The Orange Box topples BioShock and Halo 3 on Metacritic photo

It was looking like it was going to happen, and now it finally has: Valve's The Orange Box has taken the top PC and Xbox 360 spots on game review site Metacritic.

It was a pretty easy call: jamming a lot of good games (Half-Life 2 and Episodes One and Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal) in one nifty package is sure to make a lot of gamers (and game reviewers) happy. Destructoid's own reviews of the collection have been favorable as well, and compare to Metacritic's overall 97 out of 100 rating (both in PC and Xbox 360 categories).

"By all accounts The Orange Box is exceeding everyone's expectations," said Doug Lombardi, director of marketing at Valve. "The North American launch continues this week as retailers who experienced temporary outages over the weekend are being replenished each day. Meanwhile, the first retail units are appearing in stores this week across Europe."

BioShock was edged out by just one point (96) in the Xbox 360 category, and the 2nd place runner up in the PC category was actually Half-Life 2, also with a score of 96.

I bet the trend will continue when The Orange Box is released on the PS3 later on.

THE ORANGE BOX TOPS PC AND 360 METACRITIC RANKINGS

Valve's Unique Multiplatform Game Box Captures Metacritic Best

October 17, 2007 - The launch of The Orange Box - the unique new multiplatform, multi-game offering from Valve, creators of Half-Life® 2 and Counter-Strike® - has been met with incredible critical and commercial success, capturing the top rated position for all PC and 360 games during an explosive North American retail debut.

With reviews coming in from around the world, Orange has earned the top spot as the highest scoring PC (topping Half-Life and Half-Life 2) and 360 title of all time according to Metacritic.com .

Available now for the PC and Xbox 360 and coming soon for the Playstation® 3, The Orange Box includes Half-Life® 2: Episode Two, the second installment in the Half-Life 2 episodic trilogy; Team Fortress® 2, the sequel to the game that put class-based, multiplayer team warfare on the map; and PortalTM, the game that blends puzzles, first person action, and adventure gaming to produce an experience like no other.

To bring gamers up to date with the Half-Life 2 universe, The Orange Box also includes Half-Life 2 and Half-Life® 2: Episode One.

The Orange Box has a suggested retail price of $49.95 on the PC and $59.95 on the Xbox® 360. In the coming weeks, The Orange Box will also be available for the Playstation® 3 console systems.

Deservedly so. Best set of games I've seen in a long time. I'm still loving them all!

As always Valve continues to impress, they really know how to treat their consumers right.

Congrats to Valve, and yeah, if you haven't ever played the older games included, it just about has to be the best deal ever (for new games anyway).

The Orange Box only happens once in a gamers lifetime, that's why.

I didn't think I'd be playing much Half Life, but I've become addicted to it. I'm about halfway through Highway 17 right now. It's super crazy awesome.

Wow, it took 5 games to topple Bioshock. Valve zerged! Now let's see them do it with one game like everyone else.

The rating should be thrown out the window. Two old games. If they want to do this then they should have gave Midway Classics a perfect ten. It has over twenty good games in it.

@Holyetheline: "The Orange Box only happens once in a gamers lifetime, that's why."

More like every three console generations. Super Mario All Stars had a similar concept, and it was also one of the highest scoring games for its system, and considered an essential masterpiece for any owner of that system.

Anyone saying Orange Box is undeserving hasn't tried Portal yet. Portal is easily one of the most fun, and most novel games I've ever played.

Orange Box would've been worth it for Portal and TF2 alone.

Well I havent played any games on the orange box......evar! Why casue my pc used to suck sooo bad. But i think I'll give it a spin on 360. Also the reviews might have beaten halo but I bet Halo has the most players online anytime of day.

SInce i already played HL2 and episode 1, i look at the orange box like its actually the black box. episode 2, portal - which is set in the half life universe and TF2. this "black box" would still get the same score.

Well, the reason why this works is because it has both. A lot of shit, and all of it is fantastic.

I felt slighted when I found out I was going to have to buy HL2 and HL2:Ep1. If I wanted to buy these games separately I would have cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of $80, so I decided to think of this as the black box as well and I'm very glad I purchased this.

HL2:Ep2 is fantastic and I cant wait for episode 3; Team Fortress 2 is an awesome multiplayer experience and Portal is a just a fantastic game on it's own.

So I believe that in owning the top two games that the Orange Box had topped and beating both of them that the Orange box really is the best game out right now.

So assuming Mario Galaxies is a superb game and Nintendo re-packaged it 2 years later bundled with every other Mario game it would beat out Orange Box if trends hold true?

Complaining about Orange Box having too many games is like saying that girl in Total Recall has too many titties.

3 titties >>>>>>>>>>> 2 titties.

FO REAL¬!!

But still... Bioshock's 96 is based on 75 reviews and Orange Box's 97 is based on 18! It'll drop... The all do ;)

That's for the 360.... For PC the ratio is 15/40. Reviews that is...

I think what should be examined not so much why all these "next generation" games are unable to topple Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a 10 year old game! Not that I'm rooting for it's topple becuase ZOoT is truly near perfect.

Ports of a crappy PC games get high scores now?

What miniscule faith I had in reviews is now gone.

The only thing worth it on that damn box is Portal, HL2 is crap and Team Fortress is to laggy and to simplistic.

alright, i need to ask.. is the new 360 version of half-life 2 going to PWN the xbox version? because the xbox version was one of the biggest dissapointments ever. i played it for about half an hour, and at least 30% of the time was spent looking at the word "loading..."

Team Fortress isn't laggy. Oh wait did you by the 360 version? LAWL.

Seriously though, it is cumulatively better than either of those games. On PC. Between HL2+mods, TF2 multiplayer, and Portal being the best single player game of the year.

I can't wait to see the GOTY nominations on all the sites. I wonder if Orange Box can even be a contender, since HL2 and Ep1 aren't technically games made this year?

That's assuming Mass Effect doesn't bump Orange box off the top spot, of course.
