Ubisoft has become the king of creating games specifically targeted for tween girls, in case you hadn't noticed. You know, those games we tend to poke fun at on occasion? The ones that sell millions of copies? Yeah, those! Lord knows my younger sister has at least fifteen of 'em. Curse you, Ubisoft!
On CNBC's Powering Ahead, we finally have the chance to hear about why the company has made a total shift in recent years to target this newly-found audience. Here's what Ubisoft VP of marketing Tony Key had to say on the matter:
"The thing that really started getting us thinking about the girls was that Nintendo told us they were selling an enormous amount of pink DSs a couple years ago."
Really? That was the reason? So ... you're not being facetious? I see. Sorry, all men reading this who happen to own a pink DS. Don't be ashamed.
Quick aside: one of the show's hosts used the phrase "double down." Heh.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
they mine as well say the same Babies used in Imagine babies came up with the idea of MW2.
My wife has a pink DS too :-)
Here! I've got a bucket of paint right here!
That's purple!
Company identifies market: Company supplies market.
So what if a lot of the titles are shit? I don't think you or I are supposed to be playing them (unless of course said 7 year old enlists your help to get past a hard bit).
Dammit I would buy a purple DS in a second.
Purple is the color of the gods.
I bought a Pink DS Lite for my wife and her favorite game is Petz Bunnyz made by Ubisoft. Just because you think the games are trash doesn't mean everyone else does. I thought these were shameless shovelware titles too (and maybe most of them still are) but my wife plays that stupid Bunny game for hours so there must be something to their business model.
Furthermore, despite this new line of garbage, the company hasn't stopped making good games either, the last Prince of Persia comes to mind... so as long as they can continue to satisfy both markets, I say kudos to them!
Also, Prince of Persia is a long way from a good game! It's a fair to middling game, which makes you buy the end extra!
We just find this funny, that's all. That a big "proper" games company like ubi has stooped to licensed cash cows. Surely you can leave the shovelware to the shovelwarers?
But yeah, fair do's Ubi - although perhaps you could put some of that Barbie/Cute dogs/Hannah Montanna effort into making your PS3 ports a bit better!
My general view of ubi is "Makes great games, but ports them to PS3 shoddily, often with poor online...."
Moms....
Sexual innuendo FTW!
