The PlayStation 3 is a failure ... not my words! photo

Okay, many editors in the world of videogame journalism, myself included, have made fun of Sony and its handling of the PS3. As harsh as we may be, one thing we tend not to do is go as far as to say that the PlayStation 3 is a failure, especially this early in the current generation. One man, however, has thrown courtesy out of the window and asks, in his new book: Why Did the PS3 Fail? Tane Kiyoshi attempts to analyze why the PS3 has not been quite the wonderhorse Sony had hoped for, which could prove to be quite the fascinating read.

Fascinating it may be, but surely it's a little early to slap "FAIL" on the PlayStation 3's forehead already. Certainly, Sony has screwed up bigtime during the course of the PS3's lifespan, and perhaps the console has been a failure in that it didn't do what Sony wanted it to do at the right time. That said, there's still everything to play for, and should the PlayStation 3 regain its lost ground, Tane Kiyoshi is going to look a little bit stupid.

It's just a shame that it's in Japanese.

Fail is a royal term, this could be relating to anything it has failed at. So if you think it failed in a certain area, then you think it failed. That's what the word means, if you fail once; you're still a failure.PERIOD
Either you think it's a failure or it isn't, and even if it did make this "come-back it needs" anything positive about it as a whole would be hypocritical.
- So get off the fucking fence pussies!

Marketing and public presence are so critical for the success of anything electronic and obviously since we're having this discussion people know that there is a dire problem with their marketing and PR. This guy isn't "just some douche" trying to make a dollar based on his opinion, millions of people have one and make money from it. Perfect example of PR and presence in the market is the iPod. The i doesn't mean anything, and the ipod itself is not that great, there are hundreds of other mp3 player options available to consumers and still if you gave someone on the street a free mp3 player and their choice between an 1gig iPod and a 2gig mp3 player of a superior make, most people would more than likely take the iPod, not based on educated market analysis or product research, but based on what they saw their friends with at the gym, or what they overheard on tv. Sony simply didn't establish themselves from the get-go with the PS3 it's a fact, otherwise like I said, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The system itself is not a failure, but the people who tried to launch and establish it are. So really it is safe to say that the PS3 AT THIS TIME is a failure, that doesn't mean it'll be wiped off store shelves tomorrow and all information ever dealing with it burned in some satanic fire ritual, it just means they did wrong, it failed and they need a new approach. So fanboys please stop bitching, we know you care about something that doesn't care about you, please don't constantly remind us, and give your system some time.

gamesronlygames: Would you have questioned the legitimacy of this post had it been about a book called "Why the Xbox360 failed?" Somehow, I don't think so.

What Sony really needs to do if they want to succeed, is ditch the PS3, and completely redesign it, for cheaperness, and forgetting Blue Ray. They screwed up, and they should acknowledge it, and do their best to fix it.

Exactly how many more stories do there need to be about some author/analyst/talking head on TV/obscure industry insider/blogger/random Joe Blow on the street saying that "X console has failed/will fail" before everyone finally realizes that, at this point in time, it's little more than pointless, retarded speculation? In the end, it serves no real purpose but to call out the fanboys on either side of the issue and add gasoline to the flames of the already pointless and retarded Console Wars.

yeh you have to give a console at least a year... to call it a failure, don't you think?

I'm still considering getting a PS3. I told myself if I see 10 games that I need to play, I'll finally get one. 7 more games to go!

Saying "PS3 is a success" is almost as dumb as calling it a failure.

to call the PS3 a failure may be stupid, but even if their number suddenly doubled it would still not match the Wii. Also I see MGS4 and FF13 thrown around allot and people need to remember that MGS3 sold well, but hardly on the same level as games like Gears of War and that's not even taking in install base count. MGS series don't sell THAT well (3.5 mil or so) with a 100 million install base what makes you think the sequal will sell better on 15 million? FF13 may be the bigger game, but the games accually sold less... MGS2 outsold FF10 and MGS3 outsold FF12... so I don't think either game is the giant shot in the arm that GTA exclusive would be... 36 million copies of GTA on the PS2 is allot more than the paltry 19 million for the FF and MGS games combined. I think fanboys need to look beyond those two games and hope that something else worth buying comes out next year or this system isn't going to make it to MGS and FF... Ratchet and Clank are a good start and Uncharted looks to be a good new IP so I think that if they play their cards right and capitalize on the games that are comming out they just may make it to a good 15-20 million by the time MGs and FF come out because if the Xbox 360 is 2X their number next holiday or even worse 3 or 4x they are going to be in a world of hurt. They are not Microsoft that can bleed billions for years. My hope is that it's a good race and that the Wii Bubble pops soon. Sorry for the rant -_-
