there must be a way to get at them (or the site is under construction and I'm getting way too into this crap)
(Exhibit B) The NDA scout's letter which reads:
zoom in
So I've attached some png's of the playbeyond site, it's currently just a graphic featuring the clock stopped at 3 but it will become something much more when it goes live. Yes this will be an ARG of sorts. That's all I can say for now... drop me a line in future and I might be able to tell you more.
Obviously, when you go to the site you only get the clock, so we either have to wait on them to do something or they are waiting on us to figure it out at this point. This was posted yesterday, so I'm inclined to believe it is the latter.
(Exhibit C) I'm convinced that the weird DaVinci Code banner has a major piece of the answer, just because it's the one with the most stuff on it (very scientific of me, yes). As DickMcVengeance pointed out, the symbols do resemble some of the E3 symbols we've seen before, but maybe its just saying something about the SixAxis buttons with that. The letters do have the same clock melting treatment so maybe there is a relationship to the clock at 3 thing.
(Exhibit D) Lastly, what is up with that black flowery thing growing in some shots while the PS3 floats? Here's where I'm stuck. DMV and I have been going back and forth on this all night, and his last suggestion was to overlay all the images together, which I thought was brilliant. Unfortunately, the result looks like what happens when you try to photograph Los Angelas at 100 miles an hour with a camera covered in cobwebs and spider poop. Behold our failed attempt:
We'll keep a look out for more things to try. If you have any new ideas, please submit your notes below.
