The PlayStation 3 is still in its 'early adopter phase' photo

John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Gamasutra that the PlayStation 3 is still in its “early adopter phase.” Koller indicated that the “tech-oriented” consumer “interested in the multi-functionality of the system” composed the adopting legion. He must have forgot that the PS3 has been sitting on retail shelves for over two years.

To be fair, Koller’s interview was about the PlayStation 2’s enormous sales figures. In the last nine years 50 million PS2s sold in North America. Compare the PS2’s behemoth nine-year relevance and it becomes evident why Koller would say that the PS3 is in its infancy.

But that still doesn’t change the fact that Sony’s next-gen console has been on the market for years and hasn't sold well. A month ago, the Wall Street Journal said that the PS3 wasn't a valid "comeback player." Perhaps that's why Koller tossed out that "early adopter" phrase. There's no need to make a comeback if you haven't really started.

How many people are in america altogether?
And Danmartigan makes a good point, the PS2 is still strong! It's perhaps not the most powerful, but it's got a bigger lbrary and can be a damn sight more entertaining than any of the current systems in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't be surprised if the PS2 keeps on trucking until about half way into PS3's life cycle

Just how long are these cycles going to be this time around anyways? It feels weird to have gotten in on the Wii day one, and the PS3 just about a year after release. Every other gen I was almost on the edge of the next one. Made for some awesomely cheap amazing games though.

@Cotton: It's not really a contradiction. The dude is pretending that the PS3 is just like the PS2 for the purposes of making that statement, but that's not the case. The PS2 is a very different beast.

Technically, the PS3 hasn't been official released. When you think of it that way, those millions of units out the door already put Sony ahead in the game!

=\

So... the next Xbox will be out by the time the PS3 has hit it's stride? Sony should have never put the Blu-Ray player in the PS3, would have made it less expensive and just gotten it out the door earlier with a better graphics card.

I too loved my PS2 with all my heart. Then the trojan horse PS3 came along and tried to shove a format down my throat. Not cool. Sure the PS2 forced the DVD format, but there was no format war going on and it made sense for game development storage and whatnot. It was necessary.

The 360 reminds me of the PS2, tons of great 3rd party games, hardware failures--which at least get fixed for free with the 360--better 1st party games than the PS2 actually had now that I think about it, and the 360 totally one-ups the PS2 with its awesome online functionality.

Sony made some bad choices about the PS3, I don't think I would call it the early adopter phase, I would call it... time to start focusing on their next console a little more phase. Maybe not try not worrying about format, stealing Nintendo's motion controls, and wasting time with Home next time, and they'll be ok. Seriously, I wish they had made better choices.

Sony messed up man.

@Cotton:
Whenever anything critical of the PS3 is said, you seem to pop up to defend it. You also show up whenever anything is said about the 360, good or bad, and then you talk shit. I am convinced you are on Sony payroll or something of the sort.

@Article:
Saying you are still in an early adopter phase after 2 years is pretty ridiculous. Sony should just admit that it made mistakes. The fact that they didn't offer a price drop recently is a big one. If Sony would spend as much time actually learning from their mistakes and adapting as they do making excuses and sticking their foot into their mouth then they and PS3 owners would benefit.

I think the people that say the PS3 "isn't selling well" are the same people that say the PSP is a sales failure.

COMPARATIVELY (and this is only this generation of consoles mind you), the PS3 is trailing behind in total numbers at about 20 Million sold. (Wii and 360 have 47M and 27M respectively)

When you look at pacing though, the PS3 has sold about 3 Million more consoles in it's first two-ish years than the 360 had sold in the same timeframe.

And when you look at PREVIOUS generations of games, we see that the PS3 has already sold as much as the GameCube's total sales, and is only a couple million away from the XBox's total sales. Also, they're only 5 million off from where the PS2 was at this point. And by all estimates, there's at least 3 years of sales time left (and with a price drop inevitable, it will only continue to sell more).

Admittedly, Sony has indeed mishandled much with the PS3 and greatly underestimated the effect of price on the average gamer. Also, they HAVE lost significant money in the process, but a 20 million console base is easily enough for developers to make money off of games (otherwise, the XBox and GC wouldn't have had ANY games).

Whether or not Sony can drop the manufacturing cost of the PS3 further, the only option ahead is lowering the PS3 asking price by as much as possible. A LOT of people jumped on the system when it dropped to $400, and $300 is an infinitely more attractive number.

And as for the PSP (I know no one really brought it up, but it's touted as a failure even more than the PS3), right now it stands around 43 Million in sales. That's as much as the XBox and GC combined and only 2 Million shy of what the Wii is at right now.

If developers put out some more good games for the damn system, there's a HELL of a lot of people with PSP's out there that are just itching to buy them.

at least four different Hardware configurations, and the only one that's still available doesn't have backwards compatibility like the previous three did. This is progress?

As a 360 owner, I noticed the PS3 is getting lots of exclusives this year. 2009 is the comeback year maybe?

Sony have always said that the PS3 is designed to have at least a 10 year lifespan, so the early adopter comment makes sense. Besides, Sony have shown that when they bring out a new console they (and third parties) still show support for their previous models. They don't drop them like a stone like certain other console makers ;-)
In the UK the PS3 sold 10.4 million games last year (2008) which means game sales of 334 million UKPounds! That's 145% more than the previous year, or 2 and a half times the number of games sold. Yes the figures are a bit less than the XBox (and a lot less than the Wii) but its far from failing and the increase in sales is staggering.
To those comments along the lines of "they shouldn't have used Blu-Ray or the Cell CPU" I say this. When new technology comes out it is expensive and even though it is a vast improvement on older technology, it takes guts to take the risk and use it in new equipment. Eventually you hope it will catch on and the production costs will drop as more is produced and more people start using it. This is what is happening now, especially as HD DVD has been killed so there is no longer a high definition war, and the Cell CPU is being used in supercomputer applications by Universities and the military as well as domestic items. If we didn't have machines like the PS3 pushing new technology we would still be playing with a cup-and-ball.
