The pirates are winning: HD-DVD movies and Wii games dumped photo

News that should surprise nobody: HD-DVD movies are starting to appear on Torrent networks. According to ArsTechnica, the film "Serenity, was made available as a .EVO file and is playable on most DVD playback software packages such as PowerDVD. The file was encoded in MPEG-4 VC-1 and the resulting file size was a hefty 19.6 GB." The alleged security keys and ripping method has found its way to a few forums where they are received with cries of "WOW I'LL BUY A 360 HD-DVD DRIVE NOW!". People still watch movies?

In similar news, owners of specific LG standard DVD drives have the ability to rip Wii games through looping a diagnostic program that reads the raw data. From Digg: "Using an LG-8164b or LG-8163b DVD-ROM drive, a way to dump Wii games has been found. Running the DVDInfo application to allow read access to the disc and using a collection of "rawdump" apps, a Wii game disc can be backed up in around 50 hours." Is nothing sacred?

So how long until we see Blu-Ray knocked up and on its knees?  I give it 2 months, tops.

The blue-ray disk is capable of holding 50Gbps, and video games are consuming more space than ever, so I dont think it will die out yet.

Um, hate to break it to you Niero, but blu-ray was the first to get dumped.

I totally agree, that guy is way ahead of our time.

There was some journalist who was trying to convince everybody that the next gen consoles are now, and should be called, new gen instead; because of the times we're in. I'm not for it, because the journalist never called me back.

Personally I don't give a shit, I was just joking with Niero.

Heh, great picture. I don't really care about ripping Wii games, but I would like to find a work around to get homebrew and regular ROMs working on it.

Yeah roms...I always thought the Wii would get arcade and c64 games for the VC. Since this obvious not the case I wanna see some emulators. Playing behind your pc desk is just not the same as on a comfy couch.

People need to fucking cut this shit out. You want it? Buy it. You don't want to pay for it? Then you don't want it enough.

Bloody Pirates. I hate them.

It's not really that I don't want to pay for it. It's more I can't pay for it unless stores start accepting bits of string.

Exactly Serpentish. Those who hate pirates assume they are millionaires or something. Probably one of the biggest reasons burning and downloading was made was because people can't shove out 20-50$ like some people can. Can't blame people for abusive capitalism.

As for the article I find it quite funny. I don't know why Sony and all the industries try to cut off the ability to burn/download since hackers and the like are born to find loopholes. What's even funnier is how those industries also know they can't just cut off DVD-R's and the like without losing some cash. I betcha they make a shitload of dough from people buying CD-R's/DVD-R's and shit.

I'm not judging here, but I'm actually curious, if you can't afford it, as some of you are saying, then what is your justification that you should have it? There is always a way to make enough to afford it, get a second job, or a job if you don't have one. Save some cash. Why do you feel you shouldn't have to work to enjoy those things.

And I'm not judging here, I've pirated before. I don't anymore. I just want to know how the logic in your mind works is all.
Serpentish's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/16/2007 15:39

Justification for why I should have it? None. I don't believe I should have it. It's not as if I deserve it or anything but it's available and if the pirated versions didn't exist I just wouldn't buy the legit versions because I can't afford it. It's not a loss on their part, just a gain on mine.

I wouldn't get a second job because I think free time trumps getting new media. If you figure out how immortality works I'll take a second job.

Will downloading HDdvd movies really catch on that much? i mean a 20 gb file is just plain huge and at a pace like that it won't take some very long to fill up their computer's hardrives. Normally, movies range from like 700mb to about 4gb(depending on quality) which reflects the size of blank CD's and DVD's, so that when the hardrve does get full, you can just burn to cd for a small price... However, that doesn't work so well with hddvd since, if i recall correctly, blank hddvd discs are very expensive, so much so that it would be much less troublesome to just go and buy the damn movie, thus pirating the hddvd movie would be rather moot.

although... while keeping the pirated hddvd movies would be rather pointless, i guess you could still pirate the movies for a one time viewing... but when you consider the time it takes to download 20gb, espeically off of torrents, i think i'd rather just shell out the cash to rent/buy the damn thing

I'd love it if ripped movies on bittorrent had higher resolutions, I'm always stuck with crap that is lower than 640x480. I wish there were 1080p movies.

Well to play a pirated game you must:

open your hundreds of dollars console (voiding its warranty), buy some sort of modchip that will come in a little envelope from some obscure asian country,
get some diagrams off the internet,
solder like 15 to 25 wires to different parts of the console, put it back toguether,
find some game in the internet,
download like 4 or 5 gigs of data,
burn it to a DVDR,
play the game....

Not only its expensive and time consuming but it takes some balls to solder some foreing sh!t in your beloved console innards....

I believe is actually easier to work 7.5 hours and buy a game...

If you can't afford to buy a game, just rent it.

JamesSorensen: The same situation applies with the Wii dump. You cannot do anything with the image yet. The title says "HD-DVD movies and Wii games dumped", not dumped and playable. Blu-ray has been dumped.

Maybe if those pricks who run the game stores didn't stop selling older games, there'd be less of a reason to pirate games.

At the moment the 360 seems to be the easiest to pirates. A huge part of my firends list on Live are modders, and itīs so easy it seems. I know people that just bought a 360 and on the way out of the shop they have been offered a mod on their 360 on the spot. At the moment piracy is bigger than on the old xbox. It is a worrying thought. Good example of piracy, Lost Planet PAL edition var available of torrent site on the 24th of dec. 3 weeks before itīs European release. All of a sudden my friends list exploded with people playing a game that hadnt even come out. This is something that Microsoft needs to adress and quick. Why buy games if you can download them for free. The only limit is on a pal system you can only play pal games or region-less games. The same applies for Ntsc of course. And all theese people arent afraid because they feel that Microsoft cant toch them! And at the moment they are right. Itīs not hard for Microsoft to see the modders. Just look at their Live profile and see games played.
