No one on staff is particularly interested in massively multiplayer online games; shocking, I know! Perhaps that will change with Guild Wars 2, perhaps not. A while back, executive producer Mike O'Brien posted a hype-filled design manifesto -- maybe you skimmed it?
With this new video, you don't have to feel guilty. Essentially, it takes the concepts mentioned in the manifesto and starts running. Actually, sprinting is more like it. The bold statements being made by AreaNet combined with the fantastic art style left me feeling impressed. Again, not an MMO guy. At all.
Guild Wars 2 will be at gamescom and PAX, so if you're hitting up either show, be sure to stop by.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
With a world reliant on things happening in real time and affecting attacks and the like, lag will put a serious dent in the game experience.
And if GW is any indication, AreaNet absolutely can pull off everything they're promising. They did it with GW and a lot of the things they're talking about for GW2 already have their foundations in GW(1) mechanics. The only real problem I can see is that they are coming close to pulling a Molyneux; so far I can see them delivering everything they've mentioned, but if they push it much further then I'm going to start having my doubts.
We need a DToid Guild, if there isn't one already (I certainly haven't seen it).
GW1 could have already been a massive MMO revolution, but that game - just like this one - didn't get half the attention it deserved pre-launch. It got 'okay' coverage and still managed to be the #2 MMO right off the bat.
I've played WOW quite a lot - both before and after I played GW - and I'm fully confident that if GW2 got the exposure it deserves, it could knock WOW off the top spot. GW's main failing early on was just that a lot of people didn't hear about it until it launched, so it was hard to get excited for it. If GW2 manages to get more covergae without hitting Molyneux levels, I really don't see how it could fail.
I don't mean that as a slight. I love Monster Hunter, Phantasy Star and Guild Wars, but MMOs they are not.
Ohhh I'd say right about the time GW 2 became a persistent world instead of instanced?
Guild Wars was a CORPG but GW 2 will be MMO.
I'll give it longer than DDO, but not much longer than it lasted before going to microtransactions.
You're really not making a lot of sense. Define what an MMO is.
Uhh.. there's still plenty playing Guild Wars, and you obviously don't know what MMO means..
Arenanet won't let me down...I hope.
Anyway, I already fapped like 12 times to this video today.
If you've never played the original Guild Wars, you really shouldn't be acting so negative and skeptical. GW1 is actually really successful and is famous for no subscription fees. It wasn't a conventional MMO, but GW2 isn't going to be like GW1. ArenaNet has a fantastic reputation with its fans for delivering an awesome product. Pretty much everybody who's familiar with GW1 (and I mean, played it regularly, not quit 10 minutes because it's not like WoW) and ANet is very confident this game will live up to the hype.
Is that why it looks like more Unreal engine bullshit with some light bloom? When will a developer have the balls to ACTUALLY MAKE THEIR GAME LOOK PAINTERLY AND ILLUSTRATED? LIMBO, the new Zelda (Skyward Sword? The title is eluding me), and a few others do a good job of not looking like dull-as-dishwater realism garbage.
No criticism of the game. It could turn out to be awesome. But this video is full of bullshit. When I see your game, I don't think, "WOW, THIS LOOKS LIKE NOTHING I'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE". I think, "Wow, another generic fantasy MMO. I wonder which Tolkien races I'll get to be in this one."
FFS, Guild Wars is still going.
Might want to read up on this type of thing before you make yourself look like an idiot.
"I'll give it longer than DDO,"
Can you see the future? That game is still going and making plenty of money. I have no idea how you can know when that will stop.
(sorry about the triple post.. i'm done now.)

Saying that I gave GW1 a skip as I didn't have the time back then and now I've got some free time I can see myself at least giving this a try
I like these games because you don't feel obligated to get your "money's worth" out of them. You don't have to play Guild Wars like a second job because you're paying for it. It's the best "in and out" "whenever I feel like it" MMO out there, and I can't complain.
Bring it on Guild Wars 2...You look AWESOME.
@ The Silent Protagonist:
I agree with you completely. If Guild Wars is an MMORPG, so is Monster Hunter Tri. If Diablo is an MMO, so is Call of Duty 4. They are not MMOs. An MMO requires the game world you play in to be actively filled with hundreds or thousands of other players. Those games only allow a small number of people to be in the same game world at the same time. Just being in the same "server" or the same online game at the same time doesn't count as an MMO. This probably won't either.
And I'm saying this as a person who actively plays and loves Monster Hunter Tri and Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst.
The best MMO in my opinion will always be Ultima Online, but damn does the original Guild Wars hold a close second.
Color me interested.
However, since NCSoft killed off Auto Assault, I promised myself not to buy another product of them, but we'll see what happens in the future...
Don't see it as helping NCSoft, which I suppose happens, but as helping ArenaNet. I'm not a big fan of NCSoft either, but I try to make sure people know in this case all they're doing is publishing.
There will be no phasing. When you do something in the world, it affects everyone. If you help save a town, everyone that comes along finds the town saved. If you let a bridge get destroyed, it's destroyed for the next person that comes along. They may find options to help defend or repair the bridge.
It's fully an MMO. Just like WoW and other games, you'll be able to come across a crapload of people out there in the world. There will be some instancing with regards to your personal story, but the world is the world and you all share it.
This is ArenaNet, not NCsoft.
That dragon people are calling Deathwing is the reason Deathwing left Ascalon and went to Azeroth. It's only a little one too... the Elder Dragons are bigger. Much bigger.
Level cap is 80, but the curve is flat, no increasing amount of time and grond required for each successive level.
And for those skeptical that ArenaNet can deliver on their promises, I can tell you this; even if it's flawed right out of the gate, ArenaNet WILL fix it by listening to the community and making any and all necessary changes. They are known for their incredible support and their desire to keep their games fair, balanced, and above all, fun.
Also, it sad to see so many people surprised that this game will have no monthly fees. Which basically just tells me that so many people are new to Guild Wars in general. They make money off of yearly/bi-yearly expansions which are practically entire new games worth of content.
GW1 was already the MMO for people who didn't like the bullshit of regular MMOs (you can hit the level cap in a day or two), and GW2 looks to continue that tradition and expand on it ten-fold.
I'll be there day one for this one.
